latinlady1

Please i need any opinions on this travel system. I am a first time mom and i am having diffucluty picking a travel system.

Answer
It looks like a nice comfortable system that grows with the baby. I will agree with the first answer, though. It will get dirty because it is a light color. I do however like the features and the price seems to be quite affordable.

Parents' suggestions on baby car seat/stroller combos.?

guitarstru

Hello parents...like anything else on the market today, there are 100s of choices when choosing a baby car seat/stroller combination. There is also consumer reports. I'm asking parents' advice on which models are best, and why? Price is not an object in this arena, because safety is first on the list, along with comfort for baby, as well as weight and ease in manuvering the car seat and stroller. Because of the variables, any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I am compiling information and will type on a sheet and forward to my daughter who is expecting her first baby. Thanks for your input.
I appreciate the very helpful information offered. I will leave this posting up and keep passing along info to my daughter. Thanks!

Answer
You're very helpful in preparing your daughter with the list of best strollers that can be used as travel systems. I hope I can help!

First off, if you can't decide on a stroller right away, you could purchase an inexpensive car seat stroller frame such as a Baby Trend Snap N Go or Graco SnugRider. Graco, Maxi Cosi, Chicco and Safety 1st are the top 4 brands for car seats listed in the latest edition of Consumer Reports.

The stroller models I'm about to recommend are highly rated in consumer guides such as the latest editions of Baby Bargains and Consumer Reports.

Next question, does your daughter just want the stroller for city use? ie sidewalks and shopping? If so, the Baby Jogger City Select is a top-rated lightweight stroller choice. It's won gazillions awards and can hold a myriad of infant car seats. It is lightweight and has a Quick Fold technology which is a HUGE seller for this stroller.

If your daughter thinks she may have another baby in the future, she might invest in a convertible stroller. This stroller starts as a single and can later convert to a double. The top-rated choice is also from Baby Jogger and is called the City Select. It can take a car seat and the seats are reversible with 16 different configurations. It is highly rated and popular parenting website Babble named the City Select the best overall stroller.

Lastly, if she wants to take her baby over different types of terrain, the BOB Revolution stroller is the best, hands down. Again this stroller has been highly rated with professional consumer guides as well as reviewers across different web retailers giving it 4.5-star reviews.

Take a look at the reviews below. They are detailed with photos and video reviews.
I hope this helps narrow your choices and congratulations to your family!

If you sold your used Travel System how much did you charge?

Mama <3

I am selling my Baby Trend Gabriella travel system. This thing was expensive! We bought it new and its in great condition but it is used. So we paid nearly $400 for the set! I was thinking $75? It this reasonable?

Thanks!
I must add its in perfect condition. I washed the pads and wiped it down. There isnt a mark or stain on it!

Answer
When selling my no longer wanted, used items. I tend to divide the new retail price in half, and then move it up or down according to condition.

$75 is a steal, but you don't want to go too much higher, as those looking for used, will buy a cheaper system brand new, rather than pay more for a pricier used model.

I'd probably list it around $125, as it's worth more than $75, but I'm just not certain you could get the full $200 for it, when you can buy a cheaper set up, brand new for under $200.

Baby jogging stroller suggestions?

tampopo

I am a first time mom. I like to run and be active, so I want to get a stroller that accommodates newborn/infant/toddler (to save money) that I can jog with.
Do I need a head support for newborn/infant? Or would I have to get a set that goes with a carseat for newborns (will they be supported enough just with a head support?
Pricewise I am looking to spend about $200..

I was looking at "Baby Trend Expedition LX Jogging Stroller - Gracie" at babies r us but wasn't sure if that would be ok for newborn..?

I'm so lost, I need help!!

Answer
Hi and Congratulations on your upcoming birth! I hope I can help you out getting the best stroller for your active lifestyle.

The Baby Trend Expedition LX is a good choice for all you mentioned. It can take a car seat as well when your baby is under six months old.

I do, however, want to emphasize that you should not jog with a baby until they have full head and neck control, which is a minimum of 6, preferably 8 months of age.

With that said, I'd like to suggest another stroller in your price range that is well within your budget: an InStep Safari or Grand Safari.

InStep Safari strollers are compatible with major brands of infant car seats, such as Chicco, Graco and Baby Trend, so you can turn this into a travel system.

The InStep official website has the Safari listed at a suggested retail price of $129.99 and the Grand Safari is $169.99.

Take a look at the link below that gives you a full review and accurate information about each Safari model with all the features you get, photos and testimonials, as well as where to find the best price.

I hope that this helps you in your search. Carefully compare the Safari with the Baby Trend Expedition - both are excellent choices.

Pregnant woman travelling to ireland?

Ash

My aunt is travelling to ireland and Travelling around the country for 2-3 months on a visa. But she is 6 months pregnant. She says she will be back before the baby is due, but what if she isnt?? She doesnt have medical insurance ( she lives in Canada) or a lot of money... Wht if she is in ireland when the baby is born? Will she be able to get into a hospital? And what about when she gets back? Would the baby be considered canadian or irish?

Answer
She needs to check first the airline will carry her

a medical insurance policy in Canada may not necessarily cover her medical expenses once she's outside Canada any way but she should invest in travel insurance & make sure she informs the company she takes out insurance with she is pregnant

She ought to check & see if there is a reciprocal agreement between the Canadian health service & the Irish health service that will cover her expenses in the event that she can't return to Canada before the birth. If she does have to give birth in Ireland then she won't be turned away from a hospital but she will be billed for her medical expenses - healthcare is only 'free' to those who fulfil the residency requirements and/or pay into the system for it

In terms of nationality, the Republic of Ireland no longer has birthright citizenship. In order to claim Irish citizenship, any child born on the ISLAND of Ireland after January 2005, the parents must be either Irish, British or have a significant legal tie of 4 years or more. If the parents can't fulfil these criteria then the child must take the nationality of the parents. So if your aunt or her partner is an Irish citizenship then the child will have dual citizenship, if she and her partner are only Canadian citizens the child can only take Canadian citizenship.

