Is it possible for a pregnant woman to get an USA visa for medical reasons?

I have been recommended to have a medical examination in the USA, but do not have a visa and I'm 26 weeks pregnant.
I can pay for the hospital expenses but I have never had a visa (not even asked for one). Please help!

Answer
Yes, a pregnant woman can get a medical visa. Please contact your local authorities in order to inquire about the process. If it is an emergency, then you might be able to get the process sped up somehow. Otherwise, they may or may not allow you to travel into the US before the baby is born, depending on the time it takes and how far along you are at the time you would travel. Again, your local authorities are the ones to ask about this.

Disregard ignorant answers. The American education system is severely lacking, and reading comprehension is obviously not a priority.

Flying overseas next week, wondering what to take to boost immune system?

Baby Laila

I am flying on the 30th on a flight that is 24 hours long. (so fun) And, usually i do get sick when i fly for that long. I did come back to the USA when i was 8 weeks pregnant and was fine, obviously baby is ok. But... I am just worried because usually i don't eat much and get super exhausted. What should i do/take to stay healthy while traveling so i don't get so super sick like i usually do?

Answer
Vitamin C and Zinc really helped me through the winter would get back to back colds. Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face( rubbing your eyes or mouth) untill you can. Good luck!

Questions regarding buying a baby stroller from USA and importing it to India?

which baby travel system to buy on Best baby travel systems out of Child / baby care buy the best price ...
which baby travel system to buy image

Reference-

Hi,

I want to buy a baby stroller travel system from US and import it to India. My relative would buy it from me there and then courier it to me in India.

Suppose the stroller costs around $200, then how much approx would be the shipping costs? And would I have to pay customs duty in India?

Should I send by Fedex or USPS? I would prefer a least expensive method. Waiting for many days for its arrival is not an issue.

Answer
It's going to be expensive whichever way you go so I would go the less hassle way and order it online and have it shipped directly to you. Less chance you will have to get all official if it comes from a company than a real person....

If you sold your used Travel System how much did you charge?

Mama <3

I am selling my Baby Trend Gabriella travel system. This thing was expensive! We bought it new and its in great condition but it is used. So we paid nearly $400 for the set! I was thinking $75? It this reasonable?

Thanks!
I must add its in perfect condition. I washed the pads and wiped it down. There isnt a mark or stain on it!

Answer
When selling my no longer wanted, used items. I tend to divide the new retail price in half, and then move it up or down according to condition.

$75 is a steal, but you don't want to go too much higher, as those looking for used, will buy a cheaper system brand new, rather than pay more for a pricier used model.

I'd probably list it around $125, as it's worth more than $75, but I'm just not certain you could get the full $200 for it, when you can buy a cheaper set up, brand new for under $200.

@someone nice - why do you hate your own race?

baby travel systems john lewis on Museum Shop Gifts :: Viewing 249 to 256 out of 2395 Product(s) [View ...
baby travel systems john lewis image
Q. Why are you ashamed to be White, despite all the achievements and inventions, and how we've improved life so much. There's a lot to be proud of, just like how Black people should be proud of their historical struggles with slavery, etc. and Mexicans, I don't know what.

White people have invented 95% of the things you use today for granted.

Your car? WHITE PERSON INVENTED IT.
Freedom of Speech & the other laws that allow you to be free? WHITE PEOPLE CREATED THEM.
Your areoplane? WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED IT.
Your computer? WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED IT.
Your internet? WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED IT.
Space travel? WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED IT.
Electricity? WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED IT.

Not to mention... the 2nd most successful continent (Europe is first) on the planet, the successor of Europe - the Americas.

Modern day civilization? WHITE PEOPLE MADE IT.

Lightbulb? WHITE PEOPLE MADE IT - except for the "extra" thing by a black man. But it's strange how everything is invented/created/thought of by White people?

If White people erode away, then the essence of freedom and everything we created fades away. Call me "racist" now, but I hate no race, although it may seem like it, but I don't wish death, violence, harm on anyone for their race. I just take racial and cultural pride - feeling superior is a natural human instinct that has been DISTORTED by the media into the minds of every White person.

So, as I said, call me racist now, but when White people became a minority in America (or when they are no longer in government, or any control whatsoever - or when they become super minorities - below 10% of the population in America) America will crumble.

Look, a black guy got in office and fucked up America's credit rating, couldn't even think of a decent idea to prevent the downgrade. Yeah, you could blame it on Bush, but I'm sure he'd of thought of a plan to stop it, he was always full of wisdom whether you like it or not.
@Requism of Spirit - LOL at you.

Radiation Detector wasn't made by a black man?
It was Johannes Wilhelm Geiger, a German physicist, who in 1908, while working with Ernest Rutherford, invented the device that detects ionizing radiation. We know it today as the Geiger counter.

That's enough to discredit your whole site. Let me try and refute more!!!
@Requism of Spirit - I got another one.

Disposable syringe wasn't made by a black perosn.
It was invented in 1853 by Alexander Wood in Scotland.

A folding bed? Seriously, if you're going to call that an invention... If a White man invented the IRON which is supposed to FLATTEN CLOTHES and MAKE IT STRAIGHT then I'm SURE it would of aroused that "I need to have something flat underneath it too!!!!!"

You're stupid.

@Apple Pie - U-bomb

Lol, you stupid person. People send stuff to be made in China because of the people who work there for very little money to put it together instead of paying loads of money to people in the West. It was invented, the style, the idea, the design and all was made by the people before they "send it" to China to be "made".
@Requism of Spirit.

