Best Infant Car Seat/Travel System?

Q. Hi,we are expecting our first child and need help on infant car seats. We are either going to get a full travel system or a bugaboo cameleon stroller and just an infant car seat. So if you could please suggest infant car seats and/or travel systems that would be great! Thanks so much!

Answer
I got the Chicco Keyfit 30 Travel System for my son. It's a little pricey, but it was rated the safest car seat of 2011 by Consumer Reports. I haven't had any problems with it and I felt so relieved as a new mom as well to know my baby was in the safest car seat for the year. Definitely look into it and see if you guys would like it. Good luck with your search!! And congrats on the baby. :)

A good tandem travel system?

Q. I'm looking for a good tandem (double) travel system stroller....one that i can snap a car seat onto it but can also b used when the child is able to sit up...like a regular stroller...the brand doesn't matter...right now i'm using an eddie bauer system and will need to upgrade come july 2011

Answer
What exactly are you looking for? Something for twins or something for an older child and a newborn?

Add: Judging from your other questions, I'm assuming you are pregnant and have your 3 month old.

Honestly? It's unhealthy to put a baby in a baby carrier in a car seat because they should only be in the car seat as little as possible. It sits them at an angle that isn't good for breathing as well as curves them so that their digestion isn't as good. So until the newborn is 4months old or so, you really don't need to worry about a replacement.

For me, I decided to use a baby chest carrier (the Ergo) for the newborn and the stroller for my 2 year old. This is SO much easier (and safer) than when I used a baby seat in the stroller for my first. It also gives you more time and more options as far as double-strollers go. You can look at a doublestroller that doesn't lay completely flat instead of having to find one that lays flat.

However if you really want a double-stroller or need it because of your back or what have you, then the Chicco Together is one of the best I've seen. It has a fully reclining back seat and is the one I'd get if I was to get one.

Baby stroller with rubber wheels?

Q. I'm expecting a baby in November and am currently looking around for a stroller. My husband is set on one with RUBBER wheels. I tell him this is not necessary but he insists. Where could we find such a stroller? We want a travel system and aren't looking to spend much over $200.

Answer
Hi

From a quick peek I saw some very nice strollers bellow 200$

http://babysupply.info/price_Baby+Travel-Strollers-1-15-580-2.html

This site allow you to set the prices limit according to certain categories.

In this list you can find a "2006 Combi City Savvy Stroller" which wheels seems to be made from rubber

Question about Evenflo Travel System Strollers vs Jogging Stroller?

Q. I have a Evenflo Eurotrek Travel System and was wondering if anyone has tried an Evenflo stroller on gravel and how did it perform? My boys are fixing to start baseball again and I'm wondering if a jogging type stroller with big wheels will be necessary as I plan on taking my 4 month old with me to practices and games as long as the weather permits in her stroller. Some of the ballparks are gravel and I was wondering if anyone has any advice.

Answer
Travel systems are way to bulky! I got the Citi Mini by Babyjogger. Its a 3 wheel stroller with bigger wheels and yet it is not a jogging stroller. Its meant for everyday use on concrete and gravel terrain. Its also pretty lightweight and collapses in half by simply pulling on the handle located on the seat. You can literally collapse it with 1 finger while holding the baby! I think this is the most awesome stroller and its fairly well priced at $219.99

CHICCO, BRITAX or Graco baby travel systems!!!!?

Q. I am looking for the best all around safe but practical baby stroller with infant car seat....i know the CHICCO is top rated and #1.....has anyone used either of these brands and which models?? What r ur opinions and comments?? I need ur help ladies!!!! I like the CHICCO cortina and BRITAX b agile but not sure which would be best.

Answer
Leaving a baby in a car seat to let them sleep or to let them ride in a stroller is not a recommended sleep position. The tilt and the curve of the seat decreases the oxygen level in their blood. For a newborn, you want to use a pram-type or flat surface, full recline basically. Or you can use a baby chest carrier (like a moby wrap or ergo) until they hit about 4-6 months when they sit up and then it doesn't matter.

