Answer
Yeast infections are not an STD. Whoever told you that is an idiot. If you believe your friend has an STD, then s/he must be treated for it.

If however it really is a yeast infection, then most ppl do treat themselves. Here's a quick quiz to help your friend make that determination.
http://www.colonhealth.net/free_reports/candique.htm

"Candida is a yeast that lives in the human digestive system. It has the ability to change from a yeast and become a fungus. As a fungus it operates in a similar fashion to any other fungus such as athletes' foot fungus, etc. Candida is kept at low levels by the friendly bacteria that also reside in the digestive tract. The friendly bacteria feed on the Candida, thus a balance in the body is maintained. Modern medicine's "gift" of antibiotics, birth control pills, cortisone and chemotherapy kill this friendly bacteria as do street drugs, alcohol, and junk food diets. Once this friendly bacteria has been destroyed, the yeast begins to overgrow and take over the digestive system. Left untreated, it becomes a fungus and grows into a plant-like structure complete with roots. These roots can break through the intestinal walls, allowing the yeast to travel to other areas of the body such as the sinuses, throat, reproductive organs, the lungs and skin just to name a few. It is capable of producing over 100 symptoms. " http://www.becomehealthynow.com/article/conditionwomen/416/

"Candida albicans is a yeast that lives in the mouth, throat, intestines and genitourinary tract of most humans and is usually considered to be a normal part of the bowel flora (the organisms that coexist with us in our lower digestive tract)...Candida albicans prefers people. Candida enters newborn infants during or shortly after birth. Usually, the growth of the yeast is kept in check by the infant's immune system and thus produces no overt symptoms. But, should the immune response weaken, the condition known as oral thrush can occur as a result. By six months of age, 90% of all babies test positive for candida . And by adulthood, virtually all humans play host to Candida albicans and are thus engaged in a life-long relationship.
Candida coexists in our bodies with many species of bacteria in a competitive balance. Other bacteria act in part to keep candida growth in check in our body ecology . . . unless that balance is upset. When health is present, the immune system keeps candida proliferation under control; but when immune response is weakened, candida growth can proceed unhindered. It is an "opportunistic organism," one which, when given the opportunity, will attempt to colonize all bodily tissues. The uncontrolled growth of candida is known as candida overgrowth. "
http://www.healthexcel.com/docs/_cand1.html

Here are some of the symptoms and treatment for Candida.
"Infection of the penis often results in balanitis (inflammation of the head of the penis).
An infection in the bloodstream can affect the kidneys, heart, lungs, eyes, or other organs causing high fever, chills, anemia, and sometimes a rash or shock. Candida can cause the following problems depending upon the organ infected:
in the kidneys can cause blood in the urine
in the heart can cause murmurs and valve damage
in the lungs can cause bloody sputum (mucus discharge)
in the eyes can cause pain and blurred vision
in the brain can cause seizures and acute changes in mental function or behavior" http://www.healthscout.com/ency/68/312/main.html

"If you have candida, you may experience some or all of these symptoms depending on the severity of this parasitic invasion:

constant fatigue
sinus problems and lots of mucus
interrupted sleep
flu like symptoms
aches and pains in the joints
especially tight neck and shoulder and increased headaches
dental problems
dark circles under the eyes
low grade fever
constipation and or diarrhea
gas and abdominal bloating
mouth and your eyes feel dry
unexplained rashes
dry brittle hair and nails
feeling foggy
restless leg syndrome
irregular heart beat
numbness or tingling in the extremities
feeling faint or light headed
lack of concentration and short term memory loss
shortness of breath
sexual dysfunction
sugar cravings
white coating on the tongue
intolerance to smells such as perfume, chemicals and insecticides

Sister is Traveling To Chile!?

fhussain99

My 20 year old Sister is traveling with a group for Summer for 6 weeks to Chile.

I am so excited that she's going to be taking this trip. I hope she has a wonderful fantastic time and can't wait to hear all about her adventures and experiences.

I do have some questions/concerns.

Basically is it safe? Suggestions you have for her traveling there? I have already sent her a laundry list of questions to answer but I want to know if anyone has been there? What should she avoid? What's Chile like? Is there anything to worry about?

I guess I'm being paranoid, but she's my baby sister and this is a new experience for us.

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Brrrr!!! Remember that Summer in the Northern hemisphere (June-August) is Winter down here in the Southern Hemisphere. Despite the popular image that all of Latin America is toasty warm all year round, a lot of places in Chile get cold, especially in the South. Most days during Winter in Santiago reach freezing at night, but they don't get too much colder than that. PLUS a lot of places don't have heating, so it can be coooooolllld.

