Help! I may be deported to Canada! What do I do?

Tananda Tr

Help! I'm a pregnant 16 year old who may get deported to Canada! What do I do?
My Dad got arrested and I'm worried I will be deported to Canada. I don't know what to do! I've lived in the US since I was 2.
I have some questions.
1.) What parts of Canada are there where they speak English, and things are more or less like the US?
2.) Will I have to get new credit cards?
3.) Would it be better to stay in the US illegally, or go to Canada?
4.) The father of my baby suggested I move to Japan with him. (He's Japanese). I'm worried that since I don't speak Japanese, that would make me too dependent. Plus I don't know him real well. Am I stereotyping? Should I go to Japan?
5.) Which country has the best public assistance for teenage mother, Canada, Japan, or the US? (Keep in mind the only country I'd be a citizen in is Canada).
6.) What about my 12 year old brother, who was born in the US? Could he go to Canada with us?

Answer
1) Almost all of Canada speaks English, only in parts of Quebec the only language is French.
Canada is very similar to the US, if you go to a big city such as Toronto or Vancouver, it is pretty similar. There are the same stores, Starbucks, we have buses, taxis, etc. We just have colored money.
2) You do not necessarily need to change your credit cards, but you would atleast have to change the address (and at 16 I dont think youre allowed to have your own credit card?)
3) Staying in the US is illegal, and that could result in a criminal record, take the safe choice, go to Canada, it is not that bad. We just like hockey a lot more and are maybe a little less patriotic.
4) Japan is a long way away, and is very different. I have friends who have travelled there and they loved it, but it is different and the language is also very different (it is not like French where the alphabet is the same)
5) If youre a canadian Citizen you will have access to our health system so that means you'll have assistance in Canada for a minimal price (when you go to the hospital they dont ask for your credit card)
6)I think he could come to canada im not sure, you should be asking a border offical, and social services
You should remeber that at 16, you'll need a guardian if your dad is not coming with you
Oh, and we dont live in igloos

My 3 month old daughter has very complicated and somewhat unknown medical problems. Does anyone know...?

Q. ...of a VERY good Neurologist that I can take her to? She has a chromosome disorder that the doctors have never seen before. We don't know what goes along with it so we are having to just watch and wait. We do know that it is the cause for a large hole in her heart that was surgically repaired on Nov. 14th, along with some physical features. Small, low placed ears, wide nasal bridge, underdeveloped jaw and pelvis, larger forehead. About 2 weeks after surgery she had a seizure in the hospital but the doctors blew it off because she didn't do it again in their presence... She had another one in the hospital that the nurse chalked up to an "underdeveloped nervous system" and said wasn't a seizure. Since we brought her home she has started having them more frequently and after 2 stays in the hospital (she was sent home because she didn't "perform"), 2 EEG's, and a fight with the Neurologist, it has been found that they are, indeed seizures. Before the seizures became more frequent, she had started doing a myoclonic jerk. This happens upward of 40 or 50 times in a day some days. She is also having strange "dystonic" movements where her eyes will look in strange directions, her head will turn from side to side constantly, her arms and legs will move. This will sometimes last for 30 min or more at a time where she just can't stop moving. I am having no luck with the doctors here. They aren't looking at the whole picture and are telling me that it's "just myoclonis" or "just dystonic movement" and "we are treating the seizures". Well, since she's been on Keppra, the seizures aren't as violent or frequent, but still happen every couple of days. The myoclonic spells and dystonic spells seem to happen when she is gearing up for a seizure or has just had one. My question is, has anyone seen this in an infant and what was done to help control this? Does anyone know of a GOOD neurologist that I can take her to? I am willing to travel as far as I have to in order to get her the help she needs because the answers just aren't coming from Arkansas.

Answer
I would do some research on the internet and figure out the top 25 children's hospitals in the USA and contact all of them.

I know the Children's hospital in Denver is good. And not terrifically far from you.

The Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, Canada is a very good research hospital too. Worth contacting.

Maybe the Mayo Clinic? A great hospital in general.

I just can't imagine how concerned you must be. Big hugs.

EDIT:
Ok, I did some research for you:

Baby Eczema, a real treatment...?

Jaffit

My daughter is now 9 months old. She's had severe eczema since she was born. For many months we struggled with remedies that had little to no effect. It became worse and worse. Our G.P. had her try a steroid ointment, Hydro cortisone .1%. It also had little to no effect. After months of her suffering through our attempts, we took her to the Sick Kids Hospital of Toronto, Ontario. The Doctors there were amazing and within HOURS her eczema was cleared up and is still controlled to this day. What my doctor had tried was on the right road but not quite there.... what they prescribed was three short baths a day and two separate steroid ointments. Hydro cortisone at .1% for her face and Betamethisone at .05% for her body, all sealed in with a layer of Vaseline. What made the difference was the ointment versus the cream... it has to do with the water content. Now I know that many people are concerned with using the steroid ointments. I was informed that as long as there is a need for them within the system that it does not cause any problems. I only trust these doctors after speaking to MANY. So, parents, please take my experience and help your babies. I've done the field work, please reap the rewards. Now at 9 months old, she's been on the regiment for 5 months her eczema is completely controlled and she is finally starting to grow out of it. She has only one bath a day and I only do her face when she needs it, every two days or so and her back and body once a week or whenever there's irritation. I really wanted to share this info with other parents out there who are struggling with this. There were no unanswered questions I could post on though! As a side note, some doctors recommend anti-histamines at night to help with irritation and inflammation occurring over night.... tricky stuff, you don't want the wee ones becoming used to the sedation as a means to fall asleep.

I hope this information finds its way to those who need it.
A few other points
-my GP thought it was food related, found out this is not possible. KEEP THEM ON THE BREAST.
-cologne and perfume are HUGE irritants. My daughter can not kiss daddy after he's shaved
-Heat also irritates her.
When an irritant is present I can quite litterally watch her skin react.
If your child is at all similar, please take the advice and help them. It's made all the difference in the world.
Do not worry about diet. It does not effect the condition. Also, perfumes of any kind are a no-no. As mentioned, perfumes of any kind effect her immediately, be forwarned, parents. Breathable fabrics are also a must. Those lovely fluffy sleepers and blankets are nice to look at but the polyester is a huge irritant.
I have not noticed a reaction when she is emotional. She is a VERY relaxed child, though. So that could be why. Even at her worst, when she was scabbed all over her face and head, she was not overly bothered by it. We handled her scratching with mittens for a couple of months until she needed to start using her hands.... and yes, Sick Kids is absolutely amazing.
To be brutally honest, I brought this information because I tried all the "home remedies" I found on the internet and for severe eczema they do not work at all. This regime is for babies who who are covored in sores and are suffering. Sorbeline is a great treatment for mild cases. Honey I'm not too sure about. I just want parents out there looking for a solution, to see this testimony.... I've done the work for you, as has my daughter testing the home remidies and over-the-counter products. For SEVERE baby eczema, don't even waste your time. Take this information to your GP if they have not found the solution and ask.