If she does wind up in a position where she must give birth in Ireland but it will result in her overstaying her visa, she will need to contact the Irish Immigration & Naturalisation Service as she doesn't want to find herself in a position where's she flagged as an overstayer.

The child will also require a passport to return to Canada.

Flying to Ireland with 13 month old...Any suggestions?

gengirl

My husband and I are traveling to Ireland with out 13 month old... Should we purchase a separate seat for her? Or should we just hold her? Its a long flight from Georgia! I have heard you can bring your car seat on board and put it right in the seat.. Is that true? I need some suggestions... thanks!!

Answer
I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5). Here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me and I hope will help you:

1.) You will need to have all your baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of her notarized birth certificate with you. Since it will be an international trip, you will need a passport and possibly a visa for your child as well. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

FAA regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly free of charge as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat). You will need to inform the airline ahead of time that you will have a small infant traveling with you.

The Flight Attendants should place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Because of the length of flight, the Flight Attendants should also give you a bassinet that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device.

2.) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit. It will also help your child (and you) to sleep better.

A CRS is a hard-backed child safety seat (car seat) that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use.

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

3.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing you can do to help with the ear popping, is if your child is nursing, nurse her. If she is not nursing, give your child a bottle to drink (formula, water, juice- it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard (as long as your child is with you), do not worry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food onto the plane with you. If you are also starting to feed your son cereals, bring some that you just need to add water to. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

Another trick is that if your child is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to nurse or drink, gently rub her neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

4.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your child, such as a few books, toys, a portable DVD player with a few movies, and one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal.

You might also consider going to the store and letting your child pick out her own carry on bag and a few inexpensive toys that will be used only once on the plane. Be sure to pick out a few toys without your child seeing so that she has an extra surprise when she opens her carry on.

5.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case she gets sick, spills something on herself, or in case your luggage gets lost.

6.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Baby nail clippers and scissors are not allowed though. Just remember the new regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use.

You should be respectful of other passengers and always change your child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small.

7.) Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

It is a good idea to have a check-up with your doctor before leaving to make sure your child is healthy enough to fly. If she has even a slight cold, the pressure in her ears during take-off and landing (even if you do the precaution methods) could leave her ears aching for days after the flight.

Most doctors recommend that if anyone is sick (such as being stuffed up or already having an earache), not to take the flight because of the potential damage to the ears. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if they are sick because of this danger.

8.) Bring any medications that you might need for your child should she get sick or that she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

9.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.

a simple travel system/buggy with car seat?

Where can I get a simple pushchair with car seat/2 in1.

First: A simple pushchair with car seat, a few years ago that was all there seemed to be you had a pushchair suitable from 6 months and a car seat on top which balanced on the bumper bar and seat. If you look on pushchair guides under travel system that is what you get but rarely see something like that on the products page. I know about flat head syndrome but never have my baby in the pram for longer than an hour and that''s only once in a blue moon. Any where I could get something like that.

Second: A 2 in 1. They can be found quite easily on a baby website now but I don't want a carrycot and a pushchair, I want a chair that faces both ways but reclines so the baby can sleep (I don't want a 3 in 1 since the pram part is unnecessary)

P.S. Helpful if they are UK brands/stores

Thanks

Answer
I would check out http://JoggingStrollerRatings.com

They have a lot of info, reviews and comparisons on strollers. Also I believe all the stuff there can be found fairly cheap on Amazon.uk

Can anyone recommend a cheap twin buggy suitable for newborn twins?

Sarah

I am pregnant with twins and I have been searching the internet for prams for newborn twins they are all sooo expensive does anyone know of a cheap side by side carrycot twin pram or one with 2 carrycots? As this is doing my head in :) thanks in advance ...Sarah

Answer
First wheels city twin do a good twin pushchair, it can be used with carry cots and maxi cosi car seats to make it a travel system. Brand new it will cost £429.99 but that is only for the pram from kiddies kingdom it will cost £134.95 to purchase the carrycots. The seat units can face both ways which is great for when the babies have grown out their carrycots it means they can still face you.

http://www.kiddies-kingdom.com/ProductsDetails.aspx?item_id=488#

If you want a bargain then have a look on ebay, you will find the exact same pushchair but with all the accesories for a good price

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1311&_nkw=first+wheels+city+twin&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Good luck xx

P.S. My best friend has this pram for her twins and loves it.

where are the anchor points for installing a baby seat in a mitsubishi expressL300 campervan?

sapphire66

Lovely old campervan rear passenger seats collapse to make bed. Have newborn and wish to travel but can't put a large bar across back. Any other suggestions please.

Answer
I'm not familiar with your van specifically but I know a lot of vehicles don't have anchor points, especially if you mean the LATCH/ISOFIX system (called various other things in other countries) which only was required in all vehicles manufactured after 2002.

I don't know about the collapsing seats but check the owner's manual for your vehicle - if you don't have it, I'd go online & search or to your local Mitsubishi dealer & see if you can get a copy. Since you have a newborn, you should be using a rear-facing carseat & everything I've read indicates they work great with just the seatbelt if installed properly. Definitely worth a visit to your local police, fire department or any the other places that do free carseat safety checks.

Good luck!

Travel system strollers...?

Boston's M

I had the baby trend jogging stroller and travel system (it came with a car seat as well!) The harnesses had a major issue and it was no longer safe. I am weary to go with baby trend again and was wondering if some mommies could give me some advice on TRAVEL SYSTEM strollers they have used and recommend. We are looking for another jogger that is a travel system (Has car seat with stroller). Any advice would be great! Thank you!

Answer
My advice is to find a jogging stroller you really like with the features you want. All jogging strollers can hold a baby car seat- you do not have to buy a "system." A lot of them have a converter piece that you attach to the stroller that the seat will lock into. Plus, the infant car seats are all essentially the same. You won't find much variation there so you can pick whatever you would like too.

As for the stroller it's important to figure out what you intend for it. Are you going to run, jog, light jogging, power walking or just strolling? If you are going to run or jog it is important to get a quality jogging stroller and they are not all created equal! If you will be doing light jogging, power walking or strolling then save the extra cash you would spend on a jogging stroller and get a regular stroller (the less wheels the better.)