She should avoid doing the things you should avoid doing in any big city in the US. Don't flash large amount of cash around (including jewelry, cameras, iphones, etc.) Keep them hidden until you need to use them, and when you need to use them, use wrist straps or the like. Pick-pocketing is popular here, so keep an eye on your belongings at all time, and don't put your wallet in your back pocket. When using the bus or metro, wear your BACKpack on your FRONT. Go into a store to make your call if you need to make a call on the street.

Don't get overly drunk, be aware, and travel in groups. Use the grade-school system of safety-buddy so that one person is always aware of one other person in case of big groups.

Chileans aren't exactly the bubbly personalities like in the Caribbean, but they are warm and friendly, and will show their hospitality by shoving plate after plate of food down your throat, hahaa. No really, they show their love with food.

Chilean food can be really blah, as they don't even use pepper to spice their food. However, pebre, a spicy sauce similar to salsa or pico de gallo in Mexico, can be quite spicy! Popular food here include empanadas, hotdogs (called completos), pastel de choclo, pastel de papas, cazuela, a variety of seafood, and of course asado (grill-outs). There's a Chilean brandy here called Pisco which is really tasty. Typical drinks include Piscola, borgona, and a drink called "Terremonto" (literally: earthquake) made of pineapple icecream, cheap wine, and a splash of Pisco. Yum! Of course, there is beer and wine galore here as well.

Chileans have a dirty sense of humor and will often make an innuendo out of just about anything you say! She won't be here that long, so she probably don't have to worry about that. However, Chileans can be VERY hard to understand, especially if she speaks limited Spanish, because they don't open their mouths when they talk, which leads to not pronouncing their words very well, cutting off their 'd's and 's's. Pelado is pronounced pelao, and gracias is pronounced graciah (the s is made into a puff of air that makes it sound like English words that end in H)

There are also a lot of key words here that she might have learned "differently" in the US.

In the US: avacado, banana, pineapple, strawberry
In US taught spanish: aguacate, banano, anana, fresa
chilean spanish: palta, platano, pina, frutilla

Anddddd, much more. Couchsurfing.org or allchile.net are great resources for any question she may have! :) I'm sure she'll have a lovely time here in Chile! Is she spending the whole time in Santiago? That's where I live if you want to get in contact with me for more info

Baby Trend or Graco; which is better brand for carseat and other baby gear?

baby trend travel systems girls on Signature Series by Graco Trekko 3 Wheel Travel System Stroller with
baby trend travel systems girls image

Iowagirl21

Going to be starting the baby registry and going to be getting some of the baby gear that we need for our little girl that will be here before we know it and we are trying to decide between baby trend and graco. Please help us choose which is better and also give us some possible suggestions on patterns also. We could really use the help.

Answer
My Baby Trend gear has outlasted every Graco thing we've bought, except the Graco 35. However, the Baby Trend infant seat (as highly tested as it is) has a really annoying buckle system, or used to, so I don't like that. But everything else, I'd go with Baby Trend first.

I'm not brand loyal though. Do research. If you see that there's a Graco thing that is getting high scores from folks and is doing very well according to actual usage, go with that. Or with Baby Bundle from Blah brand. Don't limit yourself. Don't get travel systems, they are often very limiting. But it's like if your dream stroller is by Chicco, and your car seat is by Evenflo, and your bassinet is by something else... well shoot. That's fine. There's no reason to limit to a brand. I do recommend though if you get a playpen, look at the washable ones and make sure they conform to the higher level safety requirements put out this year.

Where can I find car seat/stroller travel systems for girls that are NOT pink and under $200?

Where can I find car seat/stroller travel systems for girls that are NOT pink and under $200?
I live in northern Indiana. I can order online (for stores that offer online purchases)

Answer
Things to consider. Why? I mean, except for transporting your baby in the car, a car seat should not be used for things like riding in the stroller, or on shopping carts, or things like that. It comes from the studies done in the last year or so that shows that a baby left to sleep or sit in an inclined position for too long can get into an oxygen lowered state. Ie, it's not good for them to be in an inclined position like a car seat for longer than 2 hours full in a day, until they're older than about 6 months old.

Now, since recalls done on strollers are far less than recalls done on car seats, you can get the stroller from someone selling second-hand (just doublecheck recall lists) and get a better car seat. The Chicco brand stroller, for instance, lays flat, making it usable from newborn on up. :) On Ebay, I can see a few for under $100 (make sure they say fully reclining.) I'm sure you could find some at Craigslist as well. :) Otherwise, you could consider using a baby chest carrier for the first few months until your baby is old enough (3-6 months) to sit at a slight incline, then you can get a stroller that nearly reclines all the way.

If you do that, my favorite travel system is the Baby Trend, at least to recommend to people. It's under $200, the car seat is one of the top safety rated (though the buckles are a pain in the neck I'll warn you now), and the stroller is a jogger that you can use as a stroller. I LOVE ours. They recline far enough back for about 2+months, so I wouldn't put a newborn in it, but if you can last the 2 months then it lasts to 40lbs. Only negative is that the basket is only rated to carry 5lbs, so you can't bring a huge diaper bag with you (or if you do you have to carry it.)

