What kind of Stroller do you prefer?

K-Rock

I am a first time mom expecting in June and I have heard a lot of different things about strollers. I would like to know do you prefer a 3 wheel stroller (jogger) or a 4 wheel stroller and why? Thanks

Answer
I personally prefer the three wheeled all terrain strollers like Jeep Liberty and BOB strollers because of the front swivel wheel that has the option to lock straight.

I had a Jeep Liberty Urban Terrain with my son because I liked getting out everyday and walking briskly for my exercise.

However, it is a big stroller and my son didn't like it when he was a smaller infant. I wore him in a Snuggli during his very early months, and he finally began enjoying his stroller by the time he was about a year old.

Fortunately most of these all terrain three wheeled strollers have adapters that you can use to put your car set in, turning it into a travel system. However, you cannot jog with this stroller when you have the car seat installed. You must wait until baby has the head and neck strength and stability before taking him or her out on anything more than a stroll.

If I had the budget, I would may have gotten the BOB Revolution, but I liked the basket and other storage options on the Jeep Liberty better.

So bottom line: Three wheelers!

Jogging stroller versus travel system â pros and cons, & what about hiking?

Woodland H

Iâm thinking of getting a jogging stroller to use on our local hiking trails here. Has anyone ever hiked on trails using a jogging stroller? Or is it just meant for dirt roads & that type of terrain? What is it like hiking? Oh also, do jogging strollers come w/ the infant car seat? Does the basket underneath have ample storage compared to a travel system stroller?

What else are the pros & cons of jogger vs travel system? TIA!

Answer
Our Jogging Stroller turns by lifting the front wheel, which is a hassle to use for strolling around town, so we've got a variety of different types of strollers. I've used the jogging stroller on trails and mostly mulit-use paths (paved and dirts paths for biking and walking), never used it for hiking back country and while it's easier to push, I would think it would be unstable for hiking purposes (if the trails are bumpy and have obstacles).

The jogging stroller really isn't great for babies that aren't sitting up yet, it doesn't come with a special infant seat and we much preferred a standard stroller when our little guy was an infant (he could recline and sleep, plus the shade bonnet was bigger to protect him from the sun.

We opted not to get a Travel System, and it's worked out great. We've never had a problem with getting the baby in and out of the carseat to the stroller, and it's less gear to carry around. Car seats are in the cars permanently and we only used our infant seat carseat in shopping carts for a few months.

All in all, the jogging stroller is not getting used much at all, I prefer using the Kolcraft Contours stroller for our little guy. I suggest you visit some stores and see the different types personally, then shop on line to maybe save some money.

Hope this helps!

Please help with advice finding a car-seat / stroller system...?

Dana Lucas

Hi everyone, I am so overwhelmed with this decision. There are so many options out there! Can you help with some suggestions based on my personal criteria / preferances? My baby is due in April!

1.I have a compact Toyota Corolla car.

2. I don't want anything too heavy to lift, too big to fit in the trunk, too difficult to maneuver. I need easy!

3. I do not do a lot of shopping or visiting the malls. I will be strolling primarly in the neighborhood and on pavement. If I want to go off road / out in nature...I figure I can purchase a seperate trail stroller for that down the line...Also, I don't plan to run with the stroller.

4. I want to have the type of car seat that can click right into the stroller without waking the baby up.

5. I want the car seat to be very comfortable and very safe of course! We will be doing on average 2 hours a day of driving (I have an older child to drive to school and back, and to activities during the day).

6. I am not too flashy, I don't need to buy anything based on image or brand name or where it was made. Yet, I don't mind if a good practical choice happens to also for example, be a very expensive European stroller... I will base my decision of the practical reasons only.

7. Price doesn't matter. It can be $100- $500. I just want the right match.

8. I am currently considering an Eddie Bauer trail maker travel system & the Peg Perego Pliko P3 stroller, Infant set, & Base set. I found these choices based on great reviews and they are very different price ranges...but seem to both satisfy the above needs.

9. I hope what ever system I buy will fit my babys size/ age for at least 6months. But longer would be even more practical right?

Thanks for any input, opinions, suggestions & advice!

Answer
According to Consumer Reports, the best car seat for babies OVER 22 pounds is the Chicco KeyFit 30. It is a Recommended Buy with excellent marks for Ease of use and ability to fit to vehicle with the LATCH system. It has a very good mark for crash protection.

Why don't you get that seat with the matching Chicco KeyFit Caddy car seat stroller frame? This way if you want to get an all terrain stroller or jogger later on, you won't have spent a fortune on a big travel system?

Sometimes moms need to get to know their babies and see how their lifestyle changes after the new arrival before making a final decision about a stroller. I know my life was turned upside down with the arrival of my son!

Car seat plus stroller frame for now. Think about it. :)

Maclaren twin triumph stroller for a newborn?

Emmy's mum

I have been given a Maclaren twin triumph stroller. I am due in february when my daughter will be 21 months old. I'm wondering if it will be suitable for my newborn? I know it does fully recline and is meant to take a newborn safely, but on the practical side, how is the newborn strapped in? Is there any kind of carrycot that fits into it? Would it be comfortable?