So, the B-Agile Britax stroller does not fully recline. Which is stupid because they make plenty of fully reclining strollers in other countries and have a pram attachment even for their other stroller (which is ridiculously expensive.) The car seat is a good one, and I like the anti-roll bar on the seat, and also goes down to 4lbs for preemie use. But with the stroller you'd want to wait using it until baby is a bit older. The wheels, from my experience, are nice and very maneuverable and I do like the design, but not for a newborn.

The Chicco Stroller lays fully flat even without the car seat in it. The car seat is also a good one, some go down to 4lbs for preemie size, and are a highly rated design. When I was looking for an infant seat I was torn between the Chicco Key-fit 30 and the Graco Snugride 35, they were (from what I could see) the best at the time. The wheels on the stroller are fairly standard size though, and it's a bit harder to push (it's bulkier than the Britax design, so that's to be expected.)

The Graco Travel systems tend to be awfully bulky and annoying from my experience, however there are some Graco strollers that I think look very promising but I haven't tried out yet. The Graco Snugride 35 is a great car seat from my experience, I loved being able to adjust the incline without having to try and move the seat around, just rotate the dial. It goes down to 4lbs as well. My Graco Snugride 35 went through my son, then I handed it to my sister who could not afford a seat and it went through her son (she's far less careful with car seats), and she's handing it down to my niece. It still looks in very good condition, so I'm pleased with how it's held up. I cannot say the same for the basic Snugride that I got with my daughter. That one not only got recalled but the padding and everything wasn't that comfortable and after a year of use it just didn't look good at all. The stroller that I got with my basic Snugride had small wheels, was bulky, hard to do anything with, and took up the entire backseat of our car. It was AWFUL. Again, it eventually got recalled.

But the Graco Strollers today have a wider variety. The Fast Action fold Graco lays flat. The Quatro Tour lay flat, Styllus LX, they even have a 3 wheeler now that lays flat, the Trekko. These all come with the Snugride 30, which I wasn't as impressed with, but is still going to be a good seat. The Graco snugride also goes to 40lbs now, but the problem I ran into with my Snugride 35 is that after about 10 months old my son wanted to sit up more and when we switched him to a convertible that allowed that he stopped crying. My nephew right now (my sister is still using the seat) screams when he rides in her car seat with her... but when he rode in my car just twice all complaints stopped and he is an angel in the car (she doesn't believe me, but he is.) That recline is great for babies, but once they hit about 10 months it seems they want to sit up.

If it was me, I would not get a travel system. I'd look at the different seats and try picking them up and carrying them and putting a doll in and out of them, then decide what works with my family. I would not stress the weights, though I would probably get one that goes to 4lbs just 'in case'. Then I'd look at different strollers, some of the ones that Graco has released really interest me with the bigger wheels and lay flat abilities. However, with my son I tried carrying my son in an Ergo and he didn't want out until well over a year old, meaning the lay flat would be more of an option. Consider what you'll use the stroller for; walking in parks, off-road areas, just shopping malls and zoos, up and down stairs and buses? Different wheels work best for different uses. Lighter is always nicer it seems. And see how small it folds up because you don't want it taking up a seat in your car.

What kind of travel system should I purchase?

babs

I am mainly interested in purchasing a Graco travel system for my baby due next month. I found the Graco website a bit overwhelming and the customer service representative not too helpful. I would like the stroller with the removable car seat. Does anyone recommend one over the other. The only information I really found out was the Snug Ride goes up to 22lbs and the Sung Ride 32 goes up to 32 lbs. Unfortunately some of the patterns I like don't come on the strollers I necessary like. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I don't like the big strollers that come with travel systems so what i did was I got a Snugride32 carseat, so then the baby will be more likely to fit in it till he's a year old. And then I got the snugrider infant carseat frame. Its just a stroller that just the carseat clicks into...any graco seat fits. It folds up a ton smaller and it super light.

As for the carseat I absolutely love it. its a little bit heavier then the plain snugride but I love it. It feels a lot safer and I feel better about that. And I love the pattern, I got it in the lemongrass design and I love it... hope this helps!

Did you find your travel system useful?