Shoot though. If you're dead set on a travel system, you can always find someone selling the stroller that goes with a travel system, buy that for a cheaper price, and then use the rest of the money to get the car seat, and get it cheaper that way. But I'm not a fan of travel systems. To me it seems like it ropes folks into thinking a baby should sleep in the car seat and it's just not safe.

Do you know any good pushchairs?

baby travel systems mamas papas on ... travel costs, maclaren buggie, silver cross, graco travel system, car
baby travel systems mamas papas image
Q. I am pregnant with my 3rd child, please will you give me some pushchair ideas, I am thinking of getting a quinny. Before I had twin boys so I just got a double silver cross one.

Answer
Don't go for a quinny I had one for my daughter when she was born and I hated it she wasnt comfortable in it and the hood didnt offer much protection the seat was small I got rid of it after just 5 months and I got the pliko pramette instead and was alot happier with it I wish I had it from the start. Ive just had my second baby and ive went for the mamas and papas pliko pramette again and I am so happy with it, it is so cosy in pramette mode and easy to use and can be used as a travel system aswell so its compact but still has plenty of space for baby.

does anyone own the Mamas and Papas pliko+ pushchair?

Girlygiggl

I'm looking into purchasing this Pliko+ pushchair and i was wondering if anyone has had it. i know you can buy the pram liner to change the pushchair into a pram, this really appeals to me as it grows with baby. ive read a few reviews on it and it seems particulary good. im also wondering about the silver cross 3D, so anyone who has had an experience with the pliko+ or mamas and papas in general i would be very grateful to hear from you. thank you

Answer
Hiya! Im due to give birth anyday... I have brought the mamas and papas pliko pramette. I put it up on friday and have been having a play with it. Its FANTASTIC!!! Also i have brought the carseat to match with the base. So its easy to go in and out of the car. You can also use the car seat on the pram base to make it a travel system. I perfer using just the pram myself. Its a pleasure to push!
My best friend had the sliver cross but i think the mamas and papas is alot nicer.

Good luck!
Jen :)

Need help finding a double stroller with infant seat?

baby travel systems at target on Support Call: 888-938-4977
baby travel systems at target image

SweetBabyC

My son is 9 months and now im expecting another one. Im going to just sell his travel system and get a new one. So that means i need to find a double stroller that comes with an infant seat. Ive been looking everywhere and cant seem to find one. Does anyone know where i could buy one?

Answer
You should be able to find new ones at any store that sells baby items... Target, Walmart, Baby Depot, Babies R Us, etc. or you can check online. For big purchase items many online stores have free shipping.

If you are looking for used check craigslist and your local newspaper ads. Once garage sale season starts you can also check the garage sale ads every weekend for ones that list double strollers... just be sure to get there soon after they open because they go quick! You can also call around to local stores that sell used children's items (like Once Upon A Child) to see if they have any or if they would put you on a waiting list when one comes in. Another option is just to ask around at work or among your mom friends to see if anyone has one sitting in their garage that they'd like to sell.

We use ours all the time for our baby and toddler and it is great for the mall and the park! If you can't find used, buying new can be spendy but I think they are worth it and they have a fair resale value when you want to get rid of it.

Help getting a stroller and car seat?

Anna

I want to buy a car seat and stroller togeather as a travel system. I looked at walmart, baby depot, babies r us, and target and can't find a neutral one that I like. ANy Ideas where I can find one?

Answer
You can't find a system you like or just a design you like. You can always find a system you like and get a carseat cover. Check out e-bay. They have tons of them. Some of the stores on their will let you pick out the colors and fabrics. We just bought 2 for our unborn twins.

Infant & convertible car seats...help! ?

baby travel systems vs convertible car seats on Travel System Vs Convertible Car Seat Pictures
baby travel systems vs convertible car seats image

Tatiana S

I'm trying to pick an infant car seat and a convertible car seat for my baby due in March. So far, I think I'm going with the Graco Snug Ride (devon) & maybe the Recaro Signo Convertible seat. My only concern is that the Recaro is very expensive (almost 300), and I don't know how long I'll use it. It says it goes up to 70lbs, but since I don't have any other children, I don't know what age that is.

So basically, i want to know if the brands I'm picking are good, and how old (generally speaking) is a 70lb. child?

Also, any opinions on a travel system stroller vs, an infant car seat with a stroller frame?

