what is the best stroller or travel system?

Q. new baby on the way and i am researching strollers, car seats, and pack n plays. what are the best out there?

Answer
Travel systems are bulky and unnecessary. When kept in a car seat a baby can have trouble breathing, and sleeping in the car seat is even worse. So I'm going to talk 'types' rather than brands.

CARSEAT: the current recommendation is to keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible, at least to 2 years old. Look at the first link for information about why rear-facing is so important. There are infant seats that rear-face to 20lbs, and some that rear-face to 30-35lbs. There are also the option of convertible car seats which can go from 5lbs-45lbs (depending on the brand) rear-facing and then forward to as high as 85lbs. The cheapest convertible that goes to 40lbs rear-facing but then is quickly outgrown is the Cosco Scenara available at Wal-mart for $40 (including shipping.) The point being that you want a seat that will rear-face a long time, or if you want to use an infant seat to plan on a rear-facing seat when the baby outgrows the baby seat. I do like the Graco-Snugride 35, which rear-faces to 35lbs, but I've found most babies want to sit up more by 10-12 months and it might be wiser to either get a convertible or get a cheap infant seat and replace it once they're large enough to want a new one.

STROLLERS:
First, for a newborn you want the baby to be able to lay flat (sitting up can decrease oxygen levels.) Also, there is research about babies who face their parents developing better than babies who are faced out towards the public. So, if you can find a stroller that lays flat and faces you then that's what you want. However, it's rather hard to find that, and I personally find that it's easier to get a baby wearing sling (like the Ergo or Moby Wrap) and wear the baby the first 6 months. After that they typically can sit up and it's easier to find a stroller that works for them. Strollers are rarely recalled so you can try them out in the store and then watch to see if someone sells it on craigslist or something. When you try them out try going over different obstacles, larger wheels tend to handle things like sand and obstacles better, but if you're using it for shopping then you want to try weaving in and out of tight corners. If you're using it on parks and trails then you want a different stroller than if you're riding the bus with your baby every day. It's all about where you live and what you're using it for.

Pack n Plays:
Wait on this one. See the second link. As of this year, pack-n-plays FINALLY have a safety standard, and as of last month they have adopted a safety standard for the bassinet attachment (before then they didn't.) There are a lot of deaths from pack-n-plays not working right, and they are not a good place to leave your baby to sleep. With these standards there are exciting changes that probably will happen in just the next year... but it also means there may be a lot of recalls and discontinuing of unsafe pack-n-plays. Also, Disney has just released the first ever machine washable pack-n-play (that's right... before this they were not washable. We can all gross out now.) See third link. To me, that means that the play-yards in the next year or two not only are going to be safer, but they're going to start to be washable! It is NOT worth it to buy a play-yard right now, you'll only regret it in a couple of years when they're better.

BABY CARRIERS:
When I say this I am talking about a chest-carrier, like the Moby Wrap or the Ergo. However there are some like the Baby Bjorn where the baby is dangling from their crotch, and this can contribute to hip dysplasia. The fourth link explains what you want to look for in a wrap, carrier, or sling (or even how to make sure they sit in a car seat.) There are several carriers on the market that hold the baby right, I do personally like the Ergo because it goes from newborn to 40lbs and allows a chest, hip, or back position, the versatility has been something that keeps us using it year after year.

Best Travel System for Baby?

hanna

Which travel system do you recommend? Do you like the one you have? Why, why not? Thank you.

I looked at Target, Walmart, Babies R Us, and Baby Depot (Burington Coat Factory) and this is the only one I found that I liked. Bad thing was that I had to buy it online, it wasn't in the Babies R Us store that I'm by, so instead of it being $160, it was $200 with shipping and handling. But it came very fast, it was expected 7-10 business days, got it in 5 business days.

It is very good quality-the fabric is definitely not cheap looking. The infant car seat shade is kind of small (short), but oh well. The stroller is bulky, but I think I would get that with any travel system. They are big units.

I highly suggest it.

Does anyone know what the best baby stroller travel system is?

Answer
I WORK AT BABIES R US AND WE HAD TO GO THRU A TRAINING ON STROLLERS AND THESES ARE THE ONES THAT I RECOMMEND:
The Graco Quattro Tour Deluxe travel system includes the Quattro Tour Deluxe stroller, SafeSeat⢠infant car seat with a 5-Point front adjust harness and a stay-in-car adjustable base. The Quattro Tour Deluxe stroller is made of aluminum tubing and promises years of comfy strolling for infants through toddlers. The one hand gravity fold simplifies life for parents and the 180 degree rotating canopy with peek-a-boo window shades your child from any direction. The 4-position, flat reclining seat keeps your child comfortable while the parent organizer tray with storage compartment and cupholders provides convenience for mom and dad. The lower and load storage basket is the perfect place for storing babys essentials. Best of all, this travel system includes the SafeSeat infant car seat for your infant from 5-30 lbs. and up to 32.