If you need any help, I have tested many, many strollers and owned quite a few. (I'm picky...lol.) Just message me and I will do my best.

What travel system do you have for your baby?

Q. Our son is 5 months old, before he was born we had one given to us, it's about 4 years old and kind of heavy and hard to get the "handle thing" to go up and down. I want to buy him a new one, a somewhat lighter one.

Just looking for ideas or if you have one that you really like. I dont want one of those $400 ones or anything though. I'm at work and Babies R Us website is blocked so I cant really look myself.

Links would be appreciated :)

Answer
This is the one I have:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8112228

It's nice, but too bulky. If I take it to the mall it's comfy for my son and easy to push, but can't fit in between the clothing racks very easily.

I would rather have a plain umbrella stroller. They are much lighter and more compact.

travel system or separate stroller/car seat?

carcar

i want to save money by not having to buy a new car seat for my newborn (she'll be coming in october)
i've been looking at travel systems but it looks like they usually only work for babies up to 20 pounds, while if i were to buy a stroller and car seat separate, it looks like they can accomodate babies up to 40 pounds...
i'm so confused and i really need advice on this
what should i buy before the baby comes!!
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=sc_pfc_r_4_0_1041968/602-1231252-8529404?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000E0IKT4

this is kind of what i was looking at, and buying the car seat that fits.

but really-- i'm so clueless and i don't have close friends or sisters or anything to offer advice and the last kid my mom had was in 89 so... her advice is a littttttle outdated!

Answer
If you're going to go with an infant seat (you could just skip that step and use a convertible designed for use with infants through preschoolers) then I would definitely check out the Graco Safeseat1. It will last your baby longer than any other infant carrier on the market, as it allows for taller and heavier babies, or, for smaller babies, will last a long time. It will last most babies for at least their first year. Most infant carriers are outgrown between 4-6 months of age, and then you have to move to a rear facing convertible car seat. With a Safeseat, some babies fit until they are 18 months old!

The best thing for you to do would be to visit a baby boutique (here we have Babyland and USA Baby) or Babies R Us and try out the seat in your car. The BEST car seat is the one that 1)fits your baby, you won't be able to tell this yet, but any infant seat should be fine on this count
2)fits your car - this is what you want to make absolutely sure of. Car seats are NOT universal.
3)will be used correctly each and every time. Make sure that you are able to easily install it correctly, or plan on leaving it alone. Make sure the carrier is easy for you to put on and off the base so that you'll be assured to do it correctly every time. Make sure the harness adjuster (the strap you pull to tighten the harness) is easy for you to use.

Those are things to look at, and then, once you've picked a particular brand and model, choose a pattern. Infant seats come in lots of patterns. Here's some things to steer clear of:
1)Used seats: gigantic no-no see links below.
2)3 point harnesses. Babies have managed to slip out of them, especially if it is a very small baby or a preemie. There becomes a huge gap between the crotch strap and the baby's pelvic area, with no belts over the hips to help make it fit better. Check the pics out in this thread on car-seat.org: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=14982&highlight=three+point+harness and here: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=21450&highlight=three+point+harness

ON the other hand, it really could be a savings to you to skip the infant seat altogether, and pick out a great stroller that will last you as long as you need it, since lots of the travel system strollers are kind of crappy in my opinion. You could go straight to a convertible car seat that can be used for a newborn through toddler. If you get one with high harness slots (where the harness is at the shoulders) and a high weight limit, you may even be able to get by with one seat for 4-6 years! Remembering of course, that car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture. Some GREAT choices:
Evenflo Triumph Advance (NOT the original Triumph, the Advance is different: rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 50lbs, will last the average child until 5 years of age. For a newborn, I'd go with the $150 version at Babies R Us, it has more supportive padding. This car seat is awesome. The harness has endless height adjustment, meaning, you put it exactly where it supposed to be, AND you get to move it without taking the seat out of the car, without re-threading the harness straps. No other car seat does this. And there is no pain in the butt strap to pull to tighten the harness - you tighten and loosen it using the knobs on the sides. There is a less padded version at Walmart/Target for $130. Wide open belt path makes it easy to install. And even once it is forward facing, it can still be reclined, great for when toddlers sleep. 17" top slots.
Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe. This seat is made by Britax for Fisher Price, it is a watered down Britax Marathon. Britax quality at less than half the cost! About $150, cheaper on sale online. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward faces to 55lbs. Easy to install. Lasts most kids 5-6 years. 17" top slots.
Britax Marathon - this one may not fit the tiniest newborns - though it is supposed to go from 5lbs like the others. You will need rolled up blankets on the babies sides as it doesn't come with any newborn padding. Pay extra for a Britax Boulevard or Decathalon and it comes with the newborn padding. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, top slots are 17" tall. Will last most kids 5-6 years. Many 6 year olds still fit in it. Also, it can be tethered rear facing (read instructions!) giving added security. Has built-in lockoffs so you never have to use a locking clip (trus me, they'er a pain!) which is needed in vehicles pre-1997 or w/seatbelts that don't lock. Easiest car seat I've ever installed in my life, no matter what car I put it in it goes in in under 2 minutes. Yes, its expensive, but worth every penny b/c of how long it lasts, and the added features that make it easy to use.
That's about it. I really wouldn't bother with any model that only goes to 40lbs. Kids should be kept in a 5 point harness as long as possible, and a seat that only goes to 40lbs will only keep the average child in it till 4 years old! No 4 year old should be using a booster seat! Save yourself buying another harnessed seat later.
Remember these things:
1) the best car seat fits your car, your child, and will be used correctly 100% of the time
2) kids should stay rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Not just to 20lbs/1 year. See links for why.
3) after being turned forward, kids should stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. Being graduated from each car seat stage is not something to be looked at with anticipation - each stage marks lesser safety.