With Child

I was reading blogs yesterday and came across one that was about things that you won't need with a baby. The list had things like wipe warmers and other things that I understand are a little much... But also, it said that a travel system wasn't necessary. I found this a bit odd and already have my travel system but I just want to get other opinions from moms who have already had their children. Do you use your travel system or would you rather just carry your child everywhere? That's what the blog said that they just carry their child everywhere and have an umbrella stroller for when they are older. What do you think of this? Accurate or not?
I have horrible back problems and there's no way that I could carry my infant everywhere I go... Just btw.

Answer
We use it everyday for walks.. and my son is barely 4 wks old. I think it's safe to say that a travel system is useful.

I couldn't imagine unbuckling my kid everytime I wanted to take him out of the car. Especially since he still seems so fragile.

baby elegance beep travel system?

Kimberley

just wondering if anyone has this buggy adn what do you htink i had decided on the mychoice 4 but now i thinkin i love the beep!! my bf isnt too keen on it..id be happy to change his mind :)

Answer
Hi The Beep Plus is a great package as you get a hi-tech buggy with all the other items for a lot less than a Quinny. The carrycot is from the birth and the buggy is suitable from 6 months.

The sister product is the Ego which looks similar but has 4 wheels, so the buggy is suitable from birth.

If you happen to be in our area we would bring you one to see, but the web is a big place so its unlikley.

Both systems are great value from a long established Irish manufacturer.

We have deals on both at the moment and would be happy to answer any question on the phone or via email.

If you like iCandy but want to hang on to your £1k then have a look at our I'COO's, sturdy, shiny and eye catching. They are not cheap but are also good value.

Best wishes

Best stroller/ baby travel system out there?

Mrs. Troy

I am due in July with my first baby, and I am having second thoughts about the stroller that I picked out. I picked out a Graco Stylus Travel System. The car seat holds up to 35lbs, and the stroller holds up to 50 lbs. I have read all of the reviews, and the only thing I am kind of worried about is how heavy people say that it is. Not pregnant, I am not a big person, only weighing in at about 120 (pre-pregnancy) and I'm only 5'2".

Do any of you all have any suggestions on a really good baby travel system? You can see the travel system that I picked out originally if click on the link below :).

I am having a baby girl by the way, but I would like to keep the stroller somewhat sex neutral just in case I end up having any more children.

Your input is greatly appreciated :)

Answer
There are a lot of things you can easily pick out by looking online. However, some things just need a first hand look. I think baby equipment is one of those things. It's helpful to see things in person before deciding on things like strollers, car seats, cribs, and travel systems. I suggest you go to several stores such as Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Target, Walmart, Sears, JC Penney, or any other local stores that carry baby items. Take some time to push the strollers and practice folding them. See first hand how heavy they are and how much room they take up when folded. Feel the fabric on car seats and check out how the latching system works. Sometimes looks alone just can't give you a good idea as to what you are going to get. After you find the items you like best than you can do some research to find the best web site to get the best price deal on exactly what you want. Personally, I don't think there is a best or really good travel system only because each one has their own set of pros and cons depending on what your wants and needs are. All are going to meet minimum safety standards, so it will take some investigation to find the one that suits you best.

I love the Graco travel system. The car seats are high quality and the stroller is high quality and easy to use. They have a button on the handlebar that you push, twist and the whole thing folds in one easy motion.

baby traveling?

BedTymeBea

when is a newborn old enough to travel by plane?

Answer
As long as your child has had a check-up with the doctor and everything is fine, your child will be safe to fly almost immediately. Some airlines will only take them once they are 2 weeks old, some will take them as young as 24-48 hours old. Check with your specific airline though to confirm.

If he/she has even a slight cold, the pressure in his/her ears during take-off and landing (even if you do the precaution methods) could leave his ears aching for days after the flight.

Most doctors recommend that if anyone is sick (such as being stuffed up or already having an earache), not to take the flight because of the potential damage to the ears. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if they are sick because of this danger.

I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5). Here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me and I hope will help you:

1.) You will need to have all your baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of his/her notarized birth certificate with you. If it is an international flight you will need a passport and possibly a visa for your child as well. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

FAA regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly free of charge as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat).