The motor wasn't made by a black man - it was made by a WHITE PERSON.

The modern DC motor was invented by accident in 1873, when Zénobe Gramme connected the dynamo he had invented to a second similar unit.

@CutiePi, grow up. Those inventions had to come from somewhere, and it wasn't from some man in Africa. It was in EUROPE AND AMERICA BABY.

I am wanting to sell my daughters travel system and I can not find the name of it any where. It is from Graco it is gray and the print is purple & pink butterflies. I bought it at Babies R Us early 2008.

Thanks!

Answer
i would call the manufacturer

Have you used the evenflo journey elite pink lemonade travel system?

ani4ani

I just got the carseat installed in my car and it seems as though the back sits too high for a newborn baby's head. Have you used this in your vehicle? I am just a worried mother.

Answer
Evenflo infant seats can really be hard to install and I usually do not recommend them anyway. They are always being recalled and are not made too well imo. A couple of years ago they did a crash test on an Evenflo Discovery infant seat and on impact the seat flew off of the base and went through the rear window. They have also had recalls on the handles because they break with the baby's in them and there have been several injuries because of that.
If you are able to I would recommend going to Baby's R Us and try some of the car seats out in your car before you buy one. I bought a Graco Snugride 35 for my baby and it installed great into my car. Plus you can leave the handle up in the car which the Evenflo car seats you cannot do. By leaving the handle up in your car you can save a lot of space.
If you do decide to keep the Evenflo infant seat please take it to a car seat tech and have them fit it for you in your car.

Mommies- What was one thing you bought and never used?

baby travel system vs stroller on Details about ORBIT BABY G1 MOCHA STROLLER TRAVEL SYSTEM
baby travel system vs stroller image

*Sweethear

What was the one thing that you bought or recieved during pregnancy that you thought you would use but never did? I hear changing table alot but I wondered what yall didn't use.

Answer
Gotta tell ya a changing table would probably be what Id say. Cribs are good, bassinets are good, etc. so why need a changing table too? Usually you just change the baby wherever you are at the time (floor, table, bed, etc) you dont go to a designated 'changing table'. Id even walk in a room and use the crib to change my niece over the changing table because of the height needed and way the changing table was (it was built in to a hutch thing so I was always needing extra room for stuff, the crib just made it simplier).

Another thing would be a travel system. You use the carseat but not the stroller a whole lot and by the time you are ready to use the stroller, the child is old enough for a toddler/baby $30 stroller, so you could have saved $150+ from buying a regular stroller vs. the travel set.

There are a lot of things that are just wasted money that can be used with other stuff instead --- like if its a boy and you buy a wee-wee shield. Someone is making a lot of money on some thing you could use a cloth for (you'd have to clean the wee-wee up with a cloth if they peed toward the plastic wee-wee sheild any ways so why by it?Know).

There's a bunch of baby items you can do without or sub other items you already have around your house in place of.

Disney Collection by Safety1st, any feedback vs. Graco, Evenflo, Gerber & Eddie Bouer?

GEORGE MAV

Currently they are selling it at K-mart & Sears. The price seams too good to be true. Everything is Pooh. Travel System, Play Yard, Walker, Highchair, Bouncer and Swing. Please give me any feedback if you are familiar with these baby products. ThanX

Answer
My daughter is 10 months old. I have the Safety 1st play yard & love it! When she was a newborn, we used the basinet & changing table. Then when she reached the max weight for the basinet we easily changed it to the full play yard & removed the change mat. I'm a big fan of the Pooh pattern & mobile that came with it. My mom watches my daughter when I work & has the Graco pack n play in the Pooh pattern. I like the Safety 1st one better. The Graco has an odd set up for the change table & I didn't think the basinet was as sturdy as the Safety 1st. We never had a problem, thats just my opinion. When you remove the Graco change mat the metal bars that it fits into are exposed. I don't like that. The play yard portion is comparable on both.

I've also got the Safety1st walker which is wonderful. It has 3 adjustable height settings and multiple toys on the front. There is a separate tray area where we can put her Cheerios. The walker is collapses for storage or travel which worked well when we went on vacation so we could pack it up & bring it along.

I also have the Graco travel system with the car seat/carrier, base, and strolller, and the swing. I really love the travel system. It has worked so well. I bought 2 additional base units for like $30 each to put in my husband and mom's vehicles. We put our daughter in the car seat/carrier & transfer her from one car to another without having to get her out of the seat. I also love that the seat has a clip on the back so I can put her in a cart securely when I grocery shop & the whole carrier/car seat fits right into the top of the stroller so she can face me when we're out. We're just now starting to put her in the stroller forward facing without the carrier & the transition is going well. We can use it both ways depending on what we need.

The swing is also great! It has 2 toys on the front & a mobile overhead. There is a reclining seat, a bunch of speed settings & music to go along. There is a secure waist strap & a tray. My daughter enjoyed the time she spent in her swing. We felt she was safe & saw that it helped her learn while she was entertained & played.

If you need to know anything else about these products, feel free to email me pack513@yahoo.com .

Again, I have:
Safety 1st: Play Yard & Walker
Graco: Travel System, Swing, & Pack n Play (at Grandmas)

P.S. I think I heard that they are discontinuing the Day's of Hunny pattern which may be part of the reason for the low prices.