Answer
My son is 5 1/2 and only 43-45 lbs. So that car seat should last you for as long as your child needs to be in a 5-point harness. When you eventually need a high back booster they're not very expensive. The Recaro is highly rated. You could even skip the infant-carrier style seat, the Recaro Signo can be used with babies as small as 5 lbs. Many people never use and infant-carrier style seat and use a wrap to carry their newborn. But if you decide to get an infant carrier car seat the Graco Snug Ride is fine.

I had a travel system with my first child and separate car seat and stroller with my second and personally preferred not to have the travel system because I prefer to use a jogging stroller even when strolling in the mall.

travel systems vs. convertible car seats?

katelyn.

Is it better to get a travel system and have to buy a bigger car seat later?
Or get a convertible car seat and a separate stroller?

Answer
We got a travel system so we could clip the car seat in to the stroller, we can still use the stroller without the car seat so we saw it as a win win. It's a lot easier to just clip the car seat in than to take baby out of the car seat and put them into the stroller, especially if they're sleeping.

I was going to get a carrier any way so it just made sense for us.

What do you say when you sell your baby shower gifts?

baby travel systems with bassinet on UPPA Baby VISTA Stroller Bassinet Travel System MICA SILVER ~MSRP $679
baby travel systems with bassinet image

He leaves

Have you ever received a baby shower gift and sold it? What do you say when when the person who bought it for you asks about how baby likes it? or If it's a big item IE swings, travel systems, carseats, bassinets and they ask about it while visiting do you tell them you've sold the item? Just curious?
I'm asking because I see alot of people advertising for things they received at a baby shower on craigslist and I was more curious if alot of people do this? I never did, but I also didn't get duplicates or anything like that.

Answer
No, tell them that you absolutley adored their gift, but you had to exchange it because the car seat didn't fit properly in your car, the baby fell in love with the swing that you now have, the bassinett was perfect but you realized baby was getting so big so fast that you exchanged it for a larger one, etc. I guess the point is not to hurt their feelings and let them know that their gift was not wasted. Wouldn't you want someone to exchange your gift for something they really needed?I think saying that you sold it is a bit harsh and that you never appreciated it to begin with.

What are you going to buy as opposed to registering for it?

my due

I'm 17 years old and 8 weeks pregnant. My family is not supportive so I'm pretty much going to be doing everything with just the help of my friends and my baby's father. What should I put money away to buy as opposed to registering for it for my baby shower? I'm of course going to get the travel system (carSeat/stroller) , the bassinet , and the outfits for hospital pictures and coming home. Anything else I should get myself instead of just hoping for it?

Answer
What I plan on doing is having my baby shower a few weeks after I find out the sex of my baby. I plan on putting everything I want/need on it. After my baby shower is over, then I can decide more easily what to buy and what not to buy. Hope this helps :)

Edit: Yes, I do plan on buying a crib, swing, changing table, and the other more expensive stuff. But I'd ask for a bouncer, playpen, clothes, bottles, etc.

can mamas & papas pliko p3 be forward and rear facing?

lisa b

i got a mamas and papas pliko p3 secondhand from my friend and was wondering if it can face both ways? thanks!
she has moved away and this is the first of me using it

Answer
Why not just ask your friend? She should know.

I'm not familiar with the brand, but I'll look it up online and find the answer for you.....

*All I've found online is talking about the travel system with the stroller. If its just a carrier (has the handle on it so that you can carry baby while he/she is still fastened in), then no, you cannot turn it around. It is strictly rear facing. There should be warning stickers on the car seat that say "Rear Facing Only" or "Forward facing after 20 lbs and 1 year of age" or something similar.

What all do I need for baby?

best baby travel systems 2010 on of party - extreme form of three kinds of distribution system ...
best baby travel systems 2010 image
Q. What all do I need exactly? So far I have a baby bath and a diaper bag. I've picked out a Pack-N-Play with a bassinet (I'm moving in January so I'll be getting a crib after the move. It'll just make things a little easier). I've also picked out a swing, bouncy seat, bottle warmer, baby carrier, baby moniter, diaper pail, and a wipes warmer. Clothes, diapers, wipes, pacifiers, bottles blankets, health care stuff I'm just going to get in the store (easier than looking online.) I also have a travel system (stroller / car seat) picked out. Is there anything I'm missing?

â¥â¥â¥ Isabella Rose Due July 28, 2010 â¥â¥â¥
My mom will be giving me her breast pump that she used so I don't have to purchase one :)
Also... What brand of diapers and wipes do you recommend?