Answer
Zyrtec isn't that bad and helps retard the migration of eosinophils, thus lowering the risk of asthma and other allergies by reducing inflammation (first link - research article).

Have you tried baths with plain bath salts (like Dead Sea salts)? Those baths seem to help my son's eczema. Certainly there is plenty of evidence that both softened water or bleach baths are helpful, just the bleach baths need further studies and you need the right directions for doing them. We compromise by offering sea salt baths.

As for the steroid treatments, yes it's steroids and yes over use is associated with thinned out skin - especially the ones by prescription. But as a biochemist I will assure you that the large molecules can not travel very far beyond the local area applied and will not effect her endocrine system or liver at all, it's only local so do use them to help when it's bad. You don't want a child with a skin infection, babies and children have been known to scratch down to blood vessels and bone when sleeping because of the itch of infection.

OH yeah, does she also have a reaction when she's very emotional? My youngest does, I can see it move on his skin, totally weird.

Need opinions. suggestions on what i should be looking for in a stroller?

Sexyness

Im currently 25 weeks and my dad is going to be buying my stroller for me.. He said to look around and find one i want and he would get it..

I have heard so many differing opinions on what to look for..
here are some things i am looking for in a stroller
I have a mazda 3 so would like it to fit in my trunk
i want it to be stable and sturdy if walking through snow, grass, sand, etc
i would prefer a travel system
i want it to last me.
i would prefer a 3 wheel one. but would like to know if there are any good 4 wheel ones out there

some ppl say to stay away from made in china strollers.. Why?????

Also the only place i know of to buy a stroller is babies r us / walmart. I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and if anyone knows of any other place to look it would be appreciated

Answer
Sears has way better strollers than Wal-Mart. Babies r us is okay, but overpriced in my opinion. A cup holder is handy, and one thats comfy to push. Go to the stores, and push a few around. Put a box of diapers or a doll in it and try getting it over a bump and turning it. One that's easy to collapse is a big bonus. Also, put a diaper bag or something on the handle, if its easy to tip over like that put it back. this last one, not a huge deal but I really liked is one that you can switch around so baby is facing you or out when pushing it. If your ever caught outside on a windy/snowy/rainy day it helps.

Best infant car seat brand/travel system?

Q. I'm thinking graco and already have graco travel system but just wondering if I made the wrong choice this is my 1st child and have no experience with car seats. Should I get a convertible?

Answer
The Gracy Snugride 35 actually was rated one of the best infant seats on the market. The Snugride that goes from 20-22lbs actually are fine as well. The problem tends to be that babies outgrow them before 2 years old, and the tests say that a baby should rear-face to 2-4 years old (4 years old according to most of the research.) Now if your car seats are already in use, then I'd say just keep using them. They're safe, but you'll probably have to buy a new one in 6-8 months. A convertible gives you the ability of using the seat hopefully for the next 6 years and keeping them rear-facing longer (also after 6 months, when the baby is sitting up, they're more comfortable.)

I don't like travel systems as much because the strollers packaged with them tend to be heavy and hard to push. Plus, SIDS recommendations are that your baby sleeps on a flat surface not at a tilt. Car seats basically are the best place for a baby in the car, but when you take them out of the car you shouldn't keep them in a car seat. So a stroller that lays flat, or a chest carrier/sling you can use is safer for the baby to be in. And remember that an infant seat cannot sit on a shopping cart. Shopping carts (and car seats) are NOT made for that. Also, when you take an infant seat out it increases the weight of your baby by whatever the seat weighs, 20lbs sometimes, and it can really hurt your back hauling a bucket around like that. After your baby is 4-6 months old you can get a stroller that sits them up more safely (they're sitting up on their own more by that point) and are much easier to push.

If you have the money, I prefer the Britax-70 line. They rear-face to 40 and forward face to 70lbs, and I like the fact that Britax will replace your seat if there's an accident, but also that they guarantee it's safety in a small accident (most other seats require you to replace after a small accident as much as a large accident. Since Britax tests at higher impacts, they can guarantee it's safety after a short accident.) I like how this line actually has a steel bar on either side, and each is independently latched to the car's Latch system, plus the fact that it allows anchoring even rearfacing. Anchoring is when the top of the car seat is tied down to the floor of the car. In an accident where the seat belt fails or the latch fails that anchor can keep the seat in place.

With my children, I used a Graco Snugride for my first, and a Graco Snugride 35 for my second. With my first I hauled the seat everywhere and just about broke my back and arms. :P The stroller was a monster to deal with (and actually got recalled.) She was switched to a Britax Decathlon at 16 months about. Because of fitting issues, we didn't go directly to the Britax with my second born. With my second, we got the Snugride 35 and left it in the car, taking him in and out, using an Ergo carrier. That was far more enjoyable and when he was crying or teething I could put him in the Ergo and bounce on my exercise ball or do things around the house and he'd calm down and sleep. If I was at church or something I could put him in the Ergo and walk and he'd fall asleep. It was far better for both of us. At about 10 months old, I put him in a Britax Boulevard 70 and we tried it on my newborn preemie nephew and he fit it as well. I'm impressed at the changes, and like it a great deal. If/When I have a third, we will go immediately to a Britax Boulevard 70 (or whatever has been updated.) They're more expensive, but should last the full 6 years until it's expired, and I have no complaints.

What are trusted brands for Travel systems, cribs, baby etc?

g (

So I'm looking at travel systems and cribs right now.
And I'm curious what do you think is the best brand?

I'm looking for it at different stores for cheap like Walmart, Target, Shopko.

I see Cosco, Graco, Evenflo, Safety first. What are the best brands you recommend or doctors recommend?
Also, what does it mean when it says use of 1 month and up? What should I use as a car seat before she is one month?

Answer
I have an evenflo travel system and have had no problems with it. When I switch to a bigger car seat I am planning on a Graco as I just like them better. I have a Graco playpen, a fisher price swing a stork craft crib (yes there was recalls, but tons of baby products get recalled all the time....most times because people dont use them properly) Honestly...most products you see in stores are good and safe. If they werent they wouldnt be sold.

Stroller for your baby girl?

Jocelyn's

What travel system did you buy for your baby girl & how satisfied are you with it? Please give a brief review. We are expecting a girl in May and we are currently looking into strollers. Please include links if possible. I like neutral colors. I am looking into a Graco brand one and it has good reviews..there's just one negative comment about how it makes their baby sweat so much :(

Thanks in advance! Best answer will be given to the person with most detailed information.

Answer
We bought the Evenflo Aura Elite Travel system in "Oh So Big"

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2864792

The colors are completely gender neutral, which I wanted so I could use for baby #2 if I choose to have another..also, she wears so much pink and purple, I didn't want to add that to a pink stroller, too!

I love the travel systems, very easy to go from car to stroller without removing the baby and bouncing them around from place to place. The steering on it is impeccable and the handle in front allows for steering with one hand.

It has a handy wiper container built in and has 4 cup holders! (2 up top, 2 infront of baby)

It's pretty light and folds up/down easily.