The Flight Attendants should place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Depending on the airline and length of flight, the Flight Attendants might give you a bassinet that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device.

2.) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help your child sleep, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit.

A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use.

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

3.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing you can do to help with the ear popping, is if your child is nursing, nurse him/her. If he/she is not nursing, give your child a bottle to drink (formula, water, (juice for older babies)- it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard (as long as your child is with you), do not worry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food onto the plane with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

Another trick is that if your child is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to nurse or drink, gently rub his/her neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

4.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your child, such as comfort things such as books and a few toys, and one or two comfort things, such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal.

5.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case he/she gets sick, spills something on him/herself, or in case your luggage gets lost.

6.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Baby nail clippers and scissors are not allowed though. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use.

You should be respectful of other passengers and always change your child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small.

7.) Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

8.) Bring any medications that you might need for your child should he/she get sick or that he/she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making him/her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

9.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.

i have a 3 month old son and i'm using the chicco cortina stroller
http://www.chiccousa.com/gear/travel-systems/cortina-30lb-systems/travel-systems-30-adventure.aspx

Answer
My baby is 1 year and still using the cortina travel system. The car seat can be used until they are 30 pounds but some babies didn't like it.
Anyway the AAP recommend that babies should travel backwards at least until they are 12 months old AND 20 pounds, but if you can keep them them facing back the longer the better.

Any advice? good/bad.... Any suggestions or experiences are appreciated.

We registered for the Eddie Bauer® Adventurer Travel System - Cambridge, but I read some reviews and many people have not given favorable reviews. PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer
Go to Babies R Us and test drive strollers.. We got ours as a gift a Graco Travel system.. The infant car seat was nice, but we didn't use the stroller very much.. Then when we had another baby two yrs. later we ended up buying a tandem stroller with a standing/sitting jump seat.. Joovy ! I love it.. Becasue it folds nearly flat and weights quite a bit less than our Graco. The infant seat adapter comes with it! I would suggest maybe buying a used or borrowing a Graco travel system if you can.. They are nice, but really heavy and take up a ton of room and they are a pain to fold... If it were me and I was looking for a stroller I would opt for getting a car seat that was for 5lbs-40lbs or 80 lbs and getting a regular lightweight stroller... Especially if you have more than 1 vehicle if you wanted a base for each car atleast for the graco strollers it's an extra $40... However, I got one at a garage sale for $10.. It's all dependant really on how much you want to spend and how much you are going to use it.... Look at ebay or Craigslist and see if you can get one used.. I'm selling ours with an extra infant seat/base for $70. The Graco's atleast retail for $170 for the travel system.... Good luck

Why did you want to pull the plug on baby Joseph?
I know you well want to clear all this up as our site were alive with you Canucks telling us of your free and better health care

Answer
While I don't claim that the Canadian Health Care system is perfect, I do believe it is better than the American system. That said, even if Canada had a similar health care system as the U.S, there would still be people that crossed the boarder. For different reasons.

Large American cities are sometimes closer than large Canadian cities. Cities such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, are few and far between. So it's sometimes its faster to go to an American city. An example is Windsor, which is about 5h from Toronto, but just across the bridge from Detroit. Large cities, also, develop expertise in certain fields. Such as Oncology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Cardiology, and so on. Again, Canada has has only 3 major cities, where as the U.S has many.

Just because a few Canadian go to the U.S for health care, doesn't makes the American system better. It's just a red herring. There is a growing amount of Americans traveling to third world countries, like India, to get treatment. Does that mean that India has better health care?

As for baby Joseph. I want to know what you think of the following article.

http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2011/03/22/17708861.html

Can my Canadian partner apply for another visa during her 2 year Tier 5 Youth Mobility scheme visa?

Q. My partner is a Canadian citizen who has been in the UK on a tier 5 youth mobility scheme since April 2009. We have been together for around 3 years and we spent the first year traveling back and forth from Canada & Scotland to be together (I am a UK citizen). We have recently fallen pregnant together and we are planning on getting married in January 2011, with the baby being due around May. My partners visa runs out April 2011 (1 month before our due date) and we are wondering if anyone can give us any ideas about her staying in the UK to have the baby.