Answer
My best friend got pregnant a few months back so I had been in charge of certain things since then, and one of them is being the Pushchair shopper. So being the geek that I am I did a full research of the best pushchairs - so much so that I swear Pushchair companies can now hire me as an infomercial host and I'll do really well! lol

Anyway, to answer your question my dear, as a matter of fact the Maclaren Triumph is NOT suitable for newborns. It can recline to more than 150 degrees, but it's only suitable from 3 months onwards according to the manufacturer, but I personally inspected the pushchair and I wouldn't put a child in there who couldn't sit up properly on their own just yet. Don't get me wrong - I think the Triumph is one of the best strollers around, but it's best for children from 6 months onwards in my opinion.

The Maclaren Triumph is a lightweight stroller, NOT a travel system, hence no carrycots will fit with it. If you want a pushchair that you can use from birth up until your baby is 3 or 4 years old, your best bet is to buy a pushchair that you can convert into a pram/stroller and travel system.

The most popular models that fulfill this criteria that are also getting great reviews from parents are:
Maclaren Techno XLR Travel System
Graco Quattro Tour TSB
Silver Cross 3D Pram System

There are loads more, but it's hard to make recommendations with the information you gave. There really are a lot you need to consider before buying a pushchair, as making the wrong purchasing decision could be a costly mistake that you'll end up doing over and over again until you get it right! (I know other parents who bought more than 3 pushchairs within 2 years!)

For example, you need to check if the handle height is suitable for you, if it's small enough to fit in your boot, if the wheels are suitable for the terrains you'll be using it in, if the seats are washable and easy to clean, if it's easy to fold/unfold with one hand, if it's easy to use for public transport, if the shopping basket is big enough for your needs and if it's accessible, etc.

What happens to your body when you are struck by lightning (whether directly or indirectly)?

baby travel systems all terrain on Baby Trend Stroller Reviews | Stroller Reviews
baby travel systems all terrain image

Smo

Does your skin blister (if the current is weak by the time it hits you) or receive burns at the point of entry. What happens to your heart and other organs? What about your blood? Anything else about lighting striking a person is appreciated.
Thank you Mak _Time, that helps a lot, actually.

Answer
first a little theory:

There is no weakening in the current, it has already traveled hundreds of miles at light speed carrying 30 to 100 millions volts (have you ever been shocked by 120 volts? imagine 30 millions!) at around 100,000 amperes, and THAT'S the tricky part, I can stunt you with a stunt-gun with 300,000 volts but it wont kill you, because of the low amperage, but a lightning?? enterely different subject baby!!!

a lightning is usually less than 2 inches diameter, but its power so intense that the air around it gets heated at 54,000 ºF!! .... yes, that's five times hotter than the sun's surface, getting the picture yet?

So, as far as I know, if you are that unlucky and get caught in a thunder storm in plain terrain with no shelter and a lighting hits you, several things happen to your body, oddly enough chances are that you may survive (just 25 to 30% mortality rate) thats because human body is somewhat an electrical conductor, and current will pass your body in their way to the ground, but most of survivors sustain permanent injuries for that, as far as I know:

-cardiopulmonary arrest, heart stops, breathing too
-nervous system damage, or shutdown, with all kinds of mental sequels from amnesia to plain insanity
-coagoulation of the blood
-internal bleeding
-first or second degree burns, far worse if metal objects are present, like coins or jewelry
-eye damage, retinal bleeding, corneal injury, cataracts
-ear damage, ruptured ear drums, vertigo, dizziness
-contusions, fractures muscle and ligament tears

hope it helps

whats the best brand name for travel system strollers?

maria

im a first time mom and im due in 3 weeks, i need a stroller asap but i want to know which brand would be good graco, safety 1st. chicco, cosco, baby trend, Eddie Bauer.

Answer
Since it's not safe to leave a baby in the car seat in a stroller (it keeps them at an incline, and it's better for them in the first few months to be flat whenever possible, or being carried. It reduces their oxygen levels to have them at an incline. Car seats are for traveling in cars basically, not for putting on shopping carts, using as a feeding chair, or in a stroller, and you don't leave them asleep in them.) you need to look for a stroller that lays fully back, flat. Chicco does. I know that the Graco Quattro does as well. The Chicco brand has a very good car seat as well. I don't particularly like the cheaper Graco Snugrides, but I do like the Snugride 32. Course if you're not using the car seat with the stroller you are free to look at any stroller you want really.

We have a baby trend all-terrain stroller that I honestly love. It's not approved for younger than 2 months since it doesn't lay flat, but the 3 wheel design makes it easier to push up and down curbs, over cracks, through sand or loose dirt or grass or snow. I'd never pick another stroller to be honest, maybe one of their more expensive newer models that fold down better, but I love it. The car seat though... they're high rated for safety but when I tried it out in the store it was such a pain to try and hook the chest hook and push that into the lap belt at the same time the way they want you to. So we didn't go with that car seat.

Add: Sorry, but it is the truth even if folks don't like to hear it. Car seats are for traveling in the car. Not for sleeping or leaving your child in for any longer than possible. Until they fix that, it's taking a risk that you don't have to take simply by laying your baby flat in a stroller, carrying them, or putting them in a chest carrier. And if you're not going to put a car seat in the stroller, then there's nothing tying you to one brand over another. Pick the car seat and the stroller that's best, and who cares if they match?

Add: Just for the record, Costco, Eddie Bauer and Safety First are made from the same company, same group. And they have the highest number of recalls recently. It's not a company I trust. Chicco and Baby Trend have had far less recalls, and tested highly for safety.
