I have aching glands on the side of my face under ear and I feel lousy. Any ideas what can cause this and how to get rid of them? I've been near a lot of sick people lately and I have been feeling out of sorts and now these glands started aching. I have a low grade fever too. Thanks

Answer
Somebody gave you mumps. you need to see your Doctor asap. Or better yet go to the ER. From Web MD.

What is mumps?

Mumps is a contagious viral infection that can cause painful swelling of the salivary glands, especially the parotid glands, between the ear and the jaw. About 1 out of 3 people with mumps will not have gland swelling. They may have an upper respiratory tract infection (URI) instead.1
What causes mumps?

Mumps is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes near you, or shares food or drinks.
What are the symptoms?

Mumps can affect many body systems and cause flu-like symptoms, abdominal pain, swollen cheeks, and swollen and painful testicles. But up to 20 out of 100 people who are infected with the mumps virus do not have any symptoms.2

The incubation period-the time from when a person is first infected with the virus until the first symptoms develop-is usually 16 to 18 days, although it can be as long as 25 days. Infected people can spread the virus 1 to 2 days before symptoms start and for 5 to 9 days after symptoms start.
How is mumps diagnosed?

Mumps is most often diagnosed by a history of exposure to the disease, the presence of swelling and tenderness of the parotid glands, and other symptoms, including neck stiffness, headache, and painful testicles.

If needed, blood tests, such as an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA, EIA), can be done to confirm the diagnosis and eliminate the possibility that another illness is causing the symptoms.

The mumps virus itself can be identified with a viral culture of samples of urine, saliva, or cerebrospinal fluid obtained by a lumbar puncture. These tests are rarely done.
How is it treated?

In most cases, people recover from mumps with rest and care at home. In complicated cases, hospitalization may be required.
Can mumps be prevented?

Mumps can almost always be prevented by getting a series of shots with the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Two shots provide lifelong protection (immunity) against getting mumps: one at 12 to 15 months of age, the other at 4 to 6 years of age. There is also a measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine that includes a vaccine for chickenpox (varicella). This vaccine is called ProQuad and can be substituted for either or both doses of MMR.34

Most babies do not become infected with mumps during their first year of life because of the short-term immunity they received while in their mothersâ womb. Before the mumps vaccine existed, mumps was a common childhood disease in the United States.

So I was diagnosed with acid reflux 2 weeks ago by an ENT. He said he saw inflammation around my larynx. I have never had a problem that I know of with heartburn. I notice that I bench a lot though when I eat or drink. I had a problem with my throat in January and February. I took some antibiotics but it never totally got rid of the problem. The primary doctor thought it was strep throat and I went through about 2 different ones, but it could have been a different problem all along.

I also am Bipolar II and have anxiety. I worry about my health probably too much.

Anyway I have changed my diet going on about 2.5 almost 3 weeks. No soda, fatty foods, chocolate, spicy etc. I don't eat after 6 or 630 and I try to sleep with my head raised. I notice some slight improvement in my symptoms, but I still feel a little pain when I am talking.

How long does this medicine and diet really take to work? I am sick of this sensation. My voice doesn't sound 100 percent totally normal and it is freaking me out. Could it be something more serious?

Answer
Hey Ripple2803 Just when was the past time you've experienced acid reflux disease? Probably it was nowadays, or yesterday, or a couple weeks ago. Ingesting low-acidity, low-excess fat foods is the easiest method to maintain symptoms under control. If it doesn't aid, there are actually teas which may relieve the esophagus and counteract tummy acids with out hurting the baby.

Don't consume alcohol in case you are attempting to deal with indications of acid reflux disease. The consequences of alcohol basically try to unwind the muscle tissue within your esophagus, which worsens reflux. Think about what you are actually eating, the way you are eating of course, if you've acquired excessive pressure in your own life as is possible factors behind repeated acid reflux disease and change them well before getting to for your forthcoming drink.

Keep an eye on the meals that may be causing your acid reflux disease. There are certain bring about foods for everyone who has acid reflux disease. When you know which foods are hurting you, you are able to avoid them.

What does the bible say about smoking marijuana?

Did jesus used to smoke a blunt every now and then?

Answer
Is Marijuana Really That Bad? âSome say that using marijuana is a way to escape problems,â says Ellen, who lives in Ireland, âand that it doesnât have any bad side effects.â Have you heard similar statements about marijuana? Compare some common myths with the facts.

Myth. Marijuana is not harmful.

Fact. Known or suspected lasting effects of marijuana are as follows: damaged memory, impaired ability to learn, and suppressed immune system, as well as damage to the sexual health of both males and females. It can induce anxiety attacks, psychoses, and paranoia. Children born to women who smoke marijuana are more likely to have behavioral problems, be less attentive, and have greater difficulty making decisions.

Myth. Marijuana smoke is less harmful than cigarette smoke.

Fact. Compared with tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke can deposit four times as much tar on your airways and carry five times as much poisonous carbon monoxide into your blood. Smoking five marijuana joints can deliver the same amount of cancer-causing toxins as an entire pack of cigarettes.