The car seat handle is nice, it's one if the easiet to carry (that I've used) The seat itself is pretty light which makes carrying a hefty baby a tad easier on your arms and back!

The carseat base is adjustable and when Olivia was a newborn I was able to recline it back a bit so she was laying down and her neck wasn't flopping forward.

We go for walks almost everyday and the stroller and wheels are holding up very well, it's definately well built. It was also very easy to assemble!

There you have it!

Best Travel System Stroller?

kayliee mo

I'm looking for a stroller but i get mixed reviews on all of them. I need something sturdy and something where the baby can maybe face me maybe by Graco? And something neutral or girly. I was looking at the Graco MetroLite Travel System - Cherry Blossom and the Graco Alano Travel System - Zoe. Any reviews on those either? Any suggestions help!

Answer
you will get mixed reviews on everything - something great for you may not work at all for me

and you may need more than 1 stroller.....(i have 3, and use them all for different things)

to me the metrolite offers little to no underseat storage

the only way you can have the child facing you in a graco stroller is to use the stroller with the carseat - attach carseat to stroller (easier than sounds, very quick, safe, secure) so for a graco it would have to be a travel system -

then you can choose how long to have them face you - up to 22 pounds or 30 pounds - snugride (22 lbs) vs safe seat (30 lbs)

you may also consider a universal stroller in addition to the travel system - it can be used with any carseat - the kolcraft universal 2 is very nice, very light, can be folded and unfolded 1 handed (by moms that is....dads will probably have issues - is not advertised as 1 hand fold) it has a small parent tray, and quite adequate under seat storage basket

do not worry so much about the print or pattern - there are far more important things on a stroller to worry about, such as:

seat recline, flat or not - IMPORTANT for infants and babies who are not sitting up yet - a bonus for the flat recline, is that you can also change your baby in the stroller, a much cleaner option than public changing tables (i carry around a can of l
lysol for just such emergencies)

size of the under seat storage basket and ease of use

if you are exclusive walker, have car or use city transportation, weight of folded up stroller, size of folded up stroller and maneuverability of folded stroller - the graco i have, you can not move using the wheels when folded up - the brake is on when folded - my universal you can have the brake on OR off when folded - great for moving while holding the baby/carseat, diaper bag, shopping bags, etc

how long you are going to use the stroller - they have weight limits as well

very important - parent tray/organizer and cupholder - sounds like a luxury in reality a necessity - car keys, cell phone, water, baby bottle (for the first year, you will not be letting your bottle sit in the stroller area cup holder...how many times do you want to pick up the bottle from the ground, and would you even give it back to your baby after it feel out on most public areas????)

size of sunshades and rotation (180, 90), peek a boo window are 2 minor things that are quite important to me - checking on baby and babies are very sensitive to bright light so a large multiple position canopy is very important to me

we have a graco quattro tour deluxe travel system with the safe seat - it is an EXTREMELY nice, comfortable (for baby and mom) stroller. it is also very heavy and is hard to fit in the trunk of my car - so for errands around town (a lot of in and out of car) i still use the universal, and only the stroller for trips out of town, strolls in the neighborhood, or for 1 or 2 longer stops when out - 3 or more stops or just 1 quick stop and i use the universal.

if cost is a factor (it was for us) try sears - my local store had the quattro tour deluxe on closeout for 90 bucks - regularly 240 bucks - so i did not give a whit about the pattern, but it is a nice chocolate brown with tan/beige print - the universal i found on craigslist for $15

graco does have 2 new girly prints out that i know of - a pretty purple flower one from babies r us, and a pink one also, not sure where you can find - go to gracobaby.com - but keep in mind for the lighter prints: stroller and car seats get dirty quite easily (even with us OCD types) - car seat covers are very easy to remove and wash......strollers are another story entirely - you need a screwdriver, a lot of time patience AND the instruction booklet is VERY HELPFUL - not to mention drying time for the cover - using the stroller with the carseat - you will definitely want to scotch guard the stroller first - or get a darker or neutral print - babies spit up a lot and toddlers can be quite messy - and a stroller is something you will use for at least 2 years - (my 3rd stroller is a size up from an umbrella, more square, has a tiny canopy and tiny underseat storage - but is great when doing laundry and hanging clothes on the line, cleaning out or washing the car, and was quite cheap - bought at a thrift store - took apart to clean/wash seat, looks brand new and works great to take baby around the house with me doing chores)

Travel System for my Sister's first Baby?

J.R.

So my older sister is pregnant with her first child, it's a girl. She is due sometime in December. So I was thinking about getting her one of those Travel System stroller things but I don't know what the best deal is. I want one that won't be too bulky, and is very sturdy and light. I also don't want to spend more than $200. So where would be a good place to look?

Answer
Babies R Us or Walmart.

Personally I have the Graco Elyse Travel system and I love it!!! It is light weight, The stroller folds with one hand, It had good reviews, I know 2 other moms who have it and both love it!!

I had a girl also so That's the one I got. I wouldn't recommend Even Flo - My bf's sister just had a baby also and her evenflo is horrible! And they get tons of Recalls.

Answer
While I don't claim that the Canadian Health Care system is perfect, I do believe it is better than the American system. That said, even if Canada had a similar health care system as the U.S, there would still be people that crossed the boarder. For different reasons.

Large American cities are sometimes closer than large Canadian cities. Cities such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, are few and far between. So it's sometimes its faster to go to an American city. An example is Windsor, which is about 5h from Toronto, but just across the bridge from Detroit. Large cities, also, develop expertise in certain fields. Such as Oncology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Cardiology, and so on. Again, Canada has has only 3 major cities, where as the U.S has many.

Just because a few Canadian go to the U.S for health care, doesn't makes the American system better. It's just a red herring. There is a growing amount of Americans traveling to third world countries, like India, to get treatment. Does that mean that India has better health care?

As for baby Joseph. I want to know what you think of the following article.

chicco travel system?

lizgas

I am looking at travel sets. I went on consumer reports and baby center. i see that in consumer reports chicco was the one brand that did excellent on the crash test and preg preggo, britax, baby trend and graco did very good on the crash protection. we are thinking of getting the chicco travel set or one of the graco travel sets. I went on baby center to look up recalled car seat. graco had a recall in sept of this year so i am a lil sketchy. its seems like chicco and baby trend are the only brands my local stores have. I was reading the reviews on chicco and some people were please and some were just upset that they paid too much and that the car seat does not fit in to a shopping cart (i think thats scary though) i would like some advice. people that have used chicco baby trend and graco what have been your experiences. what do you reccomend, tips? Thank you, this is my first baby

Answer
We went with the Graco Travel System and now we're using the Graco Toddler Safe Seat and we couldn't be more happy with it.

And as far as the shopping cart issue...that scared me too and I never did it... I kept baby in the stroller and used the stroller basket on the bottom as a shopping cart

We've just now started grocery shopping like normal again since baby is old enough to sit in the shopping cart like a big boy...but for the first year...we used the stroller.