Answer
-breast feeding supplies-storage, nursing pads, creams, a nursing bra for you
-towels and rags for baby
-mittens and hats and socks
-cloth diapers for burping
-baby laundry detergent
-a mesh laundry bag (delicates bag) for small baby items such as socks, mittens, bibs, etc. keeps them together in the wash so nothing gets lost or stuck under the agitator
-car seat accessories- head support, strap covers (so the straps don't rub the neck)
-bottle cooler to keep bottles cold on the go (like if you make one while you're out and baby doesn't finish it), they have single ones that come with an ice pack
-waterproof pads/sheet savers to put in pack n play to protect from leaks and spit up or protect surfaces (bed, floor) when changing baby
-you may want to have a small thing of formula on hand, just in case you need it. my daughter had jaundice really bad and had to be on formula full time even though I had planned to breast feed. We had a can at home, so we didn't have to run out and get some the first few days
-travel wipes case for diaper bag
-play gym for baby to lay on and look at
-some kind of musical toy, my daughter goes to sleep really well if we wind up her musical giraffe or turn on the piano (precious planet kick n play piano, plays for a while and has lights) or your pack n play may have a musical attachment

I prefer Luvs and Pampers diapers because my baby has thin legs and the legs on these fit better. Huggies are good, but the leg holes are to big for my little girl. My daughter is 6 weeks old and is just now almost to big for newborn diapers. It all depends on the baby. Buy a variety of sizes of diapers, you can always take them back.
I like huggies wipes and pampers wipes so far, but I haven't tried a bunch of different ones. Parent's Choice (Walmart brand) are good, except the refill packs don't like to "feed" through the hole in our warmer like they are supposed to.

Which is the best full size stroller?

B

We have a baby due in about 2 months and I am in need of a stroller...and tylenol! My head hurts from reading so many reviews. I started researching strollers months ago and I feel like I've made no progress. I want a stroller that is well built and durable, don't care too much about the weight (I've had a quatto tour deluxe before), has parent tray with cupholders and child snack tray, comfy for long trips, bassinet option would be great, suitable for newborns, travel system/accepts an infant seat with bar, all-terrain tires would be nice and has a easy fold. I've looked at Chicco and don't really care for that stroller, bought the bumbleride indie 2010 but I think I'm returning it (the plastic under the seat/back cushion is flimsy and I don't like the recline pull strap thingy) and would like something better than the old graco I used to have. The britax chaperone travel system seemed perfect to me but there are very few and really mixed reviews. I want the stroller I buy to be the first and last without dropping $1000 on it.

Answer
The britax chaperone travel system looks pretty nice, though I've never tried it myself. However I will give you some tips. We have three kids-7, 4 and 2. All of them have been in strollers and baby carriers galore. Here are my tips of what a good stroller should have:
1. Big wheels-umbrella strollers have smaller wheels that make it harder to turn in tight spaces-think grocery stores and malls.
2. Hooks for all your bags you're going to carry. You can buy these separately. (Just remember the stroller might tip if there's too many bags and not enough baby in the stroller!)
3. Easy access to the bottom/big mesh area-for the diaper bag
4. Area up top for sippy cups/bottles. Makes it easier than tossing it in bottom compartment. Also a tray for baby after a few months for his food.
5. Straps to adjust seat recline are nice and easy to handle.
6. Simple seat belts that will open and close with a thick layer of food residue on them, which they will have. Also should be able to open them with one hand.
7. Baby carrier should click into carrier, most do and it's nice to push instead of carry.

Try these out on some strollers in the store and don't stress too much! Just focus on having a healthy baby! The easy part is having one. The hard part is trying to carry the carrier, push an umbrella stroller and keep the oldest one close!

Congratulations on your baby and I hope he is

What's the difference between a travel system and a convertible car seat?

baby travel systems 3 in 1 on in-1 Travel System with Pram, Car Seat, Pushchair NEW, Girl/Boy ...
baby travel systems 3 in 1 image

Jillian Ir

The car seat you get with the travel system, is that going to last and turn into a seat you can use as your baby grows or is that only an infant seat? I am a first time mother and am trying to get everything I need, but this one has kind of stumped me.
Can I covertible carseat be used as a rear facing infant seat?

Answer
The seat that comes with a stroller is an infant only, rear facing only seat. Most infants outgrow their infant seat at 4-6 months, as most only go to 20-22lbs. and 26inches or so. The only one that is bigger is the Graco SafeSeat Step 1. Its made to hold up to 30lbs. They claim that 97% of infants will fit in the seat until their 1st birthday. A convertible car seat will do both rear and front facing. You 'convert' it front facing when the baby has reaches the limits for rear facing. NOTE: Keep babies rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!! Not just to 20lbs/1year. That is the bare minimum for when you can. Their bones are too fragile to properly withstand crash forces, and rear facing is the safest position.

The infant carriers are convenient, but quite frankly, a sling is a heck of a lot more convenient, and slings like the Maya wraps (and lots of look alikes) can be used in 4-5 different ways up to 40lbs! I HATE seeing babies constantly put in their carriers. Babies were meant to be held, not put in seats all the time. Also, infant car seats were meant to be used in the car or stroller - not everywhere else. Even the manual usually states: 'not for use in the house, boat, or anywhere else besides a passenger vehicle'. So, if you use them correctly, they really aren't all that convenient. I mean, have you ever tried carrying around a 15lbs baby in a carrier? UGH! Painful. A sling is easier and allows your hands to be free (much better for grocery shopping, dining, etc. you name it!) Also, babies like it better.