Myth. Marijuana is not addictive.

Fact. Teens who have mental or emotional problems can quickly become addicted to marijuana. Others can become addicted after long-term use. In addition, studies show that teens who smoke marijuana have a much greater risk of using other addictive drugs, such as cocaine.

What does the bible say? To be completely honest with you, there is not a scripture in the bible that has a law set against smoking. The reason for this is because the majority of the bible, has you exercise and follow not laws, but primarily "principles."

Bible principles are fundamental truths. Laws, on the other hand, may be for specific circumstances. (Deuteronomy 22:8) We must use thinking ability to understand how a principle applies in a particular situation. (Proverbs 2:10-12) For example, the Bible teaches that life is a gift from God. That basic principle can guide us at work, at home, and while traveling. It leads us to take safety precautions.âRead Acts 17:28.

By using the scriptures that we know and understand, we can deduce an educated conclusion for ourselves. Here are some examples of medical facts of smoking and some scriptures that you can use to compare.

The probability that a long-term smoker will eventually be killed by tobacco is 1 in 2. The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated: âA cigarette is . . . a cleverly crafted product that delivers just the right amount of nicotine to keep its user addicted for life before killing the person.â

Smoking tobacco endangers health and life. Smoking has been linked to more than 25 life-threatening diseases. It is, for example, a major contributor to heart attack, stroke, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and various cancers, especially lung cancer and is related to a greater risk of atherosclerosis and diabetes. That being so, smoking and high blood pressure are a dangerous combination that can lead to cardiovascular diseases.

How Smoking Affects Others: The Bible says: âYou must love your neighbor as yourself.â (Matthew 22:39) Love for your neighborsâand your family members are your closest neighborsâis a powerful reason to quit.
Smoking hurts others. Until recent times a smoker could light up just about anywhere and expect no objection. But attitudes are changing because more people understand the dangers of breathing in smoke that drifts from the cigarettes of others. For example, a nonsmoker who is married to a smoker has a 30-percent greater risk of developing lung cancer than if he or she were married to a nonsmoker. Children who live with parents who smoke are more likely to develop pneumonia or bronchitis in the first two years of life than are children who live in homes where no one smokes.
Pregnant women who smoke endanger their unborn babies. Nicotine, carbon monoxide, and other dangerous chemicals contained in cigarette smoke enter the motherâs bloodstream and pass directly to the child in the womb. The consequences include a greater likelihood of spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and death among newborns. Moreover, the risk of sudden infant death syndrome is three times higher for babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy.

2.Corinthians.7; 1 âTherefore, since we have these promises, beloved ones, let us cleanse+ ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in Godâs fear.â

Romans 12:1â Consequently I entreat YOU by the compassions of God, brothers, to present YOUR bodies+ a sacrifice living, holy, acceptable to God, a sacred service with YOUR power of reason.â
Matthew 5:8 âHappy are the pure in heart, since they will see God.â

Cleanliness is a quality that belongs to and originated with the holy and clean God, Jehovah. He teaches us to benefit ourselves by becoming holy and clean in all our ways.âIsaiah 48:17; 1 Peter 1:15.

Will the cigarette smoking culture in Germany ever diminish?

Easy A

I recently traveled to Germany and much to my surprise, found smokers everywhere at all hours of the day. From old people to young, men to women, girls and boys, there was even a baby with a cigarette candy in his mouth for pete's sake- at least I think it's candy- it's more intense than France, the UK and even Ireland.

Answer
I think it depends on the city as well. I noticed more smokers in bigger cities like Munich and fewer in the university town of Freiburg.

As for a change, I think it is coming. Italy and Ireland have already banned smoking in public and France put a similar ban in place. The Germans were working on some such ban, but it got squashed in government. I still think it will come back in some form. I certainly hope so.

Once a ban goes into effect it will be interesting to see how the actual culture of smoking develops around it. I would not expect everyone to stop smoking at once; but a few winters of having to stand outside of the warm bar without a beer in the snow to smoke might turn off a bunch of people. I also expect the health system will be happy to help anyone to stop that wants it.

what is the best stroller and what are some things i should look for when looking for a stroller?

My brother said that big wheels are better and someone told me the 3 wheelers are tippy..any truth to that!?..let me know your opinion..i was looking at the peregos, valcos, l'coo, bugaboo anyone got there take on these..let me know what you think is the best stroller and why and which ones aren't so good...would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
It would help to answer this question if i knew what your primary stroller use will be.... city, terrain, shops, mall, car, etc?

In terms of getting a travel system, that is really not necessary, most strollers can be easily turned into travel systems with the help of adapters for the primary car seats on the market.

For example, Bugaboo- has adapters for Peg Perego Viaggio, Maxi Cosi Mico, and Graco car seats... so you can have a bugaboo and a travel system easily.