The youth mobility scheme doesnt seem to offer too much options from what I have read on the government websites so we are wondering if anyone out there has been in the same situation or if anyone else has a better knowledge than us.

We would be grateful if you could give us any guidance from the above information and let us know what our options are about my partner remaining in the UK after April 2009. Can we apply to have her visa status changed? Is she entitled by law to remain here to have the baby as I am a UK citizen? Any information/guidance anyone can give us will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Thanks for your answer Ozmaniac.

We are both older than 21 so that shouldn't cause a problem.

As the father of the child and myself being a UK citizen, why on earth would the person who is carrying my baby not be allowed to have the birth in th UK. Basically the government are telling me that I dont have any rights have the birth of my child in my homeland. Does that seem right? It seems very very steep to me.

This is one of the many reasons I have been thinking about leaving this country, never to return.

Answer
The YMS section of the UKBA website states:
"While you are in the United Kingdom under the youth mobility scheme, you are not allowed to switch into any other category of the points-based system or in to a visitor route."
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier5/youthmobilityscheme/eligibility/whocanapply/

Applying for permission to remain as the partner of a British citizen is neither on the points-based system nor is it a visitor route so after your marriage, there is nothing in the YMS restrictions to stop her applying to remain as your partner if all other requirements are met. You must both be over 21.
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/partnersandfamilies/partners/husbandswivescivilpartners/

Because your partner is subject to immigration control, she will probably need to apply for a Certificate of Approval to marry. The procedure and any grounds for exemption from the requirement are detailed on the following:
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/while-in-uk/marriageandcivilpartnership/

She has no entitlement to stay in the UK just because she is having a child with a British citizen and I can't see any other way for her to stay if she is under 21 and therefore ineligible to stay as your partner.

EDIT:
I know it's difficult to accept, but every country has the right to control as far as possible, who stays in that country and they do that by the issuing of visas to enable them to stay legally. If they simply allowed people who were part of a couple that was expecting a child to stay purely on that basis with little or no evidence of commitment to the relationship, the floodgates would open and every second student and visitor would be doing it. I know that Australia, Canada, the USA wouldn't allow her to stay unless she qualified for a spouse/partner visa and don't know of any other developed country that would be any different.

You intend marrying in January and your partner's visa doesn't expire until April so sorry, but I really can't see any problem. Just have her apply to stay on the basis of her marriage to a British citizen and she
will not only be able to stay for the birth but for as long as she wishes after that and, if I understand correctly the way things work in the UK, she'll even be able to have the NHS pick up the tab for the last stages of the pregnancy and the birth. Have I missed something?

EDIT:
My apologies for confusing the issue further, but it has just been pointed out to me (by Maggie, arguably the most knowledgeable authority on UK immigration on Answers), that elsewhere on the UKBA site, it states "there is no right to apply to live permanently in the United Kingdom (known as 'settlement' or 'indefinite leave to remain') if you are here under the youth mobility scheme under tier 5 of the points-based system.
You cannot apply for settlement from tier 5 and the time you spend in any tier 5 category will not count towards any settlement you may apply for in the future."
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier5/youthmobilityscheme/settlement/

I believe that the statement above is very ambiguous because applying for limited leave to remain for a spouse is not applying for settlement, but I confess that I'm no longer sure that your partner will be able to stay on as I suggested above. I think you need professional advice. Start with the UKBA, but be prepared to pay for advice from an immigration lawyer or agent.

Good luck to both (all!) of you - hope it all works out without too many problems.

Im looking to get a baby stroller thats a jogger with a baby car seat to be inserted!?

Unique<3as

Can anyone recommend any brands or stores in canada that might have?? I just want 1 stroller thats why it must come with a baby car seat or be able to attach a baby car seat cuz my baby isnt due till aug.1.10.

Thank you kindly
btw i know i cannot jog with the baby till its almost 1y old, and its ok, i just am lookinf for one stroller that will be perfect for me and a jogger with baby car seat is the one :)

Answer
Hi - there are a bunch!

My favorites are the BOB Jogger and the Baby Jogger City Series - they both take car seats using the additional car seat adapter. I believe they all work with graco car seats - a handful work with peg perego and chicco.