Do a search on any of the seats listed above and you'll find sites that have them. The Evenflo TRiumph Advanced you can find locally, though. The other two are going to be cheapest online.
www.elitecarseats.com
www.albeebaby.com
www.babiesrus.com

P.S. If it were me - you can tell my preference is to skip the carrier - it is a total pet peeve of mine. People use those carriers too much! I see babies sitting in them everywhere BUT the car! Grocery stores, garage sales, church, nurseries, doctor's offices, its rediculous. They are car seats, or to be used on strollers. Even the instructions are specific saying not to keep babies in them for several hours. It's not good for a baby. Babies are meant to be held. Get a convertible seat, then take the money you saved by not having to buy a carrier and then a convertible, too, and use it to buy a sling. Babies LOVE them, you can breastfeed discretely in them, and it keeps your hands free. MeiTei carriers are great, as are ring slings.

UPPA BABY STROLLER? ANYONE?

A new day

Has anyone taken an uppa baby vista on an airplane?? Im planning on going to NY next week and was wondering if anyone has, did it come back all scratched or damaged at all? and what about the bassinet feature? I use the bassinet right now my son is only a month, will they except the bassinet part or do I need to use the actual seat???

Thanks!
wow I finally got some answers lol, I have posted this question about 5 times!

so thanks to you both for some answers

I would like to add that the bassinet feature I dont plan on bringing in the cabin but wanted to know if it could be checked at the gate along with the stroller, so the baby will have a bed when we get to our destination, also the carseat I just wanted to bring along so when our friend picks us up we will have one for the car ride..
fyi continental is garbage!! they dont tell you any info, they also failed to tell me that they charge for each bag none are free anymore, with a newborn you would think they would mention this knowing I will need extra baggage grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! the cost of my baggage way exceeds the price of the ticket!

ticket - $190
baggage both ways - $280
and that doesnt include an extra $100 each way if I want to bring the carseat!

RIDICULOUS!

Answer
I want to address something first - Regulations do not stipulate that a child needs to be in a CRS (Child Restraint System - otherwise known as a car seat), but the

FAA (Federal Aviation Administration - USA),
CAA (Civil Aviation Authority - UK),
JAA (Joint Regulatory Authority - Europe),
and CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority - Australia)

among others, and all airlines recommend children under 40lbs (18kg) have their own seat with a child safety device. In fact, many airlines offer half-price tickets specifically so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device.

I strongly advise using a CRS. I have always bought a seat for my children and used their car seats for them in the plane. It is the only way to ensure safety for your child - especially during turbulence. Depending on how bad the turbulence (and it can come on suddenly) anything not secured will go flying (I don't want to scare you, but I have seen it happen first hand). There are other reasons as well, many of which are not regularly spoken about (so as not to make parents afraid). The truth is, accidents and incidents with planes are rare, but when they happen, they can be more detrimental than an accident by car. Having your child in a car seat also makes children feel secure, is more comfortable for both you and your child, will help your child sleep, and gives you both the opportunity to relax a bit as well.

A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use. Here is a picture of what the sticker would look like: http://jamiehassen79.angelfire.com/flying_children_pics/FMVSS.jpg

Now about the stroller, all airlines differ on what kind of stroller you are allowed to take, but all allow an umbrella stroller. Continental does not specify as to which type of stroller they allow, so if I were you, at the very least I would print out the page that talks about strollers being allowed. If an agent questions you on it, show them to prove to you where it says the type you have is not allowed.
http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/infant.aspx

Gate checking means that you are allowed to use your stroller up until you board, and it will be waiting for you as soon as you deboard the plane. Here is how gate checking a stroller works:

When you first check-in, let the agent know you have a stroller. They will put a a luggage tag on your stroller just like they do the rest of your luggage, except you are able to use the stroller throughout the airport. They will also give you the claim ticket for your stroller like they do the rest of your luggage. If you plan on using a stroller bag, le them know and they will give you the tag to put on the bag later once you have your stroller securely inside it, but before boarding.

When you go through security, you will be asked to fold your stroller and place it on the conveyor belt to be X-rayed. Because of this, it is always best to make sure that any "extras" you have on your stroller are taken off so that they are not damaged and so that the stroller can pass easily through the X-ray machine.

When you are boarding, whether you board first, in the middle, or last, there will be an agent that will take your stroller from you. Again, make sure that any extras are taken off so they do not get damaged during the flight, and secure your stroller in the closed position. The agent will place the stroller in a special compartment under the plane for the duration of the flight.

When you exit your flight, the handlers will have your stroller waiting for you at the end of the jetway, near the gate. Should you have a bus arrival instead of a gate arrival, they will place the strollers on the ground near the buses for parents to collect.

I've been flying internationally & domestically with my children since they were each 2 months (now 9&6, 10 months and currently pregnant with #4). At least three trips a year are the children & I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. We do another 8-10 international & domestic flights a year as a family. Due to this, I have written a small article about flying with children that goes more in-depth, gives up to date security rules & regulations for the US, EU, UK, & Australia, offers tips & tricks for the travel, etc.

2mnth infant on plane w. play yard, travel system and bouncy..is this possible?

Corinne E

In dec. my son and I are going to be moving to New York & we're taking a plane just us two and I've been searching the web on what I can do with all of his things : Baby Trend - Nursery Center Playard, Deluxe Havenwood , Graco Quattro Tour Reverse Travel System and Bright Starts - Fun On Safari Bouncer. If it would even be possible to bring them with us. WHAT CAN I DO, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS AND IF SO HOW WOULD IT ALL PLAY OUT?

Answer
All these items must be shipped, or you can check them as cargo for an exorbitant price.
You don't really mean bring them on board the plane do you? ;-D
OK, now I am through laughing; just picture the other passenger's faces as you board with your complete nursery.

When traveling with a small baby, you will have your hands full. Just take your diaper bag, and the baby.
Buy him a seat, and bring a baby seat certified for use on aircraft. (there will be a sticker on the side certifying this.)

Arrive at the airport in plenty of time so you are not rushed or flustered.
When you get to the gate, advise the gate agent that you are with a small child so you can get priority boarding.