The Quinny Buzz as mentioned is a good option, my only problem with it is that it ONLY takes the Maxi Cosi Mico car seat, which, relative to the other top car seats on the market, may look nice, but sucks. It has a flimsy shade, and it is not as highly safety rated and tested internationally as the Peg Perego Viaggio. The Viaggio has its issues too, being large and a bit heavy and more upright than other car seats, but it is also the safest car seat on the market. It might be heavy for you to carry to and fro but what is more imporant, adult comfort or baby safety?
Also the Viaggio goes up to 30 pounds and 30 inches, which, in turn makes it last atleast a year for certain, where as most car seats go up to 20 pounds, and a lot of infants reach 20 pounds before their 1st birthday.

If you need a small stroller, with a compact fold and the option to face mom, I suggest the Bugaboo Bee- in terms of car seats, I would choose the Graco one that goes up to 30 pounds, as the BEE does not have Viaggio adapters.

If stroller size is not an issue, i also recommend the Peg Perego Skate. As a whole I love my Skate, but i will tell you that it is not for easy car travel, it is a large stroller with excellent manuverability. Another excellent peg perego product is the Pliko Switch- i have a lot of love for that one as well and I love that it is a full size stroller with a recline and an UMBRELLA fold, and the option to face mom. The Pliko Switch is new on the market and it is basically a P3 in which the seat can face mom.

Out of all those strollers in terms of ease of use and compact fold the Pliko Switch wins.

THe bugaboo Cameleon i have mixed views on myself. I have owned a good amount of strollers and there is something about the Bugaboo Cameleon that just does not appeal to me so i never bought it, that primarily is the fact that it has a two piece fold- this is why i have the Bee instead. The two piece fold thing, may or may not be an issue for you. But if you go to and fro in your car a lot, it can be quite annoying to not just be able to fold in one movement your stroller and shove it in the trunk.
Another minus on the Bugaboo is the price tag, but that is not an issue for everyone. ON the plus side though, you can get some amazing customizable things for your stroller and it will just look awesome. THis is why i got the Bee, my bee is lilac in color with purple and pink flowers for my little girl- i had that custom made.

Then on the high high end there is the Stokke Xplory, probably one of the most genious stroller ideas out there, and I do highly recommend it. However, it does have a large two piece fold and at 1200 is not in everyones budget.

If you want more help, i am an active member on strollers and prams. com. You can go there and post all the specifications , requirments, and budget that you are in and many smart stroller ladies will suggest the ideal stroller for you.

Most moms go through 5 strollers within the first year, which at the end of the day makes them all cost the same as a higher end stroller in the 500+ range. So my suggestion to you is get it right the first time and avoid all the graco, kolcraft, junky strollers with tons of plastic. You want something that will last and be pleasure to you use for both you and your child.

How old should my baby be to put in the shopping cart seat?

Aynne

My baby is not born yet she is due February 26. The thing is I bought a Chicco Cortina traveling system for her. It's the infant car seat and the stroller. I heard it was the best and safest so i bought it. I read a lot of reviews saying the carrier does not fit in the shopping cart where you would sit your baby. So I will have to put her in the big part which I won't be able to put a lot of groceries in there. So I can manage for a while but, when do you think she will be able to sit in the seat? I would like to by a comfy seat thing for her and put her in there as soon as she is able to sit up by her self. I was think 5 months? What's the average age thanks.
Sorry for some weird sentences I got mixed up!

Answer
It's not that the car seat doesn't fit, it's that the shopping cart is not made for car seats, and by putting a car seat on the top of the shopping cart the whole thing becomes unstable and can tip over. This has been a problem for decades, but idiot mothers continued to put the car seat on top, and babies continued to be injured. This is why the shopping carts have infant seats attached for moms who want that, but why the car seats should not be used. You can use the reclined infant seats that are bolted to the shopping carts from day one as far as I'm aware, just put a blanket down first.

The toddler seats you should use when your baby can sit up and at your own discretion. They continue to say that shopping carts are not the safest place for your baby to ride and that if you have a stroller or can wear your baby then that's better/safer.

Leaving your baby in the car seat while you shop leaves your baby in a curved position that interferes with oxygen levels in the blood. There's really no reason to do it. They're heavy and if you drop the car seat you may damage it, not to mention hurting your baby.

I would suggest looking into a baby-carrier. With my first I hauled the infant seat in and out of stores and it was miserable, for her, for us, and for anyone who walked by us who might get bumped by that seat. It was awful. We had backaches and were in pain. When she was old enough to sit in the cart, then I was having to spray the cart with cleaners and use sheets and stuff to try and block the cart from her because H1N1 was going around and she was only a year old about. With my second I bought an Ergo baby carrier. We left the infant seat in the car and carried him in the Ergo when we'd go into places. He LOVED it. He'd snuggle in and go to sleep, I had my arms and hands free for shopping, he was safe and sound and I could kiss him anytime I wanted as well as talk to him face-to-face (which is great for development.) I didn't have to worry about the germs of the cart getting him. Much better. I used that well into his second year, he just loved it better than the cart and I didn't have to worry about it.