CHICCO, BRITAX or Graco baby travel systems!!!!?

Amy

I am looking for the best all around safe but practical baby stroller with infant car seat....i know the CHICCO is top rated and #1.....has anyone used either of these brands and which models?? What r ur opinions and comments?? I need ur help ladies!!!! I like the CHICCO cortina and BRITAX b agile but not sure which would be best.

Answer
Leaving a baby in a car seat to let them sleep or to let them ride in a stroller is not a recommended sleep position. The tilt and the curve of the seat decreases the oxygen level in their blood. For a newborn, you want to use a pram-type or flat surface, full recline basically. Or you can use a baby chest carrier (like a moby wrap or ergo) until they hit about 4-6 months when they sit up and then it doesn't matter.

So, the B-Agile Britax stroller does not fully recline. Which is stupid because they make plenty of fully reclining strollers in other countries and have a pram attachment even for their other stroller (which is ridiculously expensive.) The car seat is a good one, and I like the anti-roll bar on the seat, and also goes down to 4lbs for preemie use. But with the stroller you'd want to wait using it until baby is a bit older. The wheels, from my experience, are nice and very maneuverable and I do like the design, but not for a newborn.

The Chicco Stroller lays fully flat even without the car seat in it. The car seat is also a good one, some go down to 4lbs for preemie size, and are a highly rated design. When I was looking for an infant seat I was torn between the Chicco Key-fit 30 and the Graco Snugride 35, they were (from what I could see) the best at the time. The wheels on the stroller are fairly standard size though, and it's a bit harder to push (it's bulkier than the Britax design, so that's to be expected.)

The Graco Travel systems tend to be awfully bulky and annoying from my experience, however there are some Graco strollers that I think look very promising but I haven't tried out yet. The Graco Snugride 35 is a great car seat from my experience, I loved being able to adjust the incline without having to try and move the seat around, just rotate the dial. It goes down to 4lbs as well. My Graco Snugride 35 went through my son, then I handed it to my sister who could not afford a seat and it went through her son (she's far less careful with car seats), and she's handing it down to my niece. It still looks in very good condition, so I'm pleased with how it's held up. I cannot say the same for the basic Snugride that I got with my daughter. That one not only got recalled but the padding and everything wasn't that comfortable and after a year of use it just didn't look good at all. The stroller that I got with my basic Snugride had small wheels, was bulky, hard to do anything with, and took up the entire backseat of our car. It was AWFUL. Again, it eventually got recalled.

But the Graco Strollers today have a wider variety. The Fast Action fold Graco lays flat. The Quatro Tour lay flat, Styllus LX, they even have a 3 wheeler now that lays flat, the Trekko. These all come with the Snugride 30, which I wasn't as impressed with, but is still going to be a good seat. The Graco snugride also goes to 40lbs now, but the problem I ran into with my Snugride 35 is that after about 10 months old my son wanted to sit up more and when we switched him to a convertible that allowed that he stopped crying. My nephew right now (my sister is still using the seat) screams when he rides in her car seat with her... but when he rode in my car just twice all complaints stopped and he is an angel in the car (she doesn't believe me, but he is.) That recline is great for babies, but once they hit about 10 months it seems they want to sit up.

If it was me, I would not get a travel system. I'd look at the different seats and try picking them up and carrying them and putting a doll in and out of them, then decide what works with my family. I would not stress the weights, though I would probably get one that goes to 4lbs just 'in case'. Then I'd look at different strollers, some of the ones that Graco has released really interest me with the bigger wheels and lay flat abilities. However, with my son I tried carrying my son in an Ergo and he didn't want out until well over a year old, meaning the lay flat would be more of an option. Consider what you'll use the stroller for; walking in parks, off-road areas, just shopping malls and zoos, up and down stairs and buses? Different wheels work best for different uses. Lighter is always nicer it seems. And see how small it folds up because you don't want it taking up a seat in your car.

what is the best stroller or travel system?

Q. new baby on the way and i am researching strollers, car seats, and pack n plays. what are the best out there?

Answer
Travel systems are bulky and unnecessary. When kept in a car seat a baby can have trouble breathing, and sleeping in the car seat is even worse. So I'm going to talk 'types' rather than brands.

CARSEAT: the current recommendation is to keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible, at least to 2 years old. Look at the first link for information about why rear-facing is so important. There are infant seats that rear-face to 20lbs, and some that rear-face to 30-35lbs. There are also the option of convertible car seats which can go from 5lbs-45lbs (depending on the brand) rear-facing and then forward to as high as 85lbs. The cheapest convertible that goes to 40lbs rear-facing but then is quickly outgrown is the Cosco Scenara available at Wal-mart for $40 (including shipping.) The point being that you want a seat that will rear-face a long time, or if you want to use an infant seat to plan on a rear-facing seat when the baby outgrows the baby seat. I do like the Graco-Snugride 35, which rear-faces to 35lbs, but I've found most babies want to sit up more by 10-12 months and it might be wiser to either get a convertible or get a cheap infant seat and replace it once they're large enough to want a new one.

STROLLERS:
First, for a newborn you want the baby to be able to lay flat (sitting up can decrease oxygen levels.) Also, there is research about babies who face their parents developing better than babies who are faced out towards the public. So, if you can find a stroller that lays flat and faces you then that's what you want. However, it's rather hard to find that, and I personally find that it's easier to get a baby wearing sling (like the Ergo or Moby Wrap) and wear the baby the first 6 months. After that they typically can sit up and it's easier to find a stroller that works for them. Strollers are rarely recalled so you can try them out in the store and then watch to see if someone sells it on craigslist or something. When you try them out try going over different obstacles, larger wheels tend to handle things like sand and obstacles better, but if you're using it for shopping then you want to try weaving in and out of tight corners. If you're using it on parks and trails then you want a different stroller than if you're riding the bus with your baby every day. It's all about where you live and what you're using it for.

Pack n Plays:
Wait on this one. See the second link. As of this year, pack-n-plays FINALLY have a safety standard, and as of last month they have adopted a safety standard for the bassinet attachment (before then they didn't.) There are a lot of deaths from pack-n-plays not working right, and they are not a good place to leave your baby to sleep. With these standards there are exciting changes that probably will happen in just the next year... but it also means there may be a lot of recalls and discontinuing of unsafe pack-n-plays. Also, Disney has just released the first ever machine washable pack-n-play (that's right... before this they were not washable. We can all gross out now.) See third link. To me, that means that the play-yards in the next year or two not only are going to be safer, but they're going to start to be washable! It is NOT worth it to buy a play-yard right now, you'll only regret it in a couple of years when they're better.

BABY CARRIERS:
When I say this I am talking about a chest-carrier, like the Moby Wrap or the Ergo. However there are some like the Baby Bjorn where the baby is dangling from their crotch, and this can contribute to hip dysplasia. The fourth link explains what you want to look for in a wrap, carrier, or sling (or even how to make sure they sit in a car seat.) There are several carriers on the market that hold the baby right, I do personally like the Ergo because it goes from newborn to 40lbs and allows a chest, hip, or back position, the versatility has been something that keeps us using it year after year.