If nursing, do so during takeoff and landing to avoid baby's ear discomfort. Or give him a bottle.
You can take a bottle through security, just take it out and be prepare to have it inspected.

Can anyone give me advice on a stroller/travel system??

allybd76

Any advice? good/bad.... Any suggestions or experiences are appreciated.

We registered for the Eddie Bauer® Adventurer Travel System - Cambridge, but I read some reviews and many people have not given favorable reviews. PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer
Go to Babies R Us and test drive strollers.. We got ours as a gift a Graco Travel system.. The infant car seat was nice, but we didn't use the stroller very much.. Then when we had another baby two yrs. later we ended up buying a tandem stroller with a standing/sitting jump seat.. Joovy ! I love it.. Becasue it folds nearly flat and weights quite a bit less than our Graco. The infant seat adapter comes with it! I would suggest maybe buying a used or borrowing a Graco travel system if you can.. They are nice, but really heavy and take up a ton of room and they are a pain to fold... If it were me and I was looking for a stroller I would opt for getting a car seat that was for 5lbs-40lbs or 80 lbs and getting a regular lightweight stroller... Especially if you have more than 1 vehicle if you wanted a base for each car atleast for the graco strollers it's an extra $40... However, I got one at a garage sale for $10.. It's all dependant really on how much you want to spend and how much you are going to use it.... Look at ebay or Craigslist and see if you can get one used.. I'm selling ours with an extra infant seat/base for $70. The Graco's atleast retail for $170 for the travel system.... Good luck

Where can I find car seat/stroller travel systems for girls that are NOT pink and under $200?

Where can I find car seat/stroller travel systems for girls that are NOT pink and under $200?
I live in northern Indiana. I can order online (for stores that offer online purchases)

Answer
Things to consider. Why? I mean, except for transporting your baby in the car, a car seat should not be used for things like riding in the stroller, or on shopping carts, or things like that. It comes from the studies done in the last year or so that shows that a baby left to sleep or sit in an inclined position for too long can get into an oxygen lowered state. Ie, it's not good for them to be in an inclined position like a car seat for longer than 2 hours full in a day, until they're older than about 6 months old.

Now, since recalls done on strollers are far less than recalls done on car seats, you can get the stroller from someone selling second-hand (just doublecheck recall lists) and get a better car seat. The Chicco brand stroller, for instance, lays flat, making it usable from newborn on up. :) On Ebay, I can see a few for under $100 (make sure they say fully reclining.) I'm sure you could find some at Craigslist as well. :) Otherwise, you could consider using a baby chest carrier for the first few months until your baby is old enough (3-6 months) to sit at a slight incline, then you can get a stroller that nearly reclines all the way.

If you do that, my favorite travel system is the Baby Trend, at least to recommend to people. It's under $200, the car seat is one of the top safety rated (though the buckles are a pain in the neck I'll warn you now), and the stroller is a jogger that you can use as a stroller. I LOVE ours. They recline far enough back for about 2+months, so I wouldn't put a newborn in it, but if you can last the 2 months then it lasts to 40lbs. Only negative is that the basket is only rated to carry 5lbs, so you can't bring a huge diaper bag with you (or if you do you have to carry it.)

Shoot though. If you're dead set on a travel system, you can always find someone selling the stroller that goes with a travel system, buy that for a cheaper price, and then use the rest of the money to get the car seat, and get it cheaper that way. But I'm not a fan of travel systems. To me it seems like it ropes folks into thinking a baby should sleep in the car seat and it's just not safe.

Home networking guide for gaming please help.?

James

I am looking for a guide to setup an awesome home network for my house and I am also an avid online gamer. I just bought a house and I want to do it right with the fastest speeds I can get. I am not extremely tech savvy but I know the basics. If anyone can please help or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. thanks!

Answer
For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Wireless connections are not good for systems used for online gaming. Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

By nature, interference in wireless systems causes problems with smooth, consistent speeds. Your latency (ping) may be 30 ms and wireless interference could cause it to spike to 200 ms or more.

For online gaming low latency is very important.

Latency is the delay (ping time) in milliseconds that it takes the signal to travel to the server and back. The lower the number the better, but you'll definitely want a ping time of under 120 ms or you'll have major problems. Ideally you want less than 80 ms ping to the gaming server.

Ping time depends on distance and number of connections. Your connection may have to be routed through 15 or 20 hops (different locations) to reach the gaming server.

That being said,

What you really need is a fast, low latency Internet provider (ISP).

Depending on what types of Internet services are available in your area, a fast cable or fiber plan would be my first choice.

Your Internet bandwidth is shared among all of the users of your LAN. So any bandwidth others are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

It does little good to have a super fast home network connected to a slow Internet connection.

Remember, A super fast wireless router or Ethernet connection does not make your Internet faster.

A router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

The router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

WAN (Internet) speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps.

For example, If you pay for a 3 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 3 Mbps.

No router, WiFi or Ethernet connection will change your 3 Mbps Internet speed. This connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router.

If you have a 3 Mbps Internet plan and one user is utilizing 2.5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie that only leaves 0.5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

Fast wireless routers and connections are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP. The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

I run a ISP review site and blog, a couple of popular high power routers that my visitors have recommended are,

ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006QB1RPY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006QB1RPY&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

The Amped Line which includes Wireless routers, wireless extenders, and wireless access points. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-brandtextbin=Amped%20Wireless&linkCode=ur2&node=172282&tag=excharge-20

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Good Luck...

Baby Shower and Registry question?

and so it

I have a baby registry and pretty much everything in there is the cheapest I can find from $7 to $30. I probably wont know some of the people invited, so should I let them know I am registered or just my family and friends? What if I send out the invites to everyone with a small note that says:
"Gifts not required. However, if you feel so inclined and need an idea feel free to visit our registry at Walmart" or something like, "Gifts not required, but if you want to get one and need some ideas check out our registry at Walmart"
And the registry would say, "Thank you for taking the time to visit our registry. Please don't feel obligated to get anything as your presence is the best gift" Or any combination of the 3.
I don't want to sound like I don't want anything but I also don't want to come off as tacky or greedy. Also, what should I add to the registry or not add to the registry. Thanks in advance.
Im not throwing my baby shower, Im just doing the invitations.