Do your parents have a pushchair at their house for when the kids visit?

Joey

This is just something I'm wondering about...

I don't drive, so I plan to get a good quality pram/pushchair for my baby, and just a car seat for when we go in a taxi or whatever. I don't need it to fold down tiny to fit in the boot or store in the house, because it will be in use every single day.

However, my mother DOES drive and will be wanting to spend weekends and days off with the baby, so should she get herself a lightweight, easy fold small travel system to save dragging my pushchair across town?

I think it would also make it easier for when we all go out together, as her car boot is TEENY.

What do you think? What set up do your family have?

Answer
my parents have 26 grand children, and while none of us live very near them, with so many of us, they have grandchildren visiting several times a year. Over the years various of my siblings have bought them a stroller, a highchair, a playpen, and a car seat, just so they could have one while they were visiting, and now we all get to take advantage of that when we go visit. My parents didn't buy any of those though. It is handy having a stroller there. My in-laws don't have any baby items so it does make it a little difficult when we go visit them.

Formulatted without mineral oil because it is the 2nd worse thing we could do to our skins health for it is like rubbing car oil on our skin and exposing ourselfes to the sun, animal products come from dead animals and these come from rendering plants these plants pick all dead animal and dead animal parts (from meat houses, etc.) and they put it in a huge pot, squash everything and boils it, what ever comes to the top is the oil other companies use to elaborate thier products, gross I know...the lipstick... ewww anyway, that is why i use botanically based products which is way much better because they get absorbed and the nutrients inside the products is what helps our skin look and feel healthy...they are not sold in stores but I buy them online at http://arbonnepuertorico.myarbonne.com and it is a great way to buy becasue they have this money back guarantee if for some reason there is something you do not like from the products you get your money back guarantee (within 45 days from purchase) so you have nothing to loose, only the dull skin ;~).... I know the info is too much but hope this is helpfull!!!

chicco car seat?

Elizabeth<

I have the chico cortina travel system. i hate it, well not the stroller the car seat. when my daughter is in it she looks so squished. i dont know if she is comfortable. i want to switch to a convertible car seat, but dont want to spend 300$ on a britax marathon. what are some other good ones. also would you say convertible seats are more or less convienent?

Answer
Unless you're in Canada a Britax Marathon should NEVER cost $300!! Especially right now, and I literally mean right now, if you want one, don't wait. Britax is having one of their semiannual sales from February 24 - March 2. You could snag a Britax seat for $200 or less including shipping! check out babyage.com, they're rumored to have the lowest prices. And sign up with ebates.com for free and get an additional 4% cash back. There's a reason they are so highly recommended, and a reason for the higher cost, as well.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old. Since it will last SOOO long, the cost per use is actually cheaper than some of the 'cheap' seats. Because those cheap seats don't last more than 2-3 years before they are outgrown and then you're out buying another seat.

Another to consider: The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

Personally, I HATE infant seats. They cost a lot considering you only get to use them for 5-7 months and then you're out shopping again. As a single parent on a seriously limited income, I now realize I should've completely skipped the infant carrier stage. Its not a 'needed' stage in car seats, its just a convenience thing, and a recent - as in the last 15 years or so - invention to have a stay in car base and separate carrier. After baby gets above 10lbs or so, they are a pain in the butt to carry - quite awkward. So its not as convenient as it may at first seem. And some of the 'convenient' ways people use them aren't good.

Carriers should NEVER be placed on grocery carts. It makes the carts unstable and they can tip over, seriously injuring the baby. Also, not all car seats fit all carts, and they don't lock on, they're just sitting there, posing an obvious threat. And some of the carts are shaped or sized in a way that it puts the carrier at an unsafe/uncomfortable angle for the baby. I've seen babies laying in carriers on carts with their head lower than their feet - not a good idea for digestion or spit up.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says Parents and caregivers should never Place an infant carrier on top of the shopping cart. "Many infant-only car safety seats lock into shopping carts, and many stores have shopping carts with built-in infant seats. This may seem safe, but thousands of children are hurt every year from falling out of shopping carts or from the carts tipping over. Instead of placing your baby's car safety seat on the cart, consider using a stroller or front pack while shopping with your baby. "

Also, we are seeing rampant developmental delays becuase babies are in these carriers (and swings, and bouncy seats...) so much. Look around everywhere you go and instead of holding their babies, people have them in these carriers. When on their back and harnessed (and any time a child is in a carrier, he needs to be harnessed, even though its not in a car!) they can not work the muscles they need to develop to crawl, sit up, and walk. In the manuals for these carriers, it even says specifically 'for use in cars and strollers only'! But we all seem to miss that part.