You don't have to have an infant carrier. Depending upon the size of your baby, you could put him straight into a convertible. If you're going to do that, spring for a convertible that has the infant padding in it, otherwise it may not work. That should be fine as long as baby is 5lbs or over. If you're really looking to cut costs, I'd cut the infant seat out of your shopping plan. You'll have to get a convertible when he outgrows the infant seat anyways, so an infant is an extra. The best convertibles are ones with high harness slots and high weight limits both rear and front facing. Here's some to look at:
Fisher Price Safe Voyage, up to 33lbs rear facing, up to 55lbs forward facing, 17" top slots. Made by Britax, without the bells and whistles at a fraction of the cost! $130
Britax Marathon/Decathalon/Boulevard: all 3 same shell, up to 33lbs rear facing, up to 65lbs front facing, 17" top slots. Decathalon and Boulevard have the infant cushioning. Britax seats have built-in lockoffs so you never have to use a locking clip again! Wide belt paths make it easier to use, too. Many seats can cut and scrape your hands when you try and install them. They sound expensive, but they last longer than most other convertibles. $269 and up

Sunshine Kids Radian65 and Radian80. Both rear face to 33lbs, front face to 65lbs/80lbs. Top slots 18". GREAT seat if it fits in your car. $199, I believe. Lasts a LONG time, saves on buying other seats.

So, if you're looking to save money, actually skip Walmart, they're seats won't hold many kids long enough because of low weight limits and low harness slots. If you've got a tiny child, it'd be ok, but for average or big kids it won't work. Kids should be harnessed AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! No 4-year-olds in boosters, please!

What happens if you introduce solids to your baby too late?

Q. My son is not ready for solids (3 1/2 months), but I was wondering if there was negative results of introducing solids too late. And when is the latest you should introduce solids?

Answer
solids should be introduced anytime between 6-8 months .. before that they do nothing for nutrition .. the baby's intestines are still not mature enough to absorb much from them before 6 months ..if they are given its just to dveelop different tastes ..

When should I introduce solid food to my baby?

You can introduce solids any time between 4 and 6 months if your baby is ready. Until then, breast milk or formula provides all the calories and nourishment your baby needs and can handle. His digestive system simply isn't ready for solids until he nears his half-birthday.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breastfed exclusively for at least six months â though parents will attest that some babies are eager and ready to eat solids earlier.
How will I know when my baby's ready?

Your baby will give you clear signs when he's ready to move beyond liquid-only nourishment. Cues to look for include:

* Head control. Your baby needs to be able to keep his head in a steady, upright position.
* Losing the "extrusion reflex." To keep solid food in his mouth and then swallow it, your baby needs to stop using his tongue to push food out of his mouth.
* Sitting well when supported. Even if he's not quite ready for a highchair, your baby needs to be able to sit upright to swallow well.
* Chewing motions. Your baby's mouth and tongue develop in sync with his digestive system. To start solids, he should be able to move food to the back of his mouth and swallow. As he learns to swallow efficiently, you may notice less drooling â though if your baby's teething, you might still see a lot of drool.
* Significant weight gain. Most babies are ready to eat solids when they've doubled their birth weight (or weigh about 15 pounds) and are at least 4 months old.
* Growing appetite. He seems hungry â even with eight to ten feedings of breast milk or formula a day.
* Curiosity about what you're eating. Your baby may begin eyeing your bowl of rice or reaching for a forkful of fettuccine as it travels from your plate to your mouth.

Is India really a 3rd world, developing country?

I would reeealllyyyy like an answer from some sort of a history expert
Or someone that just really knows what theyâre talking about.
Because Iâm 17 years old. I came from India to the U.S when I was 7.
And well, in my textbooks in school it shows dead bodies laying on the ground and beggars everywhere
And thatâs really a small portion or certain cities/providences in India. They make India seem like the poorest underprivileged nation in the world and as if the entire nation consists of small villages and shacks with no electricity. I mean I donât want to be bias just because Iâm from there. I would really like to know the truth. My AP world history teacher said itâs one of the richest nations on earth in 2013 due to it military power, its technology, their education, their culture and the successful people that have migrated here.
Where as, to foreigners India seem likes like pure filth! And while that maybe the case in certain distinct areas, every nation has itâs ups and downs. Iâm not trying to root for India nor am I against it, but honestly, is it still a 3rd world country. It has really become advanced from the last time I went there in â12.
However I agree that India has its own crazy issues. A five year old girl getting raped, a tourist getting gang raped, a girl poured acid on her face by her father because he didnât want a girl, a baby girl being sold on face book, bombs going off due to radical Muslims. I know itâs not utopia Im aware of that.