Answer
When you registered they should have given you registry card. You include those in your invites. So people know where you are registered. Some people will buy you things that aren't on your registry, but most people buy you what's on there. I wouldn't put a note on the inside that says anything about gift not required. A baby shower is meant for people to buy the new expecting parents what they need for the baby. People realized that. If they don't want to buy you something, they won't. I added everything to my registry. Just in case someone wanted to buy it for me, you never know. Like, my grandma and 2 great aunts are going in of the bedding together (that was $180.00). Plus, at Babies R Us, whatever you don't get off your registry close to your due date, you get a 1 time 15% off. So I did everything, in case someone doesn't get me the more expensive things, most likely won't, but then I can get it cheaper. I added diapers, wipes, bedding, sheets, plain white onesies, a few toys, pack and play, travel system, bouncy seat, swing, all the decor for the room, mattress, bibs, bottles, bath stuff (baby tub, shampoo, first aid kit, thermometer), baby monitor, everything. A place like Babies R Us, gives you a guide to what you should register for (you can get the list online). They told me register for 3-5 gifts per person invited. Hope I helped! My shower is this weekend!

jESSiCA.

send me links to good, nice baby items. any item thankyou.

Answer
Baby is a loose term.. define baby? I've never been a wrap user because I just carried my child or had her in her stroller. But they're probably great for busy women who need their hands, have an older child or go out often and get tired of carrying a super light baby.

But I'll use baby as within the first year, and I couldn't have gotten through my first year without a swing, a jumper, or a walker. Later on, I definately needed toys that light up or make noise. And I wished I had just splurged on a travel system instead of getting everything seperately. Once she could sit up, I needed a cart cover. And I just tonight finally bought an umbrella stroller, for quick trips in and out, or for small stores or offices.

3 in 1 baby stroller question?

Harley

Are they any good? Are they worth buying or is it better to buy each piece of baby stuff separately? In case anybody doesn't know what I'm talking about it's stroller, baby car seat and carrying bed all in one.
Any help for a first time father would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
It depends. My cousin bought the Chicco travel system and she loves the car seat but hates the stroller. She always complains about it being too bulky and clumsy. So what I would do (I don't have kids yet so I can't go by experience) is go to the store and try out all the travel system's strollers if you find one that you like then look up all the reviews online (babiesrus.com amazon.com or target.com are a good place to start) about the car seat and the stroller. Some people complain about the car seats being too hot, or the harness cuts off baby's circulation. Anyway if you find one with favorable reviews then you can go ahead and get the 3 in 1 (or travel system)

I personally would get them separately. When I babysit for my cousin's baby I hate using her chicco stroller because the handles aren't adjustable and I am tall so I have to like hunch over when I push him in the stroller. Plus I would want a lightweight stroller that's easy to fold up.

I looked on consumer reports ( I have a subscription) and they recommend the Maclaren Techno XL stroller and the Chicco KeyFit infant seat. They don't have reviews for the all in ones.

Ok, does anyone have a good Travel System to reccomend?

kirakagome

After being let down by the fact that I cannot, puchase the Graco Alano 22 SnugRide Travel System from Amazon.com- as I live in Canada. I am quite unsure which way to go for strollers/travel systems.

My runner-ups include, 2) Graco Spree Travel System, and 3) Evenflo Aura Select, but, I'd like to get the top-rated Graco Snugride Infant Carseat, and I like this carseat, the most out of all of them. How does compatibility work? If I buy the car seat alone, how do I know which Strollers I can use it with?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Answer
We have the Baby Trend Expedition ELX travel system and LOVE it! I also have several friends that have the exact same one and say they love it too. It is a jogging stroller, but you don't have to go jogging. It is great at maneuvering and the car seat is so easy to get in and out of the car.

I am not sure about the buying a different car seat and stroller. :( Sorry...that is why I just went with a travel system.

Does anyone know where I can just buy the car seat and not the travel system?

My husband and I bought the Graco Safeseat from sears.ca (Sears Canada) Its very similar to the Snugride 32. They also have lots of 'seat only' car seats on their site.

which is the best car seat for 6 months plus baby?

newmommy

i bought the chicco travel system for my son when he was born. He is almost 6 months now and the car seat seems to be getting small. I am looking for a new one which can last me atleast for another 3 years or so. Which one will you recommend?

Answer
When shopping Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)children need to stay rear facing as long as possible.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
A)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
B)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
C)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
D)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight - 40" tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I'd have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And that's another misleading thing the box says - 5-100lbs. What the box fails to mention (you don't find out until reading the manual!) is that the harness only goes to 40lbs, NOT 100lbs! After 40lbs it must be used as a booster. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

The Compass Tue Fit, also sold as The First Years True Fit, is a great choice, too. Here's a thread talking all about it: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=37221&highlight=truefit Has 16.5 inch top harness slots, half inch shorter than the Britax Marathon and Evenflo Triumph Advance. Rear faces to 35lbs, forward faces to 65lbs, has built-in lockoffs, and you never have to rethread the harness to change harness height. The headrest is removable to fit better in smaller cars. $179 for the one cover Walmart offers it in, check Babies R Us and other stores for different covers at a little more expensive price.

The Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible seat is great, it is made by Britax, without all the frills. It's the same shell as a Marathon, but for less than half the price. $130 at Albee Baby online with free shipping, or at their eBay name, babysurplus. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward to 55lbs. Easy to use, fits in most cars. A small word of warning about these seats: they are now officially not making them anymore, so the date of manufacture is getting older and older, with many being delivered that are 6+ months old already. Since car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, this could make a difference to you, especially since its possible your child could fit in the seat for the next 5-6 years.

These are the best you can buy that will give you the most bang for your buck. As a single parent I'm always watching the budget - I have no money to speak of, and these are what I would buy. (My son has a marathon and is soon getting a Britax Regent). They will last the longest. I only wish someone would've told me all this before I had him, I coulda saved some money for the extra seats I started out with!