What are you going to buy as opposed to registering for it?

baby travel systems with bassinet on Orbit Baby Stroller Travel System G2- Being Completely Interchangeable ...
baby travel systems with bassinet image

my due

I'm 17 years old and 8 weeks pregnant. My family is not supportive so I'm pretty much going to be doing everything with just the help of my friends and my baby's father. What should I put money away to buy as opposed to registering for it for my baby shower? I'm of course going to get the travel system (carSeat/stroller) , the bassinet , and the outfits for hospital pictures and coming home. Anything else I should get myself instead of just hoping for it?

Answer
What I plan on doing is having my baby shower a few weeks after I find out the sex of my baby. I plan on putting everything I want/need on it. After my baby shower is over, then I can decide more easily what to buy and what not to buy. Hope this helps :)

Edit: Yes, I do plan on buying a crib, swing, changing table, and the other more expensive stuff. But I'd ask for a bouncer, playpen, clothes, bottles, etc.

When can I use the bassinet feature in my child's stroller?

Kayla

How old should my baby be before I start using the bassinet feature in his stroller? We have a Chicco Cortina Travel System. When he's in the bassinet feature should he still be completely in the 5-point safety harness? Is the bassinet feature even safe? Better for some things than others???

Thanks!

Answer
The bassinet feature is there for use from day 1, and you won't be able to use it very long. It's the FIRST stage in a travel system, not something you have to wait before starting to use it.

With the baby flat on his back and in the bassinet (which is the best/safest/healthiest position for a newborn) you don't need the harness. It's not like he can climb out of it.

The only exception would be if you take the stroller on the bus: in a moving vehicle where you can't use the car seat the harness provides extra security. I've once seen a stroller topple over when the bus took a curve (of course that wouldn't have happened if the mother hadn't been irresponsibly holding on to her phone instead of steadying the stroller!) and the baby dropped right out! Horrible to see, and I definitely would have intervened if I had noticed the mother leaving the stroller basically unattended before this happened.

How much money did you spend preparing for baby?

baby travel systems sale image

Between all the equipment and baby supplies how much did you end up spending getting everything ready for a new baby? Did you have a baby shower? Get lots of things as presents?
Thanks!

Answer
I did have a baby shower and got quite a few things for my daughter (Crib & mattress, baby bath, baby towels, clothes, walker, bouncy seat, books & toys, breast pump & bottles, diapers and wipes and probably a few other things I can't think of at the moment). But I also purchased quite a few things as well. I bargain shopped and got almost everything on clearance or on sale and with coupons so I spent much less than I could have. Before my daughter was born I bought a travel system, pack-n-play, crib bedding, stocked up on diapers and wipes (it turned out to be 8 months worth), clothes for the first 6 months, paint and a few other things to fix up her room and it was maybe around $500. That's nothing compared to what I would have paid if I paid full price for everything. The travel system and pack-n-play alone would have been $500 had I not shopped smart.

When should i start registering for my baby shower?

Jamie

I'm having my baby shower June 12th when should i decide where to register and when?

Answer
Go ahead and register now, I am due June 29th and my showers are sometime in May, there isn't even proper dates set up but my MIL started telling me to make them three weeks ago, I haven't even given out my registry information yet and people have still got online and searched for my information on babiesrus to see if I had made one yet and already bought some stuff. People do check to see if you made one before they get their invitations, I always try to find them first so I can get first dibs on what gifts I want to buy.

Last Sunday my dad bought me a double electric breast pump and a baby bath tub that was better than the one I registered for and sent me an email telling me to take the baby bath tub off of my registry and told me the one he got me. My sister asked me for my home address yesterday and told me to take my swing off of the registry because she is ordering it for me off of amazon and it will be delivered to my house. My mother in law started asking around for what pack n play we like so that means someone on my husband's side of the family wants to buy that, we told her we have one picked out on our target registry so most likely they already have it pulled up. My stepmom called dibs on buying the play activity mat already and asked if I can take the one I have off of my registry so no one else buys it. MIL bought us a eddie bauer travel system before I was even three months pregnant because she found it brand new on sale at sears for $90 and that is our babyshower gift from her.

So you see registering earlier can not hurt at all, it is better to in my own opinion. There are plenty of times when I found the registry before I had got the invitation that I picked a big ticket item and asked if some other people can go in together and we can split the cost of the item to make sure they get at least one big ticket item and they can still buy a small gift. The worst thing that can happen is no one buys anything off of your list until you send out your invitations. I find it easier to just work on it a little each day anyways so you don't forget to put certain things on your list that are often overlooked like thermometers and baby medicine.

What is the best way to travel with a 3-year old and a 10 month old on a 3hr international flight?

baby travel systems offers on Buy Baby Travel Systems in Ireland
baby travel systems offers image

Izzya_77

I'll be travelling alone and the only flight that I could get is at night. Any suggestions for what I should carry, what I should pack for my two kids?

Answer
I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 8&5 and baby number 3 was born 23 December). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. In addition to that, we do another 8-10 international and domestic flights a year as a family. I have never had any problems with my children on any of the flights. Here are a few tips and suggestions:

1.) Car seats are not mandatory, but are highly recommended. Your three year old needs to have his/her own seat, but the problem is that s/he may be too small for the seat belts to fit him/her and restrain him/her properly (they'll be too loose).

Since your youngest child is under two, you are allowed to hold him/her as a lap child, meaning that s/he will have to sit in your lap the entire time. The Flight Attendants *should* place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Depending on space and availability, the Flight Attendants might give you a bassinet that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) for both children because it is safer for them - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help your children relax a bit.

A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant or child safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use. Almost all car seats pass this requirement.