But we have everything that America does. Literally. When it comes to the environment, education, maybe more culture and differentiation in foods, religious shrines for all sorts of unique religions, beautiful clothing, luxurious amentities that can all be offered in the U.S. too.
So, what do you think?
Thanks for the feedback.

Answer
No it's really not. It has changed dramatically from what it was a decade ago. It's definately not a 3rd world country. It's a fast developing economy. It's one of the world's richest & powerful (defense) countries. As you might know it's a huge country (7th largest) it will take quite sometime to get it on par with other developed countries. Major cities are world class with modern infrastructure and educated people. The problem lies in the villages where illiteracy and poverty dominates, but that's all fast changing and will catchup with the cities in the next few years. Literacy rate has increased quite a lot compared to what it was a decade ago. Poverty is still an issue as the population is humongous. Another factor hindering the growth of the nation is CORRUPTION. All the other problems would be overcome in the next decade or so but it's very difficult to tackle corruption which has permeated into the system from the lowest of the scales to the highest. But again this a common problem. I have travelled to many developed and developing countries and India is certainly among the best 'developing' nations. However, it still has a long way to go to be amongst the advanced economies.Whatever the way it is, but there is this certain thing about India you will never find anywhere in the world. The people, culture, values, festivities, languages, cusines, geographical and demographical diversity, it feels vibrant! There's so many things to be proud about this nation, but the negative aspects are always highlighted especially by the snobs from the so called "developed" nations.

Please tell me what it's like if you've adopted a child?

nick

My wife and I are certainly NOT rich but we'll pass all and any background checks. And so will our house small as it is. We're still under 50 years of age, and in good health so far...

If you're an adoptive parent please tell me what you went through, money, time, travel location, good and bad experiences and was it worth it?

Answer
An adoption seminar would be best. Also, buying books on adopting, and such are also great.

My husband and I have 12 children- 7 biological, and 5 adopted.

The adoption process is quite long & stressful, but 100% worth it in the end!
Are you wondering about domestic (in the US) or international adoption? We adopted boy/girl twins from India, a boy from Cambodia, a girl from Ethiopia, & a boy from the US. The situations varied & were different in many ways because of laws that come into play with different countries. So first, research where you would like to adopt, and come to fully understand their laws & regulations as well as their culture.

I too hate when couples who want to adopt ask about money, but it is a true part of adoption so i will put my opinions aside and answer your question: The total cost of adopting varies from $0 to more than $40,000, depending on a number of factors.

Foster Care Adoptions$0 - $2,500
Licensed Private Agency Adoptions$5,000 - $40,000+
Independent Adoptions$8,000 - $40,000+
Facilitated/Unlicensed Adoptions$5,000 - $40,000+
Intercountry Adoptions$7,000 - $30,000

Traveling was a big part of adopting. Travel was not required when i adopted from India, but i decided to go anyway (i adopted as a single parent then). We had twins when we decided to adopt from Ethiopia, so we could not travel, & it was not required. For Cambodia however, it was required that at least one of us stayed between 4-10 days. As i said before, check out where you would like to adopt from to learn about the laws. Adopting from the US is a little different when it comes to traveling.

OF COURSE IT WAS WORTH IT! Adopting is 100% a gift. All of our children are amazing and we would do it over and over again.
Here is some advice:
Though i would 100% wish that parents adopted older children (because they age out of this system & are more likely to not be adopted as they get older), adopting a younger child will probably be "easier" so to speak. The older the children are, the harder it is to instill your culture & values in them (which is why babies are mostly adopted). Also, older children have lived through harder conditions, and may rebel. We adopted our daughter from Ethiopia when she was 3, and we had trouble making her know that she was okay & safe (she lived in a poor orphanage with 4 children per crib). But if you try your best & never give up, it will all end up well.

I hope that if you still want to adopt, you fully look over everything & come to a complete understanding of it all. It's more than just wanting a child. In the end, you become more blessed than you could ever imagine.

I am due to have a baby Feb 14th and have a question about my carseat?

Smith 15F

I purchased a Graco snugride 35 carseat because the reviews on it were great. I love the carseat and feel very confident that it will be a great purchase for us! The series that I bought offers a matching single and double stroller. HOWEVER, my husband does not want to invest our money in either of the stroller that come in the series. He wants to get a jogging stroller instead, and preferrably a double jogger. My question is, does anyone know if there is a jogger (single or double) out there that can accomodate a Graco stroller? I did buy the Graco stroller frame that the carseat locks into but it is not a jogger. I have seen a few joggers that have the ability to have an attachment hooked on to hold a carrier/carseat but mostly they are for like brands (ie: baby trend jogger with attachment to hold baby trend carrier/carseat). If anyone knows of a jogger out there that will accommodate a Graco carseat/carrier I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much!