All seats in the US must meet the same safety criteria to sell, so technically they all are safe, however, if its hard to install, then it won't be used correctly and that makes it unsafe. Also, they only must meet the guidelines, some seats barely pass, some exceed them. Britax exceeds the guidelines and is easy to use.

travel system or baby carrier?

Omari's Yu

I have both, but which do you think is best or the one that I should use the most? My baby isn't here yet (I'm 26 wks), but I'm trying to figure out which should I use the most when taking walks, shopping, etc. Which would be easiest and why? Thanks!

Answer
It will depend partly on what's comfortable for you and your baby.

With baby #1, I didn't know about slings, and she didn't like the Snugli carrier we had, so I used the travel system a lot. The infant carseat was definitely convenient for the times that she fell asleep in the carseat because I could move her in/out of the car without waking her. The biggest problem is how quickly they outgrow that infant seat.

With babies #2 and #3, I used a sling most of the time. With baby #2, I loved my ring and pouch slings. With baby #3, I almost exclusively used my Mei Tai carrier -- probably 1-3 hours a day from the time he was born until he was almost a year old. We took walks, I went grocery shopping, I could cook dinner, etc. all while he rode (and often napped) on my chest or back.

I will say that the stroller is very convient for things like trips to the mall where you'll be buying things and need a place to push them. There were times that I took the stroller even though I knew my kids would mostly ride in the sling b/c it gave me a place to put their stuff.

If you have a good sling/carrier, start using it right from the beginning to get baby used to it. Then, you can figure out what works best for you on a case by case basis. Good luck with your new little one!

What is the best jogging stroller that will fit in a compact car?

Leslie

I am looking for the best bang for my buck in a jogging stroller to fit inside the trunk of a Honda Civic. I have been searching for a while now and have yet to find an answer to this question. I do a sizable amount of jogging along with trail hiking and would like to find something suitable to my needs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to those that have responded! We checked into the baby trend expedition and really like that one! For the last gentleman that wrote or anyone else let me go into a little more detail to maybe get a good idea! We want to use it just walking the lake or running the lake, disney, etc. reg stuff. But one thing we do is offroad trails, so we do need one that offers a smooth ride on gravel or dirt as well. Then of course the above mentioned that is also compact enough to fit in our trunk. I agree the BOB is the best my sis in law has one but a little more pricey then what I want to pay. Now if someone was giving me one, ok I'll take it, lol! But looking to spend between 100-200! Again thanks so far for the answers. Also to the last gentleman have you heard about the baby trend expedition that the first lady mentioned?

Answer
It depends on what your needs for the stroller are. If you're only going to use it for jogging yo could buy a stroller like the Instep Ultra Runner. The Ultra Runner has a fixed front wheel, weighs only 17lbs, folds up very compactly and is suitable for a child 6 months and older. You can buy them on Amazon for around $130.

For an inexpensive all around jogger you can look at the Baby Trends. Just do a search for advise on the specific model you are considering. Baby Trends front wheels tend to loosen up and require more maintenance than most models. Some models are worse than others, with the newest one we sell being the worst. The whole front wheel assembly has fallen off twice just being tested around the store. When you remove the footrest to fix it there is a label telling you how to fix it. I guess the label is cheaper than finding a better system.

A higher end all around is the BOB Revolution. I have spoken to around 100 people that own BOBs and have yet to hear a complaint other than it being more expensive than others.

From your description I would recommend the instep. Besides being economical, it has the least amount of resistance of all the joggers I have tested.

Yes I sell the Baby Trend Expedition and a few other Baby Trend Models. I would google the exact model of Baby Trend that you're looking at, because some of them have problems with their front wheels. You also can't go by price with the expeditions, as some of the cheaper ones are great, and some of the more expensive ones I wouldn't recommend.

Here's my buy/don't buy list:

The Expedition strollers sold as travel systems seem to hold up well, but I'm not a big fan of the Baby Trend Infant Carrier, but at $200 or less it may fit your needs.

Baby Trend Expedition LX Jogger Stroller - Sonic $130; has some front wheel problems, so expect to adjust it monthly, you'll need a phillips screwdriver, adjustible pliers and about 15 minutes.

Baby Trend Velocity Jogger Stroller - Matrix $180; I would never recommend this stroller. The front wheel assembly actually falls off. I have read reviews that said people don't realize the front wheel is supposed to come off via the quick release. That's not the problem, it's the whole front wheel assembly comes apart inside the housing and the wheel and fork fall off. This has happened twice while a guest has been pushing it around the store. If you try to overtighten the wheel to keep this from happening it becomes hard to turn an greatly increases the resistance of the jogger.

Baby Trend Expedition LX Jogging Stroller - Rocket $120; this is one of the Baby Trends I recommend most. They have changed their front wheel assemblies many times, and this seems to be one that has the least problems.

So my recommendation for you would be the Instep Ultra Runner for $130 on Amazon, or the Baby Trend Expedition LX Jogging Stroller - Rocket for $120 at BabiesRUs.

Hope this helps,

Alan

What is the best jogging stroller at an affordable price?

kldepalma

I am looking for a good jogging stroller. I have a 19 month old son and I have been using the Graco travel system stroller when I go walking jogging. I go almost every morning and bring my son with me. The Graco stroller is not ideal for jogging because it has 4 wheels and I struggle and get tired very easily when I start to jog. Anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
Jogging strollers can get pretty expensive. You can get the Baby Trend Expedition jogging stroller for a decent price. Its not the best jogger out there but great for the price!

Check it out: http://www.stroller-obsession.com/baby-trend-jogging-stroller.html

Looking for a second hand one is a good idea too, I second that!

Good luck!

poll: travel system OR light weight baby strollers?

