travel system or separate stroller/car seat?

carcar

i want to save money by not having to buy a new car seat for my newborn (she'll be coming in october)
i've been looking at travel systems but it looks like they usually only work for babies up to 20 pounds, while if i were to buy a stroller and car seat separate, it looks like they can accomodate babies up to 40 pounds...
i'm so confused and i really need advice on this
what should i buy before the baby comes!!
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=sc_pfc_r_4_0_1041968/602-1231252-8529404?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000E0IKT4

this is kind of what i was looking at, and buying the car seat that fits.

but really-- i'm so clueless and i don't have close friends or sisters or anything to offer advice and the last kid my mom had was in 89 so... her advice is a littttttle outdated!

Answer
If you're going to go with an infant seat (you could just skip that step and use a convertible designed for use with infants through preschoolers) then I would definitely check out the Graco Safeseat1. It will last your baby longer than any other infant carrier on the market, as it allows for taller and heavier babies, or, for smaller babies, will last a long time. It will last most babies for at least their first year. Most infant carriers are outgrown between 4-6 months of age, and then you have to move to a rear facing convertible car seat. With a Safeseat, some babies fit until they are 18 months old!

The best thing for you to do would be to visit a baby boutique (here we have Babyland and USA Baby) or Babies R Us and try out the seat in your car. The BEST car seat is the one that 1)fits your baby, you won't be able to tell this yet, but any infant seat should be fine on this count
2)fits your car - this is what you want to make absolutely sure of. Car seats are NOT universal.
3)will be used correctly each and every time. Make sure that you are able to easily install it correctly, or plan on leaving it alone. Make sure the carrier is easy for you to put on and off the base so that you'll be assured to do it correctly every time. Make sure the harness adjuster (the strap you pull to tighten the harness) is easy for you to use.

Those are things to look at, and then, once you've picked a particular brand and model, choose a pattern. Infant seats come in lots of patterns. Here's some things to steer clear of:
1)Used seats: gigantic no-no see links below.
2)3 point harnesses. Babies have managed to slip out of them, especially if it is a very small baby or a preemie. There becomes a huge gap between the crotch strap and the baby's pelvic area, with no belts over the hips to help make it fit better. Check the pics out in this thread on car-seat.org: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=14982&highlight=three+point+harness and here: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=21450&highlight=three+point+harness

ON the other hand, it really could be a savings to you to skip the infant seat altogether, and pick out a great stroller that will last you as long as you need it, since lots of the travel system strollers are kind of crappy in my opinion. You could go straight to a convertible car seat that can be used for a newborn through toddler. If you get one with high harness slots (where the harness is at the shoulders) and a high weight limit, you may even be able to get by with one seat for 4-6 years! Remembering of course, that car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture. Some GREAT choices:
Evenflo Triumph Advance (NOT the original Triumph, the Advance is different: rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 50lbs, will last the average child until 5 years of age. For a newborn, I'd go with the $150 version at Babies R Us, it has more supportive padding. This car seat is awesome. The harness has endless height adjustment, meaning, you put it exactly where it supposed to be, AND you get to move it without taking the seat out of the car, without re-threading the harness straps. No other car seat does this. And there is no pain in the butt strap to pull to tighten the harness - you tighten and loosen it using the knobs on the sides. There is a less padded version at Walmart/Target for $130. Wide open belt path makes it easy to install. And even once it is forward facing, it can still be reclined, great for when toddlers sleep. 17" top slots.
Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe. This seat is made by Britax for Fisher Price, it is a watered down Britax Marathon. Britax quality at less than half the cost! About $150, cheaper on sale online. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward faces to 55lbs. Easy to install. Lasts most kids 5-6 years. 17" top slots.
Britax Marathon - this one may not fit the tiniest newborns - though it is supposed to go from 5lbs like the others. You will need rolled up blankets on the babies sides as it doesn't come with any newborn padding. Pay extra for a Britax Boulevard or Decathalon and it comes with the newborn padding. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, top slots are 17" tall. Will last most kids 5-6 years. Many 6 year olds still fit in it. Also, it can be tethered rear facing (read instructions!) giving added security. Has built-in lockoffs so you never have to use a locking clip (trus me, they'er a pain!) which is needed in vehicles pre-1997 or w/seatbelts that don't lock. Easiest car seat I've ever installed in my life, no matter what car I put it in it goes in in under 2 minutes. Yes, its expensive, but worth every penny b/c of how long it lasts, and the added features that make it easy to use.
That's about it. I really wouldn't bother with any model that only goes to 40lbs. Kids should be kept in a 5 point harness as long as possible, and a seat that only goes to 40lbs will only keep the average child in it till 4 years old! No 4 year old should be using a booster seat! Save yourself buying another harnessed seat later.
Remember these things:
1) the best car seat fits your car, your child, and will be used correctly 100% of the time
2) kids should stay rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Not just to 20lbs/1 year. See links for why.
3) after being turned forward, kids should stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. Being graduated from each car seat stage is not something to be looked at with anticipation - each stage marks lesser safety.