There is also a new device that is approved by the FAA for airline use ONLY. It is called CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) and costs $75. It weighs 1 pound, is certified for all phases of flight (taxiing, take off, turbulence and landing), adjusts to fit ALL size airplane seats, and is approved for kids 22â44 lbs.
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their children can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount.

If you haven't booked a separate seat for your youngest child, be nice on check-in and see if they can "block" the seat next to you. They will then only use it if they absolutely need it. I must tell you that on international flights this is harder to have done.

2.) You will need to have all your childrens documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of their notarized birth certificates with you.

Since it is an international flight, you will need passports and possibly visas for them as well.

Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

Another thing you should consider bringing with you is your childs immunization book. That way if any emergency should arise while you are on vacation (no matter where you are) the treating physician will at least have some verifiable information to go on. This book also usually includes what your child is allergic to, and some small but very helpful notes from your doctor.

Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

3.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm
http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air_portal/security/rules_liquids/doc/2006_aviation_security_new_rules_poster_en.pdf
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/security/aviation/airport/airportsecurityadvertisement
You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use. One thing I always like to carry with me is hand sanitizer! I always wipe the trays down with that (followed by a baby wipe) and use it for my kids after taking them to the bathroom (even though they wash their hands). I know that airplane bathrooms are not the cleanest, so that is why I try to be vigilant.

Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your children. You will need this in case they get sick, spill something on themselves, or in case your luggage gets lost.

Bring any medications that you might need for your children should they get sick or that they take regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz (100ml) rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm
http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air_portal/security/rules_liquids/doc/2006_aviation_security_new_rules_poster_en.pdf
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/security/aviation/airport/airportsecurityadvertisement

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making them sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well. I have also seen where it backfires; a parent gives their child a dose of Benedryl to make them sleep, but instead it gets the child more hyper and the parents get absolutely no rest on the flight (and neither does anyone else).

Try to have your child use the toilet or change their diaper as close to boarding as possible. This will help to make your child feel fresh and more comfortable for take-off (which could also mean less problems).

4.) Bring Snacks! just add water packets of food, cheerios, goldfish, animal crackers, dried fruit, etc. are great. New regulations also allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz (100ml), -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food, yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. with you also as long as they are in containers less than 3oz (100ml)
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#9
http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/06/363&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en
http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/requirements

As long as your children are with you, you are able to take as much formula, breast milk, or regular milk that you will need for you child for the duration of the time you will spend in the airport and on the flight (as long as it is within reason). And no, you will NOT have to taste it - no matter what form you bring it in.

All that you must do is:

1. Separate the milk from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size (1 liter) zip-top bag.
2. Declare you have the items to one of the Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm
http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/06/363&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en
http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/requirements

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

5.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your children, such as a few books, toys, a portable DVD player (be sure to bring extra batteries) or let them use your laptop (make sure it's fully charged) with a few movies, and one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal. I always bring a small pillow and blanket from home for my children (even now) because I know 100% that they are clean, and my children are accustomed to them.

My children like to bring along their own coloring books, a Doodle Pad, their Leap Pads (with a few booklets), and scrap paper that they can make their own drawings with and play games such as tic-tac-toe. My daughter used to like to bring along a doodle bear when she was younger so that she could draw on that as well, and my son likes to bring along some action figures to play with. I found that buying a Rose Art kit is great! It has crayons, markers, coloring books, coloring sheets, and stickers that they can color. It definitely keeps them entertained!

You can also play games like pat-a-cake, or I-spy, and tell stories to your children as well. If you tell a story, try to make it an interactive one where your children have a part in it so they stay interested.

You might also consider going to the store and letting your children (I let my children start this at the age of one) pick out their own carry on bag and a few inexpensive toys that will be used only once you are on the plane. Be sure to pick out a few toys without them seeing so that they have an extra surprise when they open their carry ons.

6.) Not all children have a problem with the pressure changes in their ears. If yours does however you'll want to know how to help. For take-offs and landings (the WHOLE way up, and starting from the BEGINNING, or TOP of descent), the best ways to alleviate ear pressure are to:

*Give them something to drink (formula, milk, water, juice - it doesn't matter)
*Give them a pacifier to suck on
*Give your oldest hard candy or mints to suck on
*Give your oldest gum to chew
*Place hot damp towels (usually like the ones distributed to first and business class before take-off and landing to freshen up with - just ask a flight attendant for them) or paper towels that have been soaked in hot water and wrung out, at the bottom of two paper or styrofoam cups, then hold the cups over the ears
*Gently but with some pressure, rub their necks repeatedly from the chin to the base of the neck. This will cause a swallowing motion that will relieve pressure build-up in the ears.

You can also try using a decongestant. It is always best to check with your doctor before using any type of medications though, to make sure you are using the one best suited to your childs needs. I personally have found pain relief medications don't really help, and at least in my experience, decongestants are a waste of money.

7.) Don't worry about what the other passengers are going to think or say should your children cry. This will only add stress, which your children can pick up on, and it could make them cry longer and harder. Instead, just relax, and handle the situation like you would if you were at home. Most times the other passengers are very understanding anyways and some will even try to help you. Which reminds me, if help is offered to you, TAKE it!

How to travel with a six month old?

Heidi

I have to travel alone with my six month old daughter from South America back to the US. The last time I traveled back alone was very difficult- and now she tends to wiggle around in my arms- any suggestions as to how to hold her on the plane?