I find using a sling/pouch/wrap a lot more convenient, versatile, and budget worthy. Slings last up to 30-35lbs, so about 3 times the time an infant seat, and you can use one anywhere while still keeping your hands free and keeping baby happy. Not one of those silly snugli or infantino carriers, but something like a ringsling, moby, or maya wrap. Wearing your baby gives everybody what they need. Babies get much needed closeness to mom (or dad, or anyone else for that matter!) and you get your hands free to do what you need to do, as well as you can even breastfeed in one! They offer many different positions to use them in, too.

What's most important no matter the seat you choose, is keeping baby rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life! American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep kids rear facing to the limit of their convertible car seat. All current models go to at least 30lbs, many higher.

A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
In the foreground is a forward facing seat, in the background a rear facing seat. You can see how much trauma the forward facing dummy has to endure. The rear facing child simply rides it out.
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_seiten/kisitest_2002/videos/test2002/frontcrash/maxicosipriori.mpg

Here's another video. You can see how there is NO trauma to the baby, it simply sits there waiting for it to end.

Hi i'm travelling overseas shortly with my husband and baby boy who is going to be 13 months old when we travel. It is a 14 and a half hour flight to Australia direct.
Has any one travelled long distance with a infant, that could give me a few hints on what to bring with me for conveninence
It's my first time travelling with our child .Thanx your ideas will be appreciated.

Answer
I've been flying internationally with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5), and here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me:

FAA regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly free of charge as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat). If you are flying internationally, the airline might charge you (I say might because not all do) a 10-20% fee.

The steward/stewardess should place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Most airlines will provide you with a special baby seat belt that hooks onto yours so your child can be buckled up as well. And depending on the airline and length of flight, the steward/stewardess might give you a crib type thing that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during take-off and landing).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device, but does not mandate it because of the cost to the parents.

1.) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulance, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives you the opportunity to relax a bit.

A CRS is an airline-approved alternative to using a hard-backed seat and is approved for use on aircraft and for use in motor vehicles. Many people confuse it with a regular car seat, which it is not.

This website talks about approved CRS devices and their ratings: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. Parents should call their airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

Ask your airline if they can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you may not be permitted to bring your own CRS on board, and may need to check it as baggage.
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

2.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing you can do is if your son is still nursing, make sure to nurse him. If he is not nursing, give him a bottle to drink (milk, water, juice - it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take with you, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard with you, do not worry.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, OR beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food onto the plane with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

Another trick is that if your son is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to drink, gently rub his neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

3.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your son. A few of his favorite toys, books, and any comfort things such as a blankie. The Fa's will also provide you with a toy or coloring book for your son also.

4.) Pack a few instant hot/cold cereals, instant rice, and other just-add-water packets (age appropriate, of course). The stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water upon request. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food and a few other non-perishable snack items. Drinks will be provided free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request.

5.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your son. You will need this in case he gets sick, spills something on himself, or in case your luggage gets lost. Also bring any medications that you might need for him should he get sick. Do NOT give your son medicine with the hopes of it making him sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

6.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

I hope you have a great trip, and if I can be of any more assistance, please feel free to contact me

Any suggestions on traveling on a long flight with 2 infants?

sahero11

I have to travel alone with my two small children....3-4 months and 18-19 months old children from Germany to the States....any suggestions would be very helpful and appreciated
Also, if my 18 month old has a seat, do I need to have his car seat with me? I guess my question was to general, I am more worried and less prepared when it comes to managing them through the airport. I figured that my baby would have his car seat and the stroller for when we depart but what about my 18 month old, can i put his car seat with my luggage under the plane???? Oh adn this will be a one way trip ....thankfullly we don't have to come back to Germany since daddy will be home for good in Jan

I've been flying internationally with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5), and I fly with them by myself at least 3 times a year.

If you are traveling alone, the airline will make you buy at least one seat for one of your children. There is only one lap child allowed per adult.

Here are some tips that I use when traveling and I hope they will help you:

I have an evenflo aura travel system how do you adjust the straps?

top 5 baby travel systems on Graco - Gecko Baby Gear Collection Bundle | Shop | Kaboodle
top 5 baby travel systems image
Q. I am trying to figure out how to adjust the shoulder straps. I have lost my manuel. My baby's shoulders are higher than the slots that the straps are in. There are black clips on the back of the car seat that allow you to tighten the straps. I tried to take the straps out of these clips but I can't seem to get them out. Please help me soon. I don't believe she is in the seat correctly right now. Thank you.

Answer
I hope this information helps:

1) There are harness anchors (metal clips) located on the bottom of the seat. Push these up through the slot to the front of the seat on both sides. To do this, you will need to pull them toward you, and then turn the anchors to fit through the slots.

2) You should be able to remove the bottoms of the straps at this point. Remove them, then pull the tops of the straps through the slots. (You will need to remove the buckles during this process.)

3) Slide the straps through the slot you need for the correct harness height.

4) Replace the buckles in the correct positions.

5) Replace the bottoms of the straps into the harness anchors.

6) Push the harness anchors through the padding and back into the bottom of the seat. Clip into place.

What are your top ten baby products ever?

Expecting!