Do a search on any of the seats listed above and you'll find sites that have them. The Evenflo TRiumph Advanced you can find locally, though. The other two are going to be cheapest online.

P.S. If it were me - you can tell my preference is to skip the carrier - it is a total pet peeve of mine. People use those carriers too much! I see babies sitting in them everywhere BUT the car! Grocery stores, garage sales, church, nurseries, doctor's offices, its rediculous. They are car seats, or to be used on strollers. Even the instructions are specific saying not to keep babies in them for several hours. It's not good for a baby. Babies are meant to be held. Get a convertible seat, then take the money you saved by not having to buy a carrier and then a convertible, too, and use it to buy a sling. Babies LOVE them, you can breastfeed discretely in them, and it keeps your hands free. MeiTei carriers are great, as are ring slings.

travel system vs. separate car seat & stroller?

Kalyy

whats your preference?

Answer
Separate car seat and stroller.

A travel system is a car seat that comes with a particular stroller. The stroller typically is larger than a normal stroller because it has to hold the car seat without tipping. The car seat sits on the stroller, increasing the time that the baby spends in a car seat... and while a car seat is the safest place to ride in a car it decreases oxygen levels for a baby to ride in there long and it's not a recommended sleeping surface. I have never seen a stroller that was easy to maneuver and was lightweight with a travel system... and that's because they HAVE to be sturdy and hard to tip to hold that car seat on them.

I don't have a problem with a baby-bucket/infant car seat, there are situations where they are very useful (extreme weather, mosquitoes and other bugs, very small babies, etc.) Where I live, it gets very cold and we used an infant seat but kept it in the car. You are not allowed to put a baby in a car seat with a coat on, but you can put them in layered thermal outfits. The coat will compress in an accident and the baby could slide right out. With layered clothes though they're warm and it won't compress. I didn't have a problem with putting him in his car seat while it had been sitting out in the cold, but if it was very cold then I warmed the car up before taking him out there. We used a baby carrier (Ergo) and he preferred that over being in a car seat once we got to a place, it was much warmer against mommy than being left in his seat.

But I don't see why you have to have a stroller come with the car seat. Ever.

My favorite combination is for someone to get a moby wrap, ergo, or some other baby carrier that snuggles the baby to them, get the car seat they want and that will fit their car, budget and baby, and then put off the stroller for a few months. At 4-6 months old, the baby can fit in any stroller and sit up so it's not an issue... and mom can get the stroller that suits them for the next few years instead of the stroller that suits the car seat.

Travel System VS Convertible Car Seat?

J. K

This is DH & I baby #1. I'm not very far along with my pregnancy but I feel super overwhelmed at everything that has to be done before baby arrives. So I'm researching early as usual. lol With that being said I've had many friends that have used those traveling systems and said they loved them however when the baby got a little heavier they would complain the entire time carrying it saying it was too heavy and that their shoulders, back, etc. were starting to hurt frequently. So my thought was to get one of those convertible car seats and then buy a stroller with no traveling system but now those same ladies are saying 'no no no you are being silly.' My Mom is with me and says to get a convertible car seat and save the money in the long run.
I just want to know the opinions of others.
And if you used a convertible car seat what did you do with the baby when you went to a restaurant because as of right now thats the only way I think the travel system would be better.
Thanks everyone! :-)

Answer
Skip the travel system. This isn't a popular answer, but it's the truth. Travel systems encourage unsafe use of the car seat.