You could also plan ahead - if you think you might have more kids in the future, look into the Phil & ted strollers - you can use them with a car seat now - and later they turn into a double. Baby Jogger has a similar stroller also that turns into a double.

Now - if you think you are going to seriously job - then I can only really recommend the B.O.B. Revolution - it is really the only true jogging stroller that I would feel comfortable putting many miles on jogging with. The others are more like SUV type strollers.

If you want a cheaper option - and one that is sold as a "travel system" - then get this one - http://www.albeebaby.com/baby-trend-jogger-travel-system-9139ct.html

One last note - you could always just buy any jogging stroller you like, and simply get a snap & go for the first few months that you want to be able to use the car seat in a stroller...

Travel Systems vs. Separate Stroller and Car Seat?

This is N

A friend of mine is having her first baby in September. I volunteered and said I would take care of the stroller and car seat. I originally thought I would just get her a travel system. Then I thought everytime she wants to take the baby somewhere she's going to have to take the carseat out and put it in the stroller everytime...which will become a hassle quickly. Then I started reading travel systems are dangerous. I want the baby to be safe but it will be more than I can afford to get good high quality seperate stroller and car seat. Also I don't want the baby to grow out of the carseat in 6 months...if that is inevitable though let me know. I need advice on what to get. Give me links too of products you reccomend.

Answer
I had a travel system. You are able to use the stroller without the carseat. My daughter is 3 and sometimes we still use the stroller. Also, the base of the carseat not only buckled into my car but had 2 metal clips that buckled into the base of my car's back seat. so it was VERY safe. Also, the carseat was up to 40 lbs. so she didnt need a new one until she was a year old and could face forward anyway. Id say Travel system cause you can use them seperately, its generally cheaper and they do match!

First time expecting mom seeking advice on infant car seat and strollers vs travel systems etc?!?

kjfdhgks

Hello
I am a first time expecting mother and am pretty confused on all the baby gear options. I've ruled out that, although a convertible car seat saves money and stuff, that I do want to go with an infant car seat so that I don't have to wake the baby every time we get out of the car...Maybe? lol Im also torn between using a travel system or just getting an infant car seat and a light weight stroller. I do plan on getting the baby Bjorn as well. Im only 4'10 and I have concerns with a travel system being too bulky and heavy. I also want to make sure Im going to get use out of it. I would love opinions from experienced mothers on what worked for you or even expecting parents and what your planning on doing. This is all so confusing and overwhelming as a first time mother because im not really sure what will work and all. Thanks=]

Answer
Definitely 100% get a travel system. We got one and it's made life much easier. The carseat snaps right into the stroller when they're little so you don't have to move them out of it and into a stroller. They make lots of lightweight ones- if you look on the internet at some, just check the weight- it will say how much in the description.

We had a baby bjorn too but only used it maybe 5 times. Barely ever used the bumbo either- both were waste of money in our case.

travel system or baby carrier?

Omari's Yu

I have both, but which do you think is best or the one that I should use the most? My baby isn't here yet (I'm 26 wks), but I'm trying to figure out which should I use the most when taking walks, shopping, etc. Which would be easiest and why? Thanks!

Answer
It will depend partly on what's comfortable for you and your baby.

With baby #1, I didn't know about slings, and she didn't like the Snugli carrier we had, so I used the travel system a lot. The infant carseat was definitely convenient for the times that she fell asleep in the carseat because I could move her in/out of the car without waking her. The biggest problem is how quickly they outgrow that infant seat.

With babies #2 and #3, I used a sling most of the time. With baby #2, I loved my ring and pouch slings. With baby #3, I almost exclusively used my Mei Tai carrier -- probably 1-3 hours a day from the time he was born until he was almost a year old. We took walks, I went grocery shopping, I could cook dinner, etc. all while he rode (and often napped) on my chest or back.

I will say that the stroller is very convient for things like trips to the mall where you'll be buying things and need a place to push them. There were times that I took the stroller even though I knew my kids would mostly ride in the sling b/c it gave me a place to put their stuff.