Stroller help!! Bugaboo or Chicco travel system?

Weeeee...

We just got the bugaboo chameleon it had to be shipped and it arrived today but 2 days ago I was in a baby store trying to explain to my mom why the cheap Chicco travel system was crap and I ended up falling for the darn Chicco stroller it was, 1 hand fold-able has expendable handles and cup holder for me and my boy and may other user friendly features. Now I think I like the chicco thing better but I already own the bugaboo.Yes the bugaboo is super cute but I really need what ever functions the best I already need back surgery I need light wait and easy
If you have had experience with either can you give me you thoughts. Also price is not a factor at all so that doesn't help me decide.

Answer
I love my Chicco car-seat and stroller! I actually have the Trevi which is smaller than the Cortina. They are so easy to use, and I love them! When I'm running errands, I am out of the car, and ready to walk in the store with my son in a matter of seconds!!! When the baby gets bigger, and you have to take out the newborn insert in the carseat, it is really ugly, but I don't care since is is so great! (Also, it's really easy to scrub all the spit-up and keep it clean.)

Is it safe to jog with a travel system stroller?

Kristina

I want to start jogging some while on my daily "walks" with my 10 week old son but am not sure if you're supposed to jog with regular strollers. I have a travel system by Graco and it seems plenty sturdy and safe for a moderate paced jog. I'd rather not spend more money to get another stroller when my other one's brand new and I use it for everything else.

Answer
It isn't recommended. They aren't made for jogging. Hit up a yard sale or craigslist for a good used jogger. Most of them will accept any car seat, and your baby is old enough to go in the stroller without the car seat if it doesn't fit. I got my jogger on sale at babies r us for $60, when she was 2, even though we already had four different size strollers. I sold all of them but an umbrella stroller and the jogger. I am pregnant again, and bought a sit n stand, but will use the jogger as the primary stroller.

Jogging stroller versus travel system â pros and cons, & what about hiking?

Woodland H

Iâm thinking of getting a jogging stroller to use on our local hiking trails here. Has anyone ever hiked on trails using a jogging stroller? Or is it just meant for dirt roads & that type of terrain? What is it like hiking? Oh also, do jogging strollers come w/ the infant car seat? Does the basket underneath have ample storage compared to a travel system stroller?

What else are the pros & cons of jogger vs travel system? TIA!

Answer
Our Jogging Stroller turns by lifting the front wheel, which is a hassle to use for strolling around town, so we've got a variety of different types of strollers. I've used the jogging stroller on trails and mostly mulit-use paths (paved and dirts paths for biking and walking), never used it for hiking back country and while it's easier to push, I would think it would be unstable for hiking purposes (if the trails are bumpy and have obstacles).

The jogging stroller really isn't great for babies that aren't sitting up yet, it doesn't come with a special infant seat and we much preferred a standard stroller when our little guy was an infant (he could recline and sleep, plus the shade bonnet was bigger to protect him from the sun.

We opted not to get a Travel System, and it's worked out great. We've never had a problem with getting the baby in and out of the carseat to the stroller, and it's less gear to carry around. Car seats are in the cars permanently and we only used our infant seat carseat in shopping carts for a few months.

All in all, the jogging stroller is not getting used much at all, I prefer using the Kolcraft Contours stroller for our little guy. I suggest you visit some stores and see the different types personally, then shop on line to maybe save some money.

Hope this helps!

Baby Travel System Help?

Rocio

Okay so we are shopping for baby items now! Yay!
My husband and I really want a convertible car seat, particularly this one "Safety 1st Complete Air⢠65 Convertible Car Seat - Great Lakes" (here is the link http://www.sears.com/safety-1st-complete-air-153-65-convertible-car-seat/p-04918152000P?prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=G2)
But we are wondering if this car seat, or a similar convertible car seat would work for those new "snap n go" strollers, where its just a base, and you should just "click" the car seat in.
We want a travel system, but wish they wouldnt come with just the seat for the infant. Which is why we want the convertible seat, it lasts longer.

(this is what that snap and go stroller im talking about looks like http://www.sears.com/safety-1st-clic-it-33-infant-seat-carrier-black/p-04901811000P?prdNo=23&blockNo=23&blockType=G23 )

Please help.

Answer
The Safety First Complete Air is a great car seat... but it's not an infant snap-n-go type of seat. There's no convertible that will work with the snap-n-go strollers because they are all 'install and keep it there' seats. But really you don't need the snap-n-go Travel System. They're not worth it.

First, SIDS recommendations are that babies lay flat when they're not being carried. Even sitting in a car seat causes their oxygen level to dip and babies have died sleeping in car seats. Car seats are the safest place for them to travel in the car, but it's not for sleeping or spending long periods of time in.

Second, a snap-n-go stroller is cheapest NOW, but once the baby outgrows the infant seat (some as early as 6 months, most by a year or two) the stroller is garbage. You can't use it without the infant seat. And I'll tell you now, most babies want to sit up more from 6 months on. Compared with a normal stroller that will go to usually 50lbs and will last you for 5 years? No contest which is the better stroller. If you want something that lasts longer you do NOT want the snap-n-go, you want a normal stroller. I personally like the Baby Trend 'jogging' strollers with the big wheels for an economical choice. Try them out in stores. Small wheels tend to have problems going through sand (like at parks) and going up and over curbs/cracks/stairs are harder with small wheels.

To point it out, strollers are also rarely recalled and you can buy them used without worrying about an expiration date. So you can go on craigslist and buy a used one without it being an issue. The strollers that don't lay flat the baby can use once they can sit up while propped and their head is steady, usually from 4-6 months on. In the meantime, babies are usually very easy to carry, or get something like a Moby Wrap or Ergo and wear them (for the record, you can't put a baby seat on shopping carts, and using a stroller to go shopping is hard since it's not a cart, but put the baby in a sling/wrap/carrier and they'll fall asleep. It works WONDERFULLY.)

If you really want a snap-n-go you may be able to find one and a car seat to go with it on craigslist. Do NOT use the car seat in the car, that's not safe. However, if you're just using it for the stroller, then you should be able to do that.

What is with these travel systems?

Kimmie

I'm trying to find a full size stroller for my 1 month old, but all I'm seeing in stores are travel systems. The kind of stroller I'm looking for is one that has a flip it handle on it where you can flip the handle back to where the baby is facing you, and you can flip it back later. I've found only two that matches what I want, but I can only order it online, and I'd like to look at it in person to make sure it's what I want. But one of them where I can purchase at Walmart.com is a travel system. I'm just wondering, when did these travel systems start coming out? And why does it come with a car seat? Is it some kind of new safety rule or something? We already have a car seat that my daughter can grow into, and I feel like we won't be putting that seat to good use till later on. How does everyone like the travel systems?