Answer
I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were each 2 months (now 8&6, and 5 months). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. In addition to that, we do another 8-10 international and domestic flights a year as a family. I have never had any problems with my children on any of the flights. Here are a few tips and suggestions:

1.) You will need to have all your baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of her notarized birth certificate with you. Since it is an international trip, you will need a passport and possibly a visa for your child as well. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

2.) Since your child is under two, you are allowed to hold her as a lap child. Try to book a bulkhead (front) seat where you will have more room, and a bassinet. Bassinets are limited, and not available on every flight. If the bassinet is available (they can only be used in bulkhead seats) it will attach to the front wall for you to put your child in (however you can not use this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children under 40lbs have their own seat with a child safety device - a CRS (Child Restraint System) - because it is safe for the child (especially during turbulence), makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help your child sleep, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit.

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

If you haven't booked a separate seat for your child, be nice on check-in and see if they can "block" the seat next to you. They will then only use it if they absolutely need it - giving you a free seat!

3.) You can take a stroller and gate check it (you can also do this with a care seat). It will not count towards your checked luggage. This means that you will be able to use it all the way up until the time that you board, and one of the handlers will take it from you at your departure gate, tag it, and put it in a special compartment for you. When you exit the plane, it will be waiting for you at the door as well.

4.) Not all children have a problem with the pressure changes in their ears. If yours does however you'll want to know how to help. For take-offs and landings (the WHOLE way up, and starting from the BEGINNING, or TOP of descent), the best ways to alleviate ear pressure are to:

*If your child is nursing, nurse her
*Give her something to drink (formula, water)
*Give her a pacifier to suck on
*Place hot damp towels (usually like the ones distributed to first and business class before take-off and landing to freshen up with - just ask a flight attendant for them) or paper towels that have been soaked in hot water and wrung out, at the bottom of two paper or styrofoam cups, then hold the cups over the ears
*Gently but with some pressure, rub her neck repeatedly from the chin to the base of the neck. This will cause a swallowing motion that will relieve pressure build-up in the ears.

5.) As long as your child is with you, you are able to take as much formula, breast milk, regular milk, juice and/or baby food that you will need for you child for the duration of the time you will spend in the airport and on the flight (as long as it is within reason).

New regulations also allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz (100ml), -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. with you also as long as they are in containers less than 3oz (100ml)

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

6.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly.

Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case she gets sick, spills something on herself, or in case your luggage gets lost. Bring any medications that you might need for your child should she get sick or that she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz (100ml) rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well. I have also seen where it backfires; a parent gives their child a dose of Benedryl to make them sleep, but instead it gets the child more hyper and the parents get absolutely no rest on the flight (and neither does anyone else). Most young children will fall asleep on the plane due to the gentle vibrations.

You should be respectful of other passengers and always change your child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small. Usually the bathrooms with the diapers beds are the handicap ones (they usually tend to be toward the rear of the plane), so they tend to be a little bit bigger and it does help. I also know some people who say that instead of using the changing table, they say to put the toilet seat down, use the toilet as a seat for yourself, and lay the baby across your knee to change their diaper. To make it easier on yourself, make sure that you undress your baby so that she has just a diaper on while at your seat. Grab your diaper, wipes, and ointment or baby powder (whatever you use for changing your childs diaper) and head to the bathroom. This will help to make the procedure faster and easier. Try to change your childs diaper as close to boarding as possible. This will help to make you baby feel fresh and more comfortable for take-off (which could also mean less problems).

7.) Pack plenty of things to entertain your child. Books, small toys, a portable DVD player (be sure to bring extra batteries) or let her use your laptop (make sure it's fully charged) with a few movies is usually entertaining as well. Also be sure to pack one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal. I always bring a small pillow & blanket from home for my children (even now) because I know 100% that they are clean, and my children are accustomed to them.

My children bring along a Rose Art kit which is great! It has crayons, markers, coloring books, coloring sheets, & stickers that they can color. It definitely keeps them entertained! http://www.megabrands.com/en/products/description.php?product_id=1031&brand_id=36&cat=4&age=
I take the contents of the kit out of the box & place them in something a little travel pack. Here is what my sons looks like:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamie_hassen/2577667314/. - outside
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamie_hassen/2577681352/ - inside

You can also play games like pat-a-cake, or I-spy, & tell stories to your child as well. If you tell a story, try to make it an interactive one where she has a part in it so she stays interested.

You might also consider going to the store & letting your child pick out a few inexpensive toys or other things that interest her to be used only once you are on the plane. Be sure to pick out a few toys without her seeing so that she has an extra surprise.

8.) Don't worry about what the other passengers are going to think or say should your baby cry. This will only add stress, which your child can pick up on, and it could make her cry longer and harder. Instead, just relax, and handle the situation like you would if you were at home. Most times the other passengers are very understandin

we are planning to buy travel system for our 1st baby and after reading all reviews, we kind of confuse between 3 travel system,1:Safety First Safety 1st Acella Sport Travel System, 2:Cosco - Travel System, Thorndale, 3:Graco - LiteRider Travel System with SnugRide.. I love safety1st travel system but i dont know how good is that so if anyone use this and have idea which one is good for 1st time parents..
thanks for ur answer

Answer
Safety 1st and Cosco are the worst carseats on the market. You couldn't pay me to use one. I'd go with the Graco. They're all cheaply made and built and aren't that great in crash tests when compared to the models which have internal steel supports that will protect baby better than the plastic. The only ones that have this are Mia Moda, Britax, Chicco, and Peg Perego seats. I wouldn't waste money on an infant seat when I can spend a couple hundred dollars on a really good steel frame seat (Sunshine Kids Radian, Britax Marathon, Fisher Price Safe Voyage (cheap at 165 dollars) which will hold your child in a 5 pt harness to 65 lbs. You'll only be using the infant seat for the first 3 or 4 mos as a carrier. Baby will outgrow it or will just be too heavy to lug around. Get a good seat and just get a cheap stroller. More economical and safer.