If you have a good sling/carrier, start using it right from the beginning to get baby used to it. Then, you can figure out what works best for you on a case by case basis. Good luck with your new little one!

Target Baby Registry!?

Ree

I've just signed up for my first registry at Target and I have not one single clue where to begin. I've never even held a baby, let alone know what all they need :)

A little help, mommies?
I'm having a baby boy!

Answer
Baby room furniture if you don't have it yet.

Stroller and carseat or travel system

High chair

Booster seat

Breast pump/storage bags/bottles

Boppy

Receiving blankets

Baby swing

Bouncy seat

LOTS of diapers

Baby wipes

Wipe warmer, if you want it

Baby bath tub

Baby essentials - shampoo, lotion

Baby grooming kit with nail clippers and all that stuff

Baby thermometer

Medicine - children's tylenol... better to have, than to have to run out and get it when baby is sick

Desitin for diaper rash

Extra car seat base if you need it

Diaper bag

Baby carrier/sling - the maya wrap ring slings are the best!

changing pad and cover

Bedding set and sheets

Warmer blankets and/or swaddle me wraps

Safety things like for the plug ins when baby starts moving around

Baby gate(s)

Feeding sets

Bibs

Trainer/sippy cups

Spoons

Rocking chair

Diaper genie

Sleep positioner if you plan on using one

Basinnet or pack 'n' play (Check out the Arm's Reach Co-sleeper bassinets, they're wonderful!)

Nightlight

Baby monitor

Activity gym and/or playmat

pacifiers if you plan on using them

*Some good advice I got when I was doing my registry - DON'T register for toys or clothes, that stuff is too cute to pass up, and people are going to buy you more than you need even if you don't put it on your registry.

Good luck!!!!

Answer
We bought a Pram/Car seat/buggy travel system from mother care it is also very chunky so we bought Britax vigour buggy - it is much lighter and easier to get into the boot of the car as the travel system was a bitch to fit in! We looked at the one you like but we didn't wan to spend that much as we had bought alot already and the one we got was on sale but it is a nice light weight one that is compact to go out with.

Best travel system to buy?

Just Me

I've been looking online at travel systems and am having a hard time figuring out which one to buy. I am only 9 weeks but I've seen some pretty good sales on them so I figured if I see one I like I can get it ahead of time. I'm not into any specific patterns and I obviously don't know my baby's gender yet (even though I think it's a boy) so something that comes in both boy and girl colors.

It's also important that I can easily buy an extra base which seems to be more difficult for some brands than others. Advice and maybe some links?

Answer
I have the graco happy day pooh. It's light weight and easy to use. The car seat isn't as heavy as most of the others are - which I think is quite important once you add a 5-20 pound baby. It's gender neutral and quite inexpensive. In general, graco is a good brand to go for.

Travel System VS Convertible Car Seat?

J. K

This is DH & I baby #1. I'm not very far along with my pregnancy but I feel super overwhelmed at everything that has to be done before baby arrives. So I'm researching early as usual. lol With that being said I've had many friends that have used those traveling systems and said they loved them however when the baby got a little heavier they would complain the entire time carrying it saying it was too heavy and that their shoulders, back, etc. were starting to hurt frequently. So my thought was to get one of those convertible car seats and then buy a stroller with no traveling system but now those same ladies are saying 'no no no you are being silly.' My Mom is with me and says to get a convertible car seat and save the money in the long run.
I just want to know the opinions of others.
And if you used a convertible car seat what did you do with the baby when you went to a restaurant because as of right now thats the only way I think the travel system would be better.
Thanks everyone! :-)

Answer
Skip the travel system. This isn't a popular answer, but it's the truth. Travel systems encourage unsafe use of the car seat.

According to studies done, until babies are 3-6 months old they should be laying flat or being carried upright in someone's arms (or a baby carrier.) When they are put in a car seat, bouncer, stroller with an incline, swing, etc, their oxygen levels dip. The more premature they are the more danger they are in, and if they have any breathing issues the more danger they're in. The recommendation is that car seats are used for travel in cars, not for sitting, riding, being carried in, going in the stroller, being put on shopping carts, as a feeding chair, etc. And most dangerous of all, don't let the baby SLEEP in them. That's also why they are so adamant about a 45degree angle recline in car seats for infants, it helps them breathe. Some of the best strollers for newborns (like the Chicco, it lays fully flat and puts their feet up too so it's like a little bed) come with car seats to hook into them, basically negating the safest way for the baby to ride, and encouraging the parent to leave them in the seat.