According to studies done, until babies are 3-6 months old they should be laying flat or being carried upright in someone's arms (or a baby carrier.) When they are put in a car seat, bouncer, stroller with an incline, swing, etc, their oxygen levels dip. The more premature they are the more danger they are in, and if they have any breathing issues the more danger they're in. The recommendation is that car seats are used for travel in cars, not for sitting, riding, being carried in, going in the stroller, being put on shopping carts, as a feeding chair, etc. And most dangerous of all, don't let the baby SLEEP in them. That's also why they are so adamant about a 45degree angle recline in car seats for infants, it helps them breathe. Some of the best strollers for newborns (like the Chicco, it lays fully flat and puts their feet up too so it's like a little bed) come with car seats to hook into them, basically negating the safest way for the baby to ride, and encouraging the parent to leave them in the seat.

Basically when you see a baby riding in an infant seat, sitting in one during dinner in a restaurant, that baby is in danger for the parent's convenience. I never felt comfortable leaving my daughter in a car seat in a restaurant... we actually bought a travel-high chair that reclined very well and used that, or just held her. Oh, the travel-high chair was so much better than a normal one as well. Perfect to take to a friend's house, or to a BBQ, and didn't take up as much room for us to use every day. See the second link, that's basically what we have.

So for safety reasons it's better not to use a travel system.

Add: Never, never, never under any circumstances put a infant carseat on a shopping cart! Not only is it bad for their breathing, it's not how shopping carts are designed and has been consistently warned against doing for years now because of the number of infants injured or killed from having their carseat put on the cart.

Should i buy a normal car seat or a travel system?

McKenzie J

i am a first time mom with not many friends who have had children and i am completely lost in what is the best thing to buy! i know with a travel system the car seat is limited and with a normal car seat it is rear and forward faces which means i can us it longer, what should i buy?

Answer
Well, leaving a baby in an infant baby seat outside of the car is a risk for SIDS. It can tilt their head forward and lower their oxygen levels, also it can curl their back and isn't as good for them. The recommendation is a flat surface, or in your arms (in a baby carrier that emulates that position.) So it's not recommended to put a baby in an infant car seat in a stroller and push them around and let them sleep there. So... what's the point of a travel system if you aren't really supposed to do that? There are strollers that lay flat, or just buy a Moby wrap or nice chest carrier like the Beco. (Like 2 and 3 are places that rent carriers so you can try them out without spending a lot of money and decide what works for you.)

If you have the money, an infant car seat is convenient in some conditions. For instance, in bad weather or very hot weather it's better to have the seat in the house rather than put a baby in a hot seat in the car (unless you take the time to cool the seat using freezer packs or something like I used to.) Also it's nice that they can transfer from one car to another with little problem (my sister left her son to be babysat for instance and his seat stayed with him so we could drive him home later. A convertible seat is more permanent in your car and so harder to do that with.) Also infant seats fit newborns and smaller better than a convertible seat. With my first and second we did use an infant car seat and then moved to a convertible.

Having said that, with my next we're planning on buying a convertible and using that from day one. The Britax seat we're looking at rear-faces to 40lbs and forward to 70lbs, and you have to put an insert in for a newborn to fit snugly, but they're not cheap ($230-300.) The Cosco Scenara is available only at Wal-mart and rear-faces to 40lbs (forward to 50lbs) and runs $39. Then there's seats everywhere inbetween. For me, I like the fact that because it's going to 70lbs it will last us probably until the seat expires in 6-7 years, and I like the new technology Britax has for forward facing children to limit head movement, but there are MANY great seats.

Just make sure you get a longer rear-facing weight and height limit so that you keep them rearfacing at least to 2 years old (it's 5x safer.) That means if you DO get an infant seat that goes to 22lbs (normal weight) then you'll probably have to buy a convertible in a year anyway. If you buy an infant seat that goes to 30-35lbs (Chicco, Graco Snugride 30 and 35, etc) then it may last you for 2 years but I've never known a baby who liked to lay back in the recline needed for a newborn seat once they can sit up so you'd probably want to buy a convertible in a year anyway.