How old should my baby be to put in the shopping cart seat?

My baby is not born yet she is due February 26. The thing is I bought a Chicco Cortina traveling system for her. It's the infant car seat and the stroller. I heard it was the best and safest so i bought it. I read a lot of reviews saying the carrier does not fit in the shopping cart where you would sit your baby. So I will have to put her in the big part which I won't be able to put a lot of groceries in there. So I can manage for a while but, when do you think she will be able to sit in the seat? I would like to by a comfy seat thing for her and put her in there as soon as she is able to sit up by her self. I was think 5 months? What's the average age thanks.
Sorry for some weird sentences I got mixed up!

Answer
It's not that the car seat doesn't fit, it's that the shopping cart is not made for car seats, and by putting a car seat on the top of the shopping cart the whole thing becomes unstable and can tip over. This has been a problem for decades, but idiot mothers continued to put the car seat on top, and babies continued to be injured. This is why the shopping carts have infant seats attached for moms who want that, but why the car seats should not be used. You can use the reclined infant seats that are bolted to the shopping carts from day one as far as I'm aware, just put a blanket down first.

The toddler seats you should use when your baby can sit up and at your own discretion. They continue to say that shopping carts are not the safest place for your baby to ride and that if you have a stroller or can wear your baby then that's better/safer.

Leaving your baby in the car seat while you shop leaves your baby in a curved position that interferes with oxygen levels in the blood. There's really no reason to do it. They're heavy and if you drop the car seat you may damage it, not to mention hurting your baby.

I would suggest looking into a baby-carrier. With my first I hauled the infant seat in and out of stores and it was miserable, for her, for us, and for anyone who walked by us who might get bumped by that seat. It was awful. We had backaches and were in pain. When she was old enough to sit in the cart, then I was having to spray the cart with cleaners and use sheets and stuff to try and block the cart from her because H1N1 was going around and she was only a year old about. With my second I bought an Ergo baby carrier. We left the infant seat in the car and carried him in the Ergo when we'd go into places. He LOVED it. He'd snuggle in and go to sleep, I had my arms and hands free for shopping, he was safe and sound and I could kiss him anytime I wanted as well as talk to him face-to-face (which is great for development.) I didn't have to worry about the germs of the cart getting him. Much better. I used that well into his second year, he just loved it better than the cart and I didn't have to worry about it.

Do your parents have a pushchair at their house for when the kids visit?

Joey

This is just something I'm wondering about...

I don't drive, so I plan to get a good quality pram/pushchair for my baby, and just a car seat for when we go in a taxi or whatever. I don't need it to fold down tiny to fit in the boot or store in the house, because it will be in use every single day.

However, my mother DOES drive and will be wanting to spend weekends and days off with the baby, so should she get herself a lightweight, easy fold small travel system to save dragging my pushchair across town?

I think it would also make it easier for when we all go out together, as her car boot is TEENY.

What do you think? What set up do your family have?

Answer
my parents have 26 grand children, and while none of us live very near them, with so many of us, they have grandchildren visiting several times a year. Over the years various of my siblings have bought them a stroller, a highchair, a playpen, and a car seat, just so they could have one while they were visiting, and now we all get to take advantage of that when we go visit. My parents didn't buy any of those though. It is handy having a stroller there. My in-laws don't have any baby items so it does make it a little difficult when we go visit them.

Is there any where you can buy Graco Travel Systems that are no longer sold in stores?

I'm looking for one of Graco's older travel systems. I wanted it when I had my daughter but we ended up getting a different pattern than what I wanted. Now that I'm pregnant with our second baby I would really like to find this travel system, we already have the stroller and the playpen that match it. Is there any where you can go online to buy the older Graco patterns?
The pattern name is Meridian.

Answer
try craigslist.org.
you can look at ad's and see if you find it or you can post an ad asking if anyone has it.

How does a "Travel System" work exactly?

Andy

Registering and people said to register for a travel system instead of a car seat and stroller separately so they'll match and it'll be cheaper. How is it different? Can I use the stroller without the car seat? Or is it just a base to attach onto it? Which is a better thing to register separately or together?

Answer
It's a stroller for smaller or older babies that is convenient because the car seat fits into the stroller so you don't have to wake up the baby. Yes you can use the stroller without the car seat.

This is very important though: Don't register for your main gear based on how they look or online reviews. *Go test them out!* Make sure you feel comfortable using the stuff, and folding it up with one hand. Pretend you're holding a wriggling 5 month old in your arm, and you have to fold up the stroller and put it in your trunk without putting the baby down. Hang your purse and a heavy bag (such as a full diaper bag) on the back and make sure it's not tipping over for safety reasons. Drive it around the store, between the clothing racks, so you can see how hard or easy it is to maneuver in tight spaces..