Basically when you see a baby riding in an infant seat, sitting in one during dinner in a restaurant, that baby is in danger for the parent's convenience. I never felt comfortable leaving my daughter in a car seat in a restaurant... we actually bought a travel-high chair that reclined very well and used that, or just held her. Oh, the travel-high chair was so much better than a normal one as well. Perfect to take to a friend's house, or to a BBQ, and didn't take up as much room for us to use every day. See the second link, that's basically what we have.

So for safety reasons it's better not to use a travel system.

Add: Never, never, never under any circumstances put a infant carseat on a shopping cart! Not only is it bad for their breathing, it's not how shopping carts are designed and has been consistently warned against doing for years now because of the number of infants injured or killed from having their carseat put on the cart.

Should i buy a normal car seat or a travel system?

McKenzie J

i am a first time mom with not many friends who have had children and i am completely lost in what is the best thing to buy! i know with a travel system the car seat is limited and with a normal car seat it is rear and forward faces which means i can us it longer, what should i buy?

Answer
Well, leaving a baby in an infant baby seat outside of the car is a risk for SIDS. It can tilt their head forward and lower their oxygen levels, also it can curl their back and isn't as good for them. The recommendation is a flat surface, or in your arms (in a baby carrier that emulates that position.) So it's not recommended to put a baby in an infant car seat in a stroller and push them around and let them sleep there. So... what's the point of a travel system if you aren't really supposed to do that? There are strollers that lay flat, or just buy a Moby wrap or nice chest carrier like the Beco. (Like 2 and 3 are places that rent carriers so you can try them out without spending a lot of money and decide what works for you.)

If you have the money, an infant car seat is convenient in some conditions. For instance, in bad weather or very hot weather it's better to have the seat in the house rather than put a baby in a hot seat in the car (unless you take the time to cool the seat using freezer packs or something like I used to.) Also it's nice that they can transfer from one car to another with little problem (my sister left her son to be babysat for instance and his seat stayed with him so we could drive him home later. A convertible seat is more permanent in your car and so harder to do that with.) Also infant seats fit newborns and smaller better than a convertible seat. With my first and second we did use an infant car seat and then moved to a convertible.

Having said that, with my next we're planning on buying a convertible and using that from day one. The Britax seat we're looking at rear-faces to 40lbs and forward to 70lbs, and you have to put an insert in for a newborn to fit snugly, but they're not cheap ($230-300.) The Cosco Scenara is available only at Wal-mart and rear-faces to 40lbs (forward to 50lbs) and runs $39. Then there's seats everywhere inbetween. For me, I like the fact that because it's going to 70lbs it will last us probably until the seat expires in 6-7 years, and I like the new technology Britax has for forward facing children to limit head movement, but there are MANY great seats.

Just make sure you get a longer rear-facing weight and height limit so that you keep them rearfacing at least to 2 years old (it's 5x safer.) That means if you DO get an infant seat that goes to 22lbs (normal weight) then you'll probably have to buy a convertible in a year anyway. If you buy an infant seat that goes to 30-35lbs (Chicco, Graco Snugride 30 and 35, etc) then it may last you for 2 years but I've never known a baby who liked to lay back in the recline needed for a newborn seat once they can sit up so you'd probably want to buy a convertible in a year anyway.

Add: Just for fun, the fourth link is talking about the G3 Britax line that will come out in July, but at the bottom it talks about how in July, if you are wanting to buy the stroller they have out you can get one of their car seats for free. It's a $500 stroller (not in my price range) but if you were looking at travel systems, it would be a travel system (again, not what I'd recommend, still, sort of fun to find a sale to share.) Rather than a seat you can always get the 'bassinet seat' for free instead, which would make the stroller into a nice little bed/bassinet (which you could use around the house as a bassinet if you don't already have one as well as a stroller.)