I am starting to shop for the new baby and i am worried i will forget something. What were your must haves? What was a waste of money and what do you wish you had but didn't.

Answer
1 - carseat (I like the travel system with stroller kind)
2 - baby carrier - I love the Ergo carrier but also have several others that seldom get used. A Moby wrap is nice for nursing though & good for newborns
3 - clothing of course & whatever type of diapers you plan to use (cloth or disposables)
4 - diaper changing table/station - ours is downstairs & it makes it so much nicer than going up & down stairs all day.
5 - breastpump - but I had to go back to work - it's not as necessary if you stay home & then of course all the stuff that goes with that...breastpads (I think Johnson & Johnson make the best disposables AND cloth ones) - Lansinoh cream for nipples, milk storage bags (they warm MUCH faster whether frozen or just refrigerated), bottles of some sort....my preference is Second Nature
6 - exersaucer - my first LIVED in this thing as soon as he could set up & still asked to get in after he could walk...LOL
7 - Boppy Pillow or Breastfriend - whether you nurse or not - it is a back saver!
8 - Swing - baby may or may not love it. My first hated the swing & never never took to it - but you can't know until you know & many babies love them. They will be a lifesaver if baby likes them for things like showering.
9 - Bumbo Seat - my first loved this thing & we used it until he didn't fit in it. He loved to eat there instead of the highchair..so we packed the bulky highchair up after a certain point & I don't plan to even bother getting it out this time. Our Bumbo has a tray & everything - so it's totally sufficient.
10 - Swaddle-me blankets. Both my babies have loved swaddling but I never got one of these until this time - now I own 5...LOL They are wonderful for a baby that likes swaddling!

Stuff we didn't need that we bought or were given:
With my first - the swing - total waste, same with the highchair
We bedshare with our babies, so I don't really need a bed for them that first year...but I do keep a bassinet for naps, etc. I bought a crib for my first after he was a year & attached it to our bed to give us all a little more room. We didn't need one or want one until then. The nice part is because I waited & just kept an eye out for a deal I got a nearly $500 crib for $99 ob clearance. You definitely don't need a bed in a bag for your crib. They recommend you don't use any bedding in with baby & also no bumper...so just buy the sheets & bedskirt as that is all you are supposed to use anyway. I didn't even do that - since it was attached to our bed I bought an extra twin bedskirt to match our bed & twin sheets. The I made the bedskirt work with tucking & safety pins & I use these: http://www.google.com/products?q=snug+sheets+clips&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=Gz7NS5SDA4WsNe_ciNMP&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CDEQrQQwAg to make the sheets snug. It's very easy.

What kind of Stroller do you prefer?

baby travel systems 3 wheel on Eddie Bauer Trail Hiker 3 Wheel Travel System {Giveaway}
baby travel systems 3 wheel image

K-Rock

I am a first time mom expecting in June and I have heard a lot of different things about strollers. I would like to know do you prefer a 3 wheel stroller (jogger) or a 4 wheel stroller and why? Thanks

Answer
I personally prefer the three wheeled all terrain strollers like Jeep Liberty and BOB strollers because of the front swivel wheel that has the option to lock straight.

I had a Jeep Liberty Urban Terrain with my son because I liked getting out everyday and walking briskly for my exercise.

However, it is a big stroller and my son didn't like it when he was a smaller infant. I wore him in a Snuggli during his very early months, and he finally began enjoying his stroller by the time he was about a year old.

Fortunately most of these all terrain three wheeled strollers have adapters that you can use to put your car set in, turning it into a travel system. However, you cannot jog with this stroller when you have the car seat installed. You must wait until baby has the head and neck strength and stability before taking him or her out on anything more than a stroll.

If I had the budget, I would may have gotten the BOB Revolution, but I liked the basket and other storage options on the Jeep Liberty better.

So bottom line: Three wheelers!

Question about Evenflo Travel System Strollers vs Jogging Stroller?

Momuvtwinb

I have a Evenflo Eurotrek Travel System and was wondering if anyone has tried an Evenflo stroller on gravel and how did it perform? My boys are fixing to start baseball again and I'm wondering if a jogging type stroller with big wheels will be necessary as I plan on taking my 4 month old with me to practices and games as long as the weather permits in her stroller. Some of the ballparks are gravel and I was wondering if anyone has any advice.

Answer
Travel systems are way to bulky! I got the Citi Mini by Babyjogger. Its a 3 wheel stroller with bigger wheels and yet it is not a jogging stroller. Its meant for everyday use on concrete and gravel terrain. Its also pretty lightweight and collapses in half by simply pulling on the handle located on the seat. You can literally collapse it with 1 finger while holding the baby! I think this is the most awesome stroller and its fairly well priced at $219.99

I have that set and I love it. The stroller is easy to open and close, it's smooth to push and easy to click car seat in and out of both the stroller and the base in the car. It's easy to use and adjust. I have no complaints about it.

It's also really easy to clean if baby spits up or anything too.

when u already have a regular one like the big clunky one from a travel system? just curios i have limited funds and a few baby items left to buy before she gets here. is that a must=have item?