How old should my baby be to put in the shopping cart seat?

Aynne

My baby is not born yet she is due February 26. The thing is I bought a Chicco Cortina traveling system for her. It's the infant car seat and the stroller. I heard it was the best and safest so i bought it. I read a lot of reviews saying the carrier does not fit in the shopping cart where you would sit your baby. So I will have to put her in the big part which I won't be able to put a lot of groceries in there. So I can manage for a while but, when do you think she will be able to sit in the seat? I would like to by a comfy seat thing for her and put her in there as soon as she is able to sit up by her self. I was think 5 months? What's the average age thanks.
Sorry for some weird sentences I got mixed up!

Answer
It's not that the car seat doesn't fit, it's that the shopping cart is not made for car seats, and by putting a car seat on the top of the shopping cart the whole thing becomes unstable and can tip over. This has been a problem for decades, but idiot mothers continued to put the car seat on top, and babies continued to be injured. This is why the shopping carts have infant seats attached for moms who want that, but why the car seats should not be used. You can use the reclined infant seats that are bolted to the shopping carts from day one as far as I'm aware, just put a blanket down first.

The toddler seats you should use when your baby can sit up and at your own discretion. They continue to say that shopping carts are not the safest place for your baby to ride and that if you have a stroller or can wear your baby then that's better/safer.

Leaving your baby in the car seat while you shop leaves your baby in a curved position that interferes with oxygen levels in the blood. There's really no reason to do it. They're heavy and if you drop the car seat you may damage it, not to mention hurting your baby.

I would suggest looking into a baby-carrier. With my first I hauled the infant seat in and out of stores and it was miserable, for her, for us, and for anyone who walked by us who might get bumped by that seat. It was awful. We had backaches and were in pain. When she was old enough to sit in the cart, then I was having to spray the cart with cleaners and use sheets and stuff to try and block the cart from her because H1N1 was going around and she was only a year old about. With my second I bought an Ergo baby carrier. We left the infant seat in the car and carried him in the Ergo when we'd go into places. He LOVED it. He'd snuggle in and go to sleep, I had my arms and hands free for shopping, he was safe and sound and I could kiss him anytime I wanted as well as talk to him face-to-face (which is great for development.) I didn't have to worry about the germs of the cart getting him. Much better. I used that well into his second year, he just loved it better than the cart and I didn't have to worry about it.

Can infant car seats rest on any stroller?

baby travel systems with convertible car seat on Cosco Convertible Car Seat - Babies Travel Lite
baby travel systems with convertible car seat image
Q. I've been looking at these Travel System stroller/car seat combo kits, and I haven't actually gone to the store yet. I'm just wondering, do you have to buy the travel system together, or could you buy the car seat and stroller separately? Would they still work together? I'm only asking because I thought I could ask for them as a baby shower gift. Instead of asking for the 170 dollar travel system. I'd ask for the 90 dollar stroller and 50 dollar car seat. That way two different people could buy cheaper gifts.

Answer
If the seat and stroller are the same brand, then yes, they will likely work together with one exception: The Graco SafeSeat does NOT work with all Graco strollers. The Graco SafeSeat is bigger than the Graco Snugride, and most Graco Strollers will fit the snugride, not the SafeSeat. You'd need to register for a graco stroller that specifically says it will fit the Safeseat if that's what you wanted. Steer clear of Evenflo infant seats!!! Very flimsy, constant recalls, and awful recall fixes. They just haven't mastered the art of infant carrier making yet.

The universal car seat carrier strollers can be a good idea, cheaper than a full size stroller and will fit most major brands of infant seats. Less bulk, too, in the trunk. Baby Trend makes one, so does Kolcraft and Combi.

Also, its worth noting that you don't HAVE to get an infant carrier car seat. They are nOT a required stage in car seats. Newborns can go home from the hospital in a rear facing convertible car seat. Convertible car seats last kids until their 2-4 years old (or longer) whereas infant carrier seats are outgrown at 4-7 months, and then you're out shopping for a car seat...again.

as a single parent on a seriously limited income, I now realize I should've completely skipped the infant carrier stage. Its not a 'needed' stage in car seats, its just a convenience thing, and a recent - as in the last 15 years or so - invention to have a stay in car base and separate carrier. Here's why I think its a waste: doesn't last babies very long at all. You spend $60 and up on this carrier that is only going to last 5-8 months! And then you have to purchase a convertible car seat, and somewhere down the line a booster seat. If you skip the carrier phase, you just eliminated one seat. There is now one carrier on the market that promises to fit 99% of babies up to at least their first birthday - Graco SafeSeat1, goes to 30lbs. However, there are limitations to this awesome seat. It really will fit most kids that long, but that's a catch-22. You really going to carry your 25lbs baby in a carrier?! My son was a BIG baby (still is a BIG kid!) and outgrew his carrier at 4 months. And, after baby gets above 10lbs or so, they are a pain in the butt to carry - quite awkward. So its not as convenient as it may at first seem. And some of the 'convenient' ways people use them aren't good.
Carriers should NEVER be placed on grocery carts. It makes the carts unstable and they can tip over, seriously injuring the baby. Also, not all car seats fit all carts, and they don't lock on, they're just sitting there, posing an obvious threat. And some of the carts are shaped or sized in a way that it puts the carrier at an unsafe/uncomfortable angle for the baby. I've seen babies laying in carriers on carts with their head lower than their feet - not a good idea for digestion or spit up.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says Parents and caregivers should never Place an infant carrier on top of the shopping cart. "Many infant-only car safety seats lock into shopping carts, and many stores have shopping carts with built-in infant seats. This may seem safe, but thousands of children are hurt every year from falling out of shopping carts or from the carts tipping over. Instead of placing your baby's car safety seat on the cart, consider using a stroller or front pack while shopping with your baby. "