Answer
The travel systems started coming out around 10 years ago or so and have become very popular. Its not really a safety rule, most parents just find them to be more convenient since you don't have to risk waking a sleeping baby moving them from the car to the stroller.
I don't think there are too many strollers with the flip handles anymore (I know of a Graco one and there's this one http://www.walmart.com/ip/The-First-Years-Wave-Stroller-Urban-Life-Black/13352099 )but there are alot of stroller that have a seat that you can face in or out, the only problem is you have to remove the seat to turn it so its not as convenient as the flip handles. There are a lot of choices for strollers like that though, there's the higher end ones like the bugaboo's or the more affordable ones like these http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mia-Moda-Atmosferra-Stroller-in-Nero/14555772 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kolcraft-Contours-3-Wheel-Standard-Stroller-Cinnamon/13004572 . I have a Rock Star Baby stroller and love it. Even though I do have to take the seat right off to turn it the other way I don't find it too inconvenient. It has a car seat adapter bar so I can use it as a travel system but I usually only used it with the car seat if I was just quickly running in somewhere, other wise I would take my daughter out and put her in the bassinet seat it came with or the regular seat when she outgrew the bassinet. I never liked leaving her in the car seat for too long because it wasn't as comfy as the stroller seats are.

where are the anchor points for installing a baby seat in a mitsubishi expressL300 campervan?

sapphire66

Lovely old campervan rear passenger seats collapse to make bed. Have newborn and wish to travel but can't put a large bar across back. Any other suggestions please.

Answer
I'm not familiar with your van specifically but I know a lot of vehicles don't have anchor points, especially if you mean the LATCH/ISOFIX system (called various other things in other countries) which only was required in all vehicles manufactured after 2002.

I don't know about the collapsing seats but check the owner's manual for your vehicle - if you don't have it, I'd go online & search or to your local Mitsubishi dealer & see if you can get a copy. Since you have a newborn, you should be using a rear-facing carseat & everything I've read indicates they work great with just the seatbelt if installed properly. Definitely worth a visit to your local police, fire department or any the other places that do free carseat safety checks.

Good luck!

Please and Thank you!!!!

Answer
omg! for sure the baby einstein. my son had it and love, love, loved it. he is almost 10 months and still uses it.

the toys are great and its really versitile. you can use some of the stuff on her crib too!

as for the strollers.....i think graco is a little cheap. why don't you check out peg perego...they are top of the line in strollers.

also maclaren is a good brand...but for when they get a little older. their umbrella stroller is one of the best.

as for peg perego...try the Pliko P3.......we love it! and it can turn into a travel system. all you have to do is buy the car seat.

they come in great colors. every year they have a new line of colors for their strollers. and there are many more models besides the P3. A new one that looks nice is called the Si.

Good luck.

Would you recommend the Chicco Cortina Travel System (stroller/car seat)?

Linds

Why or why not? Thank you!

Answer
i bought the keyfit 30 infant seat and the chicco trevi. i wanted a lightweight stroller because we travel a lot and didnt want a big bulky stroller. the cortina is a fullsize stroller that has nice features but the trevi works better for us. i love the keyfit 30. it only fits in shopping carts at one store so i started to sling the baby when i go grocery shopping. it is easier than having a bunch of people oohing and ahhing over my baby while i try to grocery shop anyway. ive had a graco travel system before and i liked it but that was 10 years ago. the chicco is really nice and i loved the extreme pattern. i also have the chicco play yard. what ive learned in baby products is you get what you pay for. the chicco line is top rated.

It depends which model you have. They make a lot of different kind of travel system with different features.

Baby Trend Phantom Jogger Stroller - which car seat?

LaDiDa

I love the positive reviews for the Baby Trend Phantom Jogger Stroller, but am discouraged by the reviews for the Baby Trend Phantom Infant Car Seat. I am somewhat confused cos the Baby Trend Jogger Travel System has great reviews - I assumed it's the stroller and car seat mentioned earlier, sold as a set. Either no one likes the car seat on its own, or I'm getting the strollers mixed up.

Looking for options for car seats for the Baby Trend Phantom Jogger Stroller stroller, I dont see any mention of compatible car seats for the stroller on the Baby Trend website. I don't care if it is a Baby Trend car seat, it just needs to fit the stroller.

I'm so confused with the many strollers and car seats there are and want a set that's affordable but wouldnt fall into pieces within months. My budget is $200 for both the car seat and the stroller.

Just wondering if any of you have the Baby Trend Phantom Jogger Stroller, and what car seat do you use with it. How do you like the stroller? What other car seat/stroller combo would you recommend if not this?

Thank you very much in advance!

Answer
Personally, I think for that budget, its a great option.

The baby trend seats are known to be nice seats in the carseat world. They are affordable, and they've made some improvements in the last year or so. I read some of the reviews on target.com - frankly, I don't put much into reviews online for carseats.... 9 out of 10 people have their seat installed incorrectly. So clearly, its harder to use a seat when its used incorrectly.

(you can get the whole system here: http://www.albeebaby.com/baby-trend-jogger-travel-system-9139ct.html with 10% off by the way)

This is a good system: http://www.albeebaby.com/graco-quattro-tour-sport-travel-system-nectar.html and the seat goes up to 30lbs. The graco strollers are actually pretty good quality... they are just huge. But if I was in this pricerange, it's probably what I'd end up with.

If you can go up just a bit - what I would recommend is the chicco system... it's much more like a high end stroller/carseat then other mass produced strollers -
http://www.albeebaby.com/chicco-keyfit-22-cortina-travel-system-adventure.html

Stay away from Evenflo...

I'd say you're headed the right direction with the baby trend. You an also buy a stroller and combine it with a carseat individually...

like you could buy this: http://www.albeebaby.com/fraco-metrolight-stroller-in-soho.html and this: http://www.albeebaby.com/graco-infant-safeseat-step-1-8a15nct-nectar.html

if you're having a girl... this: http://www.albeebaby.com/quinny-zapp-stroller-bright-pink.html and this: http://www.albeebaby.com/maxi-cosi-micro-infant-car-seat-happy-flowers.html (LOVE This one...)

Im looking to get a baby stroller thats a jogger with a baby car seat to be inserted!?

Unique<3as

Can anyone recommend any brands or stores in canada that might have?? I just want 1 stroller thats why it must come with a baby car seat or be able to attach a baby car seat cuz my baby isnt due till aug.1.10.

Thank you kindly
btw i know i cannot jog with the baby till its almost 1y old, and its ok, i just am lookinf for one stroller that will be perfect for me and a jogger with baby car seat is the one :)

Answer
Hi - there are a bunch!

My favorites are the BOB Jogger and the Baby Jogger City Series - they both take car seats using the additional car seat adapter. I believe they all work with graco car seats - a handful work with peg perego and chicco.

You could also plan ahead - if you think you might have more kids in the future, look into the Phil & ted strollers - you can use them with a car seat now - and later they turn into a double. Baby Jogger has a similar stroller also that turns into a double.

Now - if you think you are going to seriously job - then I can only really recommend the B.O.B. Revolution - it is really the only true jogging stroller that I would feel comfortable putting many miles on jogging with. The others are more like SUV type strollers.