Answer
no, i have to say they are a waste! i use mine to take packages into the post office, other than that it sits in the back of the van or in the garage. it is difficult to steer and my kids put their feet down on the ground which makes it tough to use, plus for a baby it does not recline. stick with the bigger stroller!

and FYI they are only 12 bux at target, walmart and toys r us.

When should i start registering for my baby shower?

Jamie

I'm having my baby shower June 12th when should i decide where to register and when?

Answer
Go ahead and register now, I am due June 29th and my showers are sometime in May, there isn't even proper dates set up but my MIL started telling me to make them three weeks ago, I haven't even given out my registry information yet and people have still got online and searched for my information on babiesrus to see if I had made one yet and already bought some stuff. People do check to see if you made one before they get their invitations, I always try to find them first so I can get first dibs on what gifts I want to buy.

Last Sunday my dad bought me a double electric breast pump and a baby bath tub that was better than the one I registered for and sent me an email telling me to take the baby bath tub off of my registry and told me the one he got me. My sister asked me for my home address yesterday and told me to take my swing off of the registry because she is ordering it for me off of amazon and it will be delivered to my house. My mother in law started asking around for what pack n play we like so that means someone on my husband's side of the family wants to buy that, we told her we have one picked out on our target registry so most likely they already have it pulled up. My stepmom called dibs on buying the play activity mat already and asked if I can take the one I have off of my registry so no one else buys it. MIL bought us a eddie bauer travel system before I was even three months pregnant because she found it brand new on sale at sears for $90 and that is our babyshower gift from her.

So you see registering earlier can not hurt at all, it is better to in my own opinion. There are plenty of times when I found the registry before I had got the invitation that I picked a big ticket item and asked if some other people can go in together and we can split the cost of the item to make sure they get at least one big ticket item and they can still buy a small gift. The worst thing that can happen is no one buys anything off of your list until you send out your invitations. I find it easier to just work on it a little each day anyways so you don't forget to put certain things on your list that are often overlooked like thermometers and baby medicine.

what is the best stroller or travel system?

baby travel systems recall on travel system good condition includes pushc For Sale - New / Used Baby ...
baby travel systems recall image
Q. new baby on the way and i am researching strollers, car seats, and pack n plays. what are the best out there?

Answer
Travel systems are bulky and unnecessary. When kept in a car seat a baby can have trouble breathing, and sleeping in the car seat is even worse. So I'm going to talk 'types' rather than brands.

CARSEAT: the current recommendation is to keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible, at least to 2 years old. Look at the first link for information about why rear-facing is so important. There are infant seats that rear-face to 20lbs, and some that rear-face to 30-35lbs. There are also the option of convertible car seats which can go from 5lbs-45lbs (depending on the brand) rear-facing and then forward to as high as 85lbs. The cheapest convertible that goes to 40lbs rear-facing but then is quickly outgrown is the Cosco Scenara available at Wal-mart for $40 (including shipping.) The point being that you want a seat that will rear-face a long time, or if you want to use an infant seat to plan on a rear-facing seat when the baby outgrows the baby seat. I do like the Graco-Snugride 35, which rear-faces to 35lbs, but I've found most babies want to sit up more by 10-12 months and it might be wiser to either get a convertible or get a cheap infant seat and replace it once they're large enough to want a new one.

STROLLERS:
First, for a newborn you want the baby to be able to lay flat (sitting up can decrease oxygen levels.) Also, there is research about babies who face their parents developing better than babies who are faced out towards the public. So, if you can find a stroller that lays flat and faces you then that's what you want. However, it's rather hard to find that, and I personally find that it's easier to get a baby wearing sling (like the Ergo or Moby Wrap) and wear the baby the first 6 months. After that they typically can sit up and it's easier to find a stroller that works for them. Strollers are rarely recalled so you can try them out in the store and then watch to see if someone sells it on craigslist or something. When you try them out try going over different obstacles, larger wheels tend to handle things like sand and obstacles better, but if you're using it for shopping then you want to try weaving in and out of tight corners. If you're using it on parks and trails then you want a different stroller than if you're riding the bus with your baby every day. It's all about where you live and what you're using it for.

Pack n Plays:
Wait on this one. See the second link. As of this year, pack-n-plays FINALLY have a safety standard, and as of last month they have adopted a safety standard for the bassinet attachment (before then they didn't.) There are a lot of deaths from pack-n-plays not working right, and they are not a good place to leave your baby to sleep. With these standards there are exciting changes that probably will happen in just the next year... but it also means there may be a lot of recalls and discontinuing of unsafe pack-n-plays. Also, Disney has just released the first ever machine washable pack-n-play (that's right... before this they were not washable. We can all gross out now.) See third link. To me, that means that the play-yards in the next year or two not only are going to be safer, but they're going to start to be washable! It is NOT worth it to buy a play-yard right now, you'll only regret it in a couple of years when they're better.