Also, we are seeing rampant developmental delays becuase babies are in these carriers (and swings, and bouncy seats...) so much. Look around everywhere you go and instead of holding their babies, people have them in these carriers. When on their back and harnessed (and any time a child is in a carrier, he needs to be harnessed, even though its not in a car!) they can not work the muscles they need to develop to crawl, sit up, and walk. In the manuals for these carriers, it even says specifically 'for use in cars and strollers only'! But we all seem to miss that part.

So I highly recommend skipping the carrier phase. I think they are more a pain than a blessing, and a wasted of money if you don't have a lot to throw around. Instead, get a convertible car seat that will fit a newborn (more on that later) and a sling, pouch, or wrap. Not one of those silly snugli or infantino carriers, but something like a ringsling, moby, or maya wrap. Wearing your baby gives everybody what they need. Babies get much needed closeness to mom (or dad, or anyone else for that matter!) and you get your hands free to do what you need to do, as well as you can even breastfeed in one! They offer many different positions to use them in, too, and go higher than carrier car seat weights (20-22lbs). Most go to at least 35lbs, so you will get much more use out of it for your money.

OK - so if you choose to skip the carrier phase, be careful about the convertible car seat you choose, b/c not all will fit newborns well. You want it to have low bottom slots.
Perfect options:
The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. It can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode.

Cosco Scenera - $50 at Walmart/Kmart/Target. Great seat for the price. Goes up to 35lbs rear facing, 40lbs forward facing. Great rear facing seat, but is outgrown very quickly forward facing b/c of short top slots and short shell. You'll still get you're $50 worth out of it, though, as it will last most kids to at least 2 years, quadruple the amount of time of an infant seat!

As you're shopping, remember these rules about seats:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)Children should stay rear facing AS LNOG AS POSSIBLE!!!! The 20lbs/1 year rule is outdated and provides a bare minimum for turning kids forward facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration both recommend keeping kids rear facing as long as possible, up to the limits of their seat, preferably until at least 2 years of age. For good reason: A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone. In other countries, rear facing 2 - 3 - 4 year olds is standard, they understand that its safer.
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs.
If you choose to go with an infant seat I would pick the seat you (stay away from Evenflo infant carriers, too many recalls, crappy recall fixes, overall a very cheap seat) and get a universal car seat stroller like Baby Trend Snap n Go, Combi Flash EX, Kolcraft makes one, too. That way you can spend a little less, sell it when you're done, and get a higher end stroller that will last better.

What is the best car seat to buy?

Kayla Tuck

I am expecting my first baby in November and I have no idea on what car seat to buy. All of the different brands, styles and safety features are mind boggling. What is the safest and most comfortable car seat to buy that doesn't cost a fortune? Is it better to buy the travel system or just wait to get a stroller until she can sit up by herself? Is a convertible car seat as comfortable for a newborn as an infant car seat is? What car seat did you or do you have?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Answer
What you'll really want is a travel system, i.e., the Graco Snugride which has the carseat that will clip into the matching stroller with a installable base for the car. The base stays in the car and the carseat comes out in seconds. Great for those rainy days. Secure the baby in the carseat inside the house and then just snap the carseat into the base once in the car.

Once she is in a forward facing seat, the Graco Nautilus 3-in1 seats are comfortable and convertible to a booster. The last carseat you'll ever buy.

NEVER buy a used carseat.

Thomas W

Hello everyone and thank you for helping me on my question. My brother is having a baby any day now and he is planning on flying out here most likely when the baby is 5 days old. Is that bad? Or how old should the baby be before she travels on a plane with the mother and father. If so what are the reasons why?

Thank you very much.

Answer
As long as their child has had a check-up with the doctor and everything is fine, theirr child will be safe to fly almost immediately after birth. I have seen children as young as 1 day old fly. Make sure that even after their initial visit to the doctor, they take their child for another check-up right before you leave.

I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally alone. Here are some other tips and advice that have always worked for me and I hope will help them:

1.) They will need to have all their baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of his/her notarized birth certificate with them. Have them verify what travel documents they will need in advance to make sure they have everything.

2.) They can take a stroller and gate check it. This means that they will be able to use it all the way up until the time that they board, and one of the handlers will take it and put it in a special compartment for them. When they exit the plane, it will be waiting for them at the door as well.

Here's a product that can attach to most car seats so that they can use it as a stroller and get it through the airport more easily. http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html

3.) Airline regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat).

The Flight Attendants should place them in a front seat where they will have more room. Depending on the airline and length of flight, the Flight Attendants might give them a bassinet that attaches to the front wall to put their child in (however they can not uses this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device.

4.) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help their child sleep, and gives both of them the opportunity to relax a bit.

A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use.

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. They should call their airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

5.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing they can do to help with the ear popping, is if their child is nursing, nurse him/her. If he/she is not nursing, give the child a bottle to drink (formula, water- it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take, and they are not limited to the amount they can bring aboard (as long as your child is with them), do not worry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

New regulations allow them to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that they have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Have them save their money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide them with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that they request, no matter how many times they request it.