Add: Just for fun, the fourth link is talking about the G3 Britax line that will come out in July, but at the bottom it talks about how in July, if you are wanting to buy the stroller they have out you can get one of their car seats for free. It's a $500 stroller (not in my price range) but if you were looking at travel systems, it would be a travel system (again, not what I'd recommend, still, sort of fun to find a sale to share.) Rather than a seat you can always get the 'bassinet seat' for free instead, which would make the stroller into a nice little bed/bassinet (which you could use around the house as a bassinet if you don't already have one as well as a stroller.)

Travel system versus convertible car seat?

doglover

I am 25 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and I'm trying to decide whether to register for the travel system stroller/carseat combo or a convertible carseat that can be used longer and a separate stroller...is the convenience of the travel system really worth it? Help moms!

Answer
Being a mom is going to change your world. Whatever you decide, you should be able to use again and again, if you decide to have more kids.

I would choose the Travel System and have the convenience in the short run until your baby outgrows them, you can always upgrade at a later time. If if your baby outgrows the carseat that comes with the TravelSystem, you should still be able to use the stroller. Some do double duty and you make a double stroller out of the travel system.

Congrats on your new baby.

Can you put the Graco Travel System car seat in the stroller, without the base?

I am looking at the Graco Travel System for my upcoming baby, it's the stroller and car seat combo where the car seat comes with a base that can stay in the car so you can take the carrier part out without unbuckling and awakening your baby. I'm wondering if the base is needed to lock the car seat into the stroller, or if the base is only for the car?

Answer
The base if for the car only. The car seat will fit into the stroller securely with out it :) Congrats on the baby!

How long did your baby stay in a 22 pound limit car seat?

;-)

Hi everyone,

I am having a baby boy in 10 weeks, and I just got his travel system. The car seat limit is 22 pounds and 29 inches. I want him to stay in the car seat for as long as possible. How long did your baby stay in a 22 pound car seat?

Thanks : )

Answer
My daughter was over a year, but I thought she was looking scrunched so I switched to a convertible at that time. She's very small though.

If I had a choice now, I'd go with something like the Graco-65 that goes backwards from 5-40lbs. It's what we plan on with our next baby.

How much did your baby weight before you stop using your travel system car seat? Also how old.?

Well my son is 8 months old he is small for his age. My guess is he now about 19 lbs. I plan on keeping him in his travel system car seat until age 1. Unless he starts to look uncomfortable in it.

Answer
That sounds like a good plan...

The car seat from the travel system will say on the sticker on it the height/weight combo that it is good until...

As for how much our baby weighed, I can't remember, I think she 'heighted' out of it first, though.

As for age, our baby was so much TALLER than others for her age...got to say I don't think age matters at all, it is more about meeting the height and weight requirement and all children achieve that at different ages so it is more about your individual baby's growth that matters. But that said, if memory serves it was right around a year, I believe.

What is better to purchase - a travel system, or a separate car seat and stroller?

LP

This is our first baby, but we plan on having more in the next few years. I'm trying to decide whether I should by a travel system or just buy a separate car seat and a lighter-weight stroller. What are the pros and cons?

Answer
I have to disagree with most on the answeres..sorry guys. I registered for the travel system and loved it , but it didn't last long. The stroller is very bulky and didn't fit in my trunk (mid-size sedan) , the carseat is also very small. My daughter is 3 1/2 months and barely fits in the infant carrier anymore. I went to Babies r' us the other day to look for a new stroller that folds up more compact and spoke to 3 different mothers and they all agreed. Yesterday I went and bought the Peg Perego stroller which is good from infancy through toddler , and I switched to a convertible carseat , also good until around 4 years of age.

The pros of a travel system are that is it way more convenient to transport the baby in and out of the car while still in the carseat.

The con is that once your baby hits around 15 lbs. the carrier can get very heavy to carry around. Also the strollers tend to be a little bulkier.

The pros of buying separate is that the carseat will last for years , and you have a wider variety of stroller to pick from , lightweight and compact , or a more expensive trendy one.

The cons of buying separate are that you have to physically take the baby in and out of the carseat , which can get annoying if you have a light sleeper.

Good Luck!

buybuybaby.com has a great selection of strollers!