If you want a cheaper option - and one that is sold as a "travel system" - then get this one - http://www.albeebaby.com/baby-trend-jogger-travel-system-9139ct.html

One last note - you could always just buy any jogging stroller you like, and simply get a snap & go for the first few months that you want to be able to use the car seat in a stroller...

what pushchair, pram or travel system would you advise for someone who is really young themself? it needs to be suitable for public transport, stylish and suitable for a newborn baby. what pram pushchair or travel system do you think is best? any links would also be good.

Answer
I would recommend something that is quite compact for pushing up and down on buses etc, ive seen lots and lots of lovely prams around. My friend was also in a similar situation to yourself and she opted for the Bugaboo Bee (out of john lewis) and she LOVES IT!! xx

Where can i get a double travel system pram?

Answer
Not sure what you mean by "pram" but I use the double snap and go stroller. I bought mine with the Graco safeseats from Craig's list, whole thing (2 car seats, 2 bases, and double stroller) was $150 and in like new condition.

Is Baby Trend EZ Ride Travel System Eclispe a good travel system for babies?

Porscha

Need help on picking out a good travel system for my unborn son!!!! Want a light weight car seat and stroller

Answer
I wouldn't get a travel system. Most of the time they are made to rope you into a specific car seat or specific stroller, and one or the other isn't what you'd choose normally. SIDS is a risk for babies who are in a sitting position for more than an hour a day, the position lowers oxygen levels in their blood, so while the car seat is the best place for the baby in the car it's not once you get out of the car. It's MUCH better to put the baby in a stroller that lays flat, or a sling/chest-carrier. Even if the weather is bad you're hopefully just going to take the car-seat+baby into the house, then back again. Though having the car seat on the stroller is better than on a shopping cart, there's just no real good reason to worry about a stroller that allows the car seat on top of it. If you do use a wrap/sling/carrier for the first 3-6 months then you can also look at any stroller on the market safely and not be restricted to one that lays flat, which means you can really find a good lightweight one that will fit your lifestyle.

Rather than looking for a set, look for the car seat you want. This link has a list of recommended car seats that you can look over. I personally don't like BabyTrend because of the harness-clip that they had when I checked them out, it required a bit more coordination than the others. Basically it required you to put it together, then put it in at the same time. They may have fixed it by now, but it was annoying and I couldn't see my mom being able to do it. I prefer where you can put in one side then the other. However, if you try out a BabyTrend at the store and like it, it's a good brand.

Then if you really want a stroller that car seat will work with you can usually find one that will either go with it or allow you to use it with the stroller. Like, if you like a certain Graco seat, but like a baby trend stroller, you can look up the manual online or go to a store and look at it and usually find that most infant seats will secure into the stroller no problem. Since the strollers are less likely to be recalled, you can even find something on craigslist afterwards and usually save yourself some money.

If you DO want a travel system, I recommend looking at the Chicco line since they're well known for being a good car seat and a stroller that lays flat.

But if you want something that's very lightweight and will be easy to go through say stores and everything with baby, look at slings and things like the Ergo or Beco or Boba carriers. I've used mine for 2 babies now and I can't imagine going back to carrying the baby seat and trying to juggle it or even using the stroller for a newborn. They sleep so much better against you, and there's nothing quite like them looking up, touching your cheek, and laughing while you're shopping. :) I used the infant seat with my first and it was one of the lightest on the market... but it STILL hurt our shoulders and backs. I'd go with a wrap/sling/carrier first, stroller second, stroller with a car seat... never.

what is the Best travel system?

jenniferas

i am trying to decide on a travel system & needed to know which one is better.
yes it's the carseat & stroller combo thing

Answer
It really depends on what you're looking for. There is no universal "best" system for everyone. Some have lots of storage, but are heavier. Some are lighter, but more expensive. Some are more affordable, but lack in details that might be important to you (Do you want two cup-holders? Are the styles and colors important to you? How often are you going to be using the system? Et cetera.)

I did a ton of research on them because I wanted the best bang for my buck. I initially fell in love with the Chicco Cortina system because it was easy to use and small. The reviews are also mostly positive, and the negatives were about things that didn't matter too much to me (its fairly heavy and the under-seat storage isn't as expansive as most systems).

However, after a lot of thinking, my husband and I decided that a travel system wouldn't be the best for us. I live out in the sticks, and won't be pushing a baby carriage all that often. Lugging a travel system around just seemed like a whole lot of "extra" that we really didn't need. We ended up deciding on a Graco Snugrider infant seat and bought a lightweight Graco frame to attach the infant seat to--instant carriage! It just seemed silly to us to have a huge travel system to push and infant seat around in.

Once she grows out of the infant seat, we'll pick out a new stroller. If the small, lightweight system works for us, we can pick out a cheap umbrella stroller. If we decide that we need something a little more expansive, we can get a fancier stroller. In the end, it is potentially less expensive to do it this way, plus we'll be able to buy things once we truly know what we're going to need!

So, take a good long look at what you plan to do with the travel system. Think about what you need and don't need, and consider that things may change over the next few months.

Babies R Us has plenty of fantastic (and useful!) reviews of almost all of their products. Its been very helpful to me for picking out strollers, as well as plenty of other kinds of gear. Good luck!

cheap baby travel system?

laura robs

im having my second baby after being made redundant i am struggling to find a travel system thats cheap (well affordable) im in the uk
any help would be grate

Answer
Don't get one. Just get a car seat for now, you don't need a stroller in the first few months they're so light and easy to carry. If you do want a stroller you can find one that's used that will be cheaper than any in the store, they're rarely recalled, and just look for one that lays flat and it's fine for a newborn without the car seat in it.

Having a baby ride at an incline instead of laying flat can affect oxygen levels and some believe the curve of the seat can affect back health, it's just all around better to have them laying flat and not in a car seat unless riding in a car.

How long does recovery take for an ill baby turtle?

shiny_chin

I got two baby turtles (pretty sure they are red eared sliders) from a friend who had bought them for his sister and his mother said no. Being the die-hard rescuer that I want to be, I offered to take them fully knowing that they would get expensive (so, please do not lecture me on that! ;]). However, I did not know that this friend had them for almost a week in the tiny traveling container that he had purchased them in. So, they went through a lot of trauma and became ill (very still, basking for hours on end, not eating, never opening their eyes, not responding to human touch, etc.) and we read up on how to best make them feel finally at home. They are starting to show signs of feeling better by swimming to different spots in their new large tank and resting there and then moving to a different spot with in an hour. So now my question! They aren't eating, still. How long will this last until they eat? Do they have to be fully healthy (is that possible without eating?) to want to eat food? We have tried the recommended pellet food, fresh carrot bits, and romaine lettuce we are trying now. Any suggestions?

Tank temp; 85+
Water temp; 70+
UVA and UVB lamps
Large basking area
shallow water for babies
Hiding places (for those stressful days lol)
Ten gallons for each baby plus an extra ten, tank

So, they've got a happy home now.
Thanks so much for any advice.