Another trick is that if their child is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to nurse or drink, gently rub his/her neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

They can also place hot damp towels (usually like the ones distributed to first and business class before take-off and landing to freshen up with - just ask a flight attendant for them) or paper towels that have been soaked in hot water and wrung out at the bottom of two paper or styrofoam cups, then hold the cups over the ears to help with the ear popping.

6.) Make sure to pack one or two comfort things, such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal.

7.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for their child. They will need this in case he/she gets sick, spills something on him/herself, or in case their luggage gets lost.

8.) Keep their diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm They can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use.

They should be respectful of other passengers and always change their child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small. Usually the bathrooms with the diapers beds are the handicap ones (tend to be at the rear of most planes), so they tend to be a little bit bigger and it does help.

I also know some people who say that instead of using the changing table, they say to put the toilet seat down, use the toilet as a seat for yourself, and lay the baby across your knee to change their diaper.

To make it easier on themselves, make sure that they undress their baby so that he/she has just a diaper on while at their seat. Grab the diaper, wipes, and ointment or baby powder (whatever they use for changing their childs diaper) and head to the bathroom. This will help to make the procedure faster and easier.

Tell them to try to change their childs diaper as close to boarding as possible. If the flight is not long, they may get lucky and their child will not need their diaper changed while on the plane.

9.) Keep your doctors name and number with them. Also get the name and number of a doctor where they are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

10.) Bring any medications that they might need for their child should he/she get sick or that he/she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Tell them NOT give their child medicine with the hopes of it making him/her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

11.) Tell them to keep their calm. If they get stressed out, their child can pick up on it and it will make the travel that much harder.

12.) Last but not least, if help is offered to them, take it.

Answer
Yaaaa...you don't need 95% of that stuff...lol

Okay....so here is what I needed and used in the 1st week

Infant car seat
Stroller (I actually had 2...1 regular and 1 jogger..but the jogger was borrowed...I didn't need it, but was super glad I had it as it was easier to work with on hills and in the park etc)
Diaper bag
Diapers and wipes
Sleepers/onesies/socks/pants/shirts any other clothing you want/need
Crib and crib sheets
Monitor
Bassinette or playyard or cradle...whatever you want to use while baby is in your room beside your bed - i still don't own a playyard, we used a borrowed cradle and that was fine...my son is 16 months...sometimes I wish I had a playyard, but you definitely do not need one
Breast pump and storage bags
Bottles/nipples (if you are breastfeeding, you only need 1 or 2 bottles...I had 3 and never opened the 3rd bottle...I only used 1 and left 1 at my mom's house so that if she was watching him she could put frozen breastmilk in the bottle...hence the breast pump
They don't need toys for some time...they don't play with toys in the first week...but it is nice to have some car seat toys for entertainment
A play mat is very nice to have
Soothers (2 or 3)
Soother clip
Vitamin D drops
Bouncer/swing...I had both, but only needed 1..he would sleep in the swing, it was awesome!
Breast pads and cream (For sore nipples)
Burp cloths...but you can use old towels too
Infant Bathtub (very cheep...just a regular one, you don't need the ones with hoses/showers etc)
Wash cloths/towels..again you can use regular ones
Mild baby bath soap
Gripe Water (excellent for gas etc) non-alcoholic
Cornstarch (Not peneten etc for diaper rash) this works way better and is much milder on skin!

Hmmmm...that is about it!!

There are things that are nice to have...and you can totally decide and ask for those things too...but the must haves are above!

Hope this helps!

Baby Registry: Gender Neutral or Gender Specific?!?

Crash

I just found out on Friday that I am going to be having a baby girl. After the stress of choosing a store to register at and finally coming to a conclusion, (AlbeeBaby), I've now got another problem. Since I plan to have more children in my future, it would be logical to register for nuetral big-ticket items (travel system, convertible carseat, high chair, etc.) but OH the pink. I absolutely adore the pink carseats, the pink strollers, the pink high chairs, but if i have a boy in a few years I'll have to buy all new everything. Or will everything be so used that they'll need to be replaced anyway? So my main question is, what did YOU do when you were creating your baby registry? Did you register for gender specific or gender nuetral items? Are the cutesy pink pricey baby gear items just an outlet for big buisnesses to make more money? Thanks!

Answer
Clothes wise, i'd say pink it up. Their going to get too stained most likely to reuse anyways. Carseat issue, i'd say get the design you want also, quite frankly, these get so dirty with food, leaky bottles, leaky diapers etc....that you will probably want to re-buy that item again with a future one. Bed set, depending on how fancy you go, these can be relatively inexpensive, i'd say also get what you want. Plus you'll get so sick of seeing the design you'll prob want a new one with another child also. But the bigger items like playpen, high chair, swing, walker, bouncy seat etc... I would go with a more functional design and color scheme, these are pretty expensive and can usually be reused without a problem. just pick one with a design that will hide stains well and you should be set.....oh yeah, and on a personal note, when it comes to picking out a stroller/travel system for your registry or to buy yourself, dont skimp on it. Not saying get the most expensive, but dont go for the cheapest. I went for the cheaper stroller and ended up HATING it, it was just harder to push and had a crappy overall design. If you know any other people that have had babies in the past couple of yrs, try to recruit them to go along and show you what they used alot of during the first year, it'll help alot with making your registry so you'll get stuff you'll actually use, not just all the cute crap that catches your eye :) good luck!