Answer
The Graco excursion is a 3 wheeled travel system

Although, car seats are not recommended for long periods of time. So get a phil and teds, a single jogger converts to double and a excellent pushchair. The phil and teds does hold a maxi cosi car seat and a phil and teds car seat

Hope this helps - good luck with the forthcoming baby and congrats x

just wondering if anyone has this buggy adn what do you htink i had decided on the mychoice 4 but now i thinkin i love the beep!! my bf isnt too keen on it..id be happy to change his mind :)

Answer
Hi The Beep Plus is a great package as you get a hi-tech buggy with all the other items for a lot less than a Quinny. The carrycot is from the birth and the buggy is suitable from 6 months.

The sister product is the Ego which looks similar but has 4 wheels, so the buggy is suitable from birth.

If you happen to be in our area we would bring you one to see, but the web is a big place so its unlikley.

Both systems are great value from a long established Irish manufacturer.

We have deals on both at the moment and would be happy to answer any question on the phone or via email.

If you like iCandy but want to hang on to your £1k then have a look at our I'COO's, sturdy, shiny and eye catching. They are not cheap but are also good value.

Best wishes

What will be the best way to take my 8 months old child on an airplane for the first time?

Harry

He is 8 months old and will be riding on my lap with me. Anyone have any sugestions or tips that can make this trip easy for the both of us. He does not breast feed and we will be in the air for about 4 hours with a layover in between.

Answer
I've been flying internationally with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5), and here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me and I hope will help you:

1.) You will need to have all your babys documents in order. If traveling within the country you generally do not need an ID, but it is always good to keep a notarized copy of his birth certificate with you. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

FAA regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly free of charge as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat).

The steward/stewardess should place them in a front seat where they will have more room. Most airlines will provide you with a special baby seat belt that hooks onto yours so your child can be buckled up as well. And depending on the airline and length of flight, the steward/stewardess might give you a crib type thing that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during take-off and landing).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device, but does not mandate it because of the cost to the parents.

2.) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit.

A CRS is an airline-approved alternative to using a hard-backed seat and is approved for use on aircraft and for use in motor vehicles. Many people confuse it with a regular car seat, which it is not. http://faa.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=29&p_created=1071174367&p_sid=mn66D6wi&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NCZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWNoaWxk&p_li=&p_topview=1

This website talks about approved CRS devices and their ratings: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. Parents should call their airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

Ask your airline if they can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you may not be permitted to bring your own CRS on board, and may need to check it as baggage. http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

3.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing you can do to help with the ear popping, is give your child a bottle to drink (milk, water, juice - it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard (as long as your child is with you), do not worry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food onto the plane with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

Another trick is that if your child is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to nurse or drink, gently rub his neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

4.) Pack a few instant hot/cold cereals, instant rice, and other just-add-water packets (age appropriate, of course). The stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water upon request. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food and a few other non-perishable snack items, such as cheerios. Drinks will be provided free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request.

5.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your child. A few of his favorite toys, books, and any comfort things such as a blankie. It is also a good idea to buy a few inexpensive toys that you will give to him only once on the plane. It will hep to keep him occupied.

6.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case he gets sick, spills something on himself, or in case your luggage gets lost.

7.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Baby nail clippers and scissors are not allowed though. Just remember the new regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use.

8.) Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

Also it is a good idea to have a check-up with your doctor before leaving to make sure your child is healthy enough to fly. If he has even a slight cold, the pressure in her ears during take-off and landing (even if you do the precaution methods) could leave his ears aching for days after the flight.

Most doctors recommend that if anyone is sick (such as being stuffed up or already having an earache), not to take the flight because of the potential damage to the ears. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if they are sick because of this danger.

9.) Bring any medications that you might need for your child should he get sick or that he takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making him sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

10.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

I hope they have a great trip, and if I can be of any more assistance, please feel free to contact me

Does anyone have any suggestions on flying with a 5 month old? How do I make them "not" cry??

lil_ny_swe

My 5 month old daughter and I will be flying this weekend and I would love some suggestions on how to keep her from crying. At 5 months old they donât really do anything and they are not really interested in anything so this is going to be fun. A little crying is fine, but I donât want her going at it for more than a few minutes. Unfortunately, I have an hour layover which will give me enough time to change her diaper and go for a stroller walk. The plane rides are 2 hours then the layover then an hour long. But from anyone that has done this before your suggestions would be so appreciative. I guess the only other thing I can do is sit near the engines or at the wayyyyy back of the plane.

9.) Bring any medications that you might need for your child should she get sick or that she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

10.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

I hope they have a great trip, and if I can be of any more assistance, please feel free to contact me