Answer
NO caves or hiding they get stuck and they are not bright enough to backout.

They NEED calcium and protein they get it from the fish meat and the fish bones. Drop 20 or so feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows in the tank and watch them disappear in a few days! The more they eat the healthier the turtle. When I got these two 36 yrs ago all we had in back then were goldfish to feed so after 36 yrs and still going strong. They can eat goldfish!
This way when they swim for their dinner they get exercise also!
TOSS in a bird cuttle bone in the water for calcium that will promote better shell growth, it will dissolve real slow and if they eat it thatâs fine!!
They can have garden worms, meal worms, snails, crickets, flies, crayfish small frogs, slugs, tadpoles dragon flies and anything that moves, but only as a treat.
They need leafy greens Romaine, Butter lettuce. (Iceberg and cabbage are bad for them, any other leafy greens will do) for vitamin A that they need at least 3 to 4 times a week.
They love grapes and strawberries and squash apples.
.**Swollen cloudy eyes which means lacking in Vitamin A. Which we all need for good eyes. Google âvegetables with Vitamin A.
Did you know that they need to bask under a reptile light UVA/UVB for up to 8 hrs a day for the vitamin D.

my care for my two 36 yr olds sliders?
Aquatic are a life long commitment. I am no expert, just been blessed with 2 healthy girls for 36 yrs.
I wish you luck. I have been a mom to Two 36 yr old females for 36 long yrs.( plus an 8,5 and 2 yr old adopted males for the last 7 yrs now)
Remember 10 gallons for every inch of turtle.
I have used kiddy pools and plastic pond liners from most nurseries and now a 150 gal pond.
Two BABY turtles (not over 3â a piece) could have a 55 gallon tank to start. TO START Cause if they live youâll need 100 gallons soon.
And my pictures don't lie. All ages and all sizes get along as long as their is allot for swim room and plenty to eat!

Sliders, westerns, cooters , midland, painted, map, yellow bellied all are basically the same and require the same basic care.

Gravel larger than they can swallow
Leave the heater on 78 to 80 degrees always.
These turtles in captivity do not hibernate their eating may slow down some but they will not hibernate.
They will bite very very hard. Under 4" they carry a disease called 'salmonella'. So you must wash after every handling even the older ones too..
These guys can become cannibalistic and will kill the smallest turtle if there is not enough room and food.
Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they poop allot. You need a good filter system!
Total Body length: 5-8" average for males, up to 12 inches max for females. Life span: 15-25+ years
Males have the longer front nails and are used in mating. And are considered mature at about 5 yrs old. You canât start sexing till about 3â across.
They sleep at the bottom of rivers, streams. lakes or ponds or your tank to avoid predators like coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks, possums, raccoons and even some wide mouth bass and us humans.

They get sick easily, shell rot holes actually rotting through the shell, respiratory sickness, lopsided swimming, coughing, vomiting, blowing bubbles from their nose. Fungus white cotton patches on their skin, treat by adding a 1/4 of a cup of aquarium salt per 5 gallons to irritate and hopefully kill fungus. The addition of sulfa drugs such as those sold at pet stores under the name "Dr. Turtle" also should help kill fungus. Here is one source that sells Dr. Turtle. They also now sell a Sulfa dip by Zoo Med to treat bacteria and/or fungus.

My baby Hedgehog died this morning, is the pet store at fault?

Eric

We had a beautiful little female baby hedgehog for about a week, and this morning I woke up to her clinging on to life. She was not sleeping in any of her shelters, which triggered an alarm for me, and her mouth was partially open and occationally wide open gasping for air. She passed away about an hour later in my hands.

Background: We got her from a local pet store in Albuquerque the day that they got them in. We spend over $200 to make sure she had everything she needed to be healthy. We had a water bottle AND a water dish, hedgehod food AND (softer) dry cat food in different dishes, a running wheel, 2 types of shelters with insulation, and toys in her cage. I moniter her food and water intake daily and it has been pretty constant, except for the past 24 hours. I noticed last night that she was still sleeping when I was going to bed, which is unusual (she is usually up and running on her wheel), and her feet were cold. I picked her up and warmed her on my stomach, under my shirt, for an hour until she was warm and more responsive. It only gets down to about 75 degrees in my room at night, and the swamp cooler keeps the house at about 82 during the heat of the day. I feel like I was a responsible first time hedgie owner by becoming as educated as I could before purchasing, so I dont know if it is something that likely started before we got her, or if I did not provide proper care, or if her immune system was just not strong enough. I have only had her for about a week but me and my fiance are very shaken up over it. There was one other male at the pet store and I want to warn them to take him to the vet if it is possible that he could be sick too. If you feel that I was not at fault, please let me know, I could use the re-assurance. I have read several atricles that support the possibility of an illness that turns into pneumonia, and that once they get pneumonia they have very little chance of survival and almost no chance of full recovery. What do you think I should tell the pet store when I call? They are very nice people there and I'm sure they would want to know that their baby girl didnt make it.. I dont want a refund because we already had a funeral for her in the yard, but should I ask for another Hedgie? Thanks for taking the time to read this long question, when you respond please take into consideration that I am truely grieving for this poor little girl.

Answer
Please accept our condolences on the death of your baby hedgehog. Unfortunately, this happens far too frequently due to the way in which pet African hedgehogs have had to travel in North America. Originally, Central African hedgehogs were overpopulating (and getting run over, starving to death, etc.) in northern Nigeria around the city of Kano. Groups were rounded up in 1991, brought to Lagos, Nigeria and offered to animal exporters, and the first air shipment of 2,000 hedgehogs to NYC sold in the pet wholesale market. After that, some 80,000 Central African and Algerian hedgehogs made their way to the USA and about 1993 they became "fad" pets. In 1994, the USDA placed a quarantine on live animals coming from African nations, which made further imports not practical. At that time, the price of a breeding pair went as high as $5,000, which brought in a hoard of profiteers, who did a lot of inbreeding to make money from these unfortunate animals. In 1997 a Registry was started to assist ethical breeders in only breeding hedgehogs from bloodlines clear of fatal hereditary illnesses.

Today, we would recommend only obtaining a hedgehog from a breeder member of the Hedgehog Breeders Alliance (HBA), who must comply with a very exacting Code of Ethics (read it on their web site). HBA breeder member hedgehogs generally sell for between $150 and $250, but the price is well worth it when you consider their guarantees, aftercare, and the fact that they only breed registered hedgehogs from known and clear blood lines. I do not know of any HBA breeders that will sell hedgehogs to pet stores, and most have a waiting list for babies. Pet stores generally obtain their hedgehogs from wholesalers who pay no attention whatsoever to a hedgehogs background. Accordingly, there is always a risk that a hedgehog obtained from a pet store is going to succumb to a preexisting health condition. In reading your explanation, it seems to me that there was probably nothing you could have done in this case.

Best wishes, Z. G. Standing Bear at The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue in Divide, Colorado USA