BABY CARRIERS:
When I say this I am talking about a chest-carrier, like the Moby Wrap or the Ergo. However there are some like the Baby Bjorn where the baby is dangling from their crotch, and this can contribute to hip dysplasia. The fourth link explains what you want to look for in a wrap, carrier, or sling (or even how to make sure they sit in a car seat.) There are several carriers on the market that hold the baby right, I do personally like the Ergo because it goes from newborn to 40lbs and allows a chest, hip, or back position, the versatility has been something that keeps us using it year after year.

Can infant car seats rest on any stroller?

Q. I've been looking at these Travel System stroller/car seat combo kits, and I haven't actually gone to the store yet. I'm just wondering, do you have to buy the travel system together, or could you buy the car seat and stroller separately? Would they still work together? I'm only asking because I thought I could ask for them as a baby shower gift. Instead of asking for the 170 dollar travel system. I'd ask for the 90 dollar stroller and 50 dollar car seat. That way two different people could buy cheaper gifts.

Answer
If the seat and stroller are the same brand, then yes, they will likely work together with one exception: The Graco SafeSeat does NOT work with all Graco strollers. The Graco SafeSeat is bigger than the Graco Snugride, and most Graco Strollers will fit the snugride, not the SafeSeat. You'd need to register for a graco stroller that specifically says it will fit the Safeseat if that's what you wanted. Steer clear of Evenflo infant seats!!! Very flimsy, constant recalls, and awful recall fixes. They just haven't mastered the art of infant carrier making yet.

The universal car seat carrier strollers can be a good idea, cheaper than a full size stroller and will fit most major brands of infant seats. Less bulk, too, in the trunk. Baby Trend makes one, so does Kolcraft and Combi.

Also, its worth noting that you don't HAVE to get an infant carrier car seat. They are nOT a required stage in car seats. Newborns can go home from the hospital in a rear facing convertible car seat. Convertible car seats last kids until their 2-4 years old (or longer) whereas infant carrier seats are outgrown at 4-7 months, and then you're out shopping for a car seat...again.

as a single parent on a seriously limited income, I now realize I should've completely skipped the infant carrier stage. Its not a 'needed' stage in car seats, its just a convenience thing, and a recent - as in the last 15 years or so - invention to have a stay in car base and separate carrier. Here's why I think its a waste: doesn't last babies very long at all. You spend $60 and up on this carrier that is only going to last 5-8 months! And then you have to purchase a convertible car seat, and somewhere down the line a booster seat. If you skip the carrier phase, you just eliminated one seat. There is now one carrier on the market that promises to fit 99% of babies up to at least their first birthday - Graco SafeSeat1, goes to 30lbs. However, there are limitations to this awesome seat. It really will fit most kids that long, but that's a catch-22. You really going to carry your 25lbs baby in a carrier?! My son was a BIG baby (still is a BIG kid!) and outgrew his carrier at 4 months. And, after baby gets above 10lbs or so, they are a pain in the butt to carry - quite awkward.

So I highly recommend skipping the carrier phase. I think they are more a pain than a blessing, and a wasted of money if you don't have a lot to throw around. Instead, get a convertible car seat that will fit a newborn (more on that later) and a sling, pouch, or wrap. They offer many different positions to use them in, too, and go higher than carrier car seat weights (20-22lbs). Most go to at least 35lbs, so you will get much more use out of it for your money.

OK - so if you choose to skip the carrier phase, be careful about the convertible car seat you choose, b/c not all will fit newborns well. You want it to have low bottom slots.
Perfect options:
The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. It can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode.

Cosco Scenera - $50 at Walmart/Kmart/Target. Great seat for the price. Goes up to 35lbs rear facing, 40lbs forward facing. Great rear facing seat, but is outgrown very quickly forward facing b/c of short top slots and short shell. You'll still get you're $50 worth out of it, though, as it will last most kids to at least 2 years, quadruple the amount of time of an infant seat!

As you're shopping, remember these rules about seats:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)Children should stay rear facing AS LNOG AS POSSIBLE!!!! The 20lbs/1 year rule is outdated and provides a bare minimum for turning kids forward facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration both recommend keeping kids rear facing as long as possible, up to the limits of their seat, preferably until at least 2 years of age. For good reason: A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone. In other countries, rear facing 2 - 3 - 4 year olds is standard, they understand that its safer.
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs.
If you choose to go with an infant seat I would pick the seat you (stay away from Evenflo infant carriers, too many recalls, crappy recall fixes, overall a very cheap seat) and get a universal car seat stroller like Baby Trend Snap n Go, Combi Flash EX, Kolcraft makes one, too. That way you can spend a little less, sell it when you're done, and get a higher end stroller that will last better.

WHY REAR FACING:

In the foreground is a forward facing seat, in the background a rear facing seat. You can see how much trauma the forward facing dummy has to endure. The rear facing child simply rides it out.

Here's another video. You can see how there is NO trauma to the baby, it simply sits there waiting for it to end.