Rodi= Yass

i like the travel system, but its so heavy and bulky even when its folded..
i like the light weight because its light!! but i still need a car seat... what should i do?
@ jen, i wish they were that cheap in my counrty :( the travel system costs around 480 $ and the light weight is around 130 $ :(
i cant afford both

Answer
OK, so I have both....Travel system and convertible seat and light weight stroller. Yes the travel system is conveienant when they are newborns and sleep alot, b/c the infant carrier can just be taken out of the car, without disturbing the baby. It's very nice that the infant seat secures to the stroller too. Especially b/c most light weight/umbrella strollers don't recline or have infant neck support. However.....Had I known that my son was going to outgrow his infant seat at 7 months, I would have skipped the travel system completly. My travel system was extremly expensive, Graco Quattro ($250), and now that my son is 1 year, it barely even gets used at all (the stoller stays at my moms now, just for when he goes there sometimes). I love my convertible seat, I have the Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 ($100 @ Costco or BJs) and never need another car seat again. The lightweight stroller I have is the Chicco Capri. It's a very good quality umbrella stroller, that wasn't cheap either ($80) It's not a flimsy plastic type. The handles are higher up,(my fiance is 6' 2" and doesn't have to be all hunched over to push it), the frame is metal, but it's still super light, and I love it. Once I finally started using that, I questioned myself why I was such a jack*** to be luggin the big heavy stoller around all those months. If you can't afford both, I highly suggest getting a good convertible seat and a nice lightweight stroller....Both of those will be used for MANY years, whereas the travel system will probably only really be useful for several months (at least the seat part anyway), you can use the stroller for many years, but they are very bulky, and you would still need another carseat anyway.
Hope I helped.

Here is what I have

how much do babies cost?

Q. on average, how much do babies cost a year? keep in mind that I KNOW how to budget and would only want to spend the big bucks on day care (if i had to), diapers and doctors. Everything else would be easy. So how does someone who doesn't make THAT much $$ afford a baby?

My boyfriend makes double what i make so he makes great money and would help.

Answer
Costs of Having a Baby
And you thought the home pregnancy test was expensive! The costs of raising a baby to age 18 costs between $125,000-$250,000 and that's not including college tuition! In your baby's first year alone, you can easily spend between $9,000-$11,000 (for diapers, formula, baby furniture, clothing, baby gear, etc.)

Two things that can save you money right off is deciding to use cloth diapers, using 2nd hand items and breastfeeding.

If you go back to work right away, childcare can cost as much as $3,000-$4,500 in your baby's first year, not to mention the higher insurance premium for adding an additional person. If you can stay home with your baby, you can save money.
Pregnancy
Don't forget about the delivery! It easily costs between $5,000-$8,000 for a normal vaginal delivery, up to $12,000 for a cesarean delivery and much more if there are complications. If you are covered by insurance, it may cover most of the cost.

more on infant budgeting
If you plan to use disposable diapers, plan on spending between $1,600-$2,300 by the time your baby is potty-trained. Expect your baby to go through at least 7-8 diapers a day on average and spending $80-$130 a month on diapers alone (especially in the first few months, when changes are more frequent.) Cloth diapering can be just as expensive as disposables if you use a diaper service. If you launder them yourself, you can save money. It is estimated that cloth diapering cost approximately $800-$1,100 by the time your baby is potty-trained (without the diaper service.)

For formula (up until your baby is one-year-old), expect to spend between $1,000-$2,300- depending on whether you use powder in a can or ready-to-pour liquids. Plan on spending at least $40 a week on infant formula. You can really cut your costs dramatically by breastfeeding for a year or more

Costs of Having a Baby
This is a break-down of the average prices for baby items (not all are a necessity.)

Smaller items: Washcloths, diaper rash ointment/powder, nail clippers, nasal aspirator, baby wash/lotion/oil/shampoo, pacifiers, extra nipples for bottles, bottle brush, breastfeeding pads, burp cloths/ lap pads, bibs, receiving blankets, car seat head support (for newborns), toys & more toys.

travel system or separate stroller/car seat?

carcar

i want to save money by not having to buy a new car seat for my newborn (she'll be coming in october)
i've been looking at travel systems but it looks like they usually only work for babies up to 20 pounds, while if i were to buy a stroller and car seat separate, it looks like they can accomodate babies up to 40 pounds...
i'm so confused and i really need advice on this
what should i buy before the baby comes!!
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=sc_pfc_r_4_0_1041968/602-1231252-8529404?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B000E0IKT4

this is kind of what i was looking at, and buying the car seat that fits.

but really-- i'm so clueless and i don't have close friends or sisters or anything to offer advice and the last kid my mom had was in 89 so... her advice is a littttttle outdated!

MeiTei carriers are great, as are ring slings.

travel system vs. separate car seat & stroller?

Kalyy

whats your preference?

Answer
Separate car seat and stroller.

A travel system is a car seat that comes with a particular stroller. The stroller typically is larger than a normal stroller because it has to hold the car seat without tipping. The car seat sits on the stroller, increasing the time that the baby spends in a car seat... and while a car seat is the safest place to ride in a car it decreases oxygen levels for a baby to ride in there long and it's not a recommended sleeping surface. I have never seen a stroller that was easy to maneuver and was lightweight with a travel system... and that's because they HAVE to be sturdy and hard to tip to hold that car seat on them.

I don't have a problem with a baby-bucket/infant car seat, there are situations where they are very useful (extreme weather, mosquitoes and other bugs, very small babies, etc.) Where I live, it gets very cold and we used an infant seat but kept it in the car. You are not allowed to put a baby in a car seat with a coat on, but you can put them in layered thermal outfits. The coat will compress in an accident and the baby could slide right out. With layered clothes though they're warm and it won't compress. I didn't have a problem with putting him in his car seat while it had been sitting out in the cold, but if it was very cold then I warmed the car up before taking him out there. We used a baby carrier (Ergo) and he preferred that over being in a car seat once we got to a place, it was much warmer against mommy than being left in his seat.

But I don't see why you have to have a stroller come with the car seat. Ever.

My favorite combination is for someone to get a moby wrap, ergo, or some other baby carrier that snuggles the baby to them, get the car seat they want and that will fit their car, budget and baby, and then put off the stroller for a few months. At 4-6 months old, the baby can fit in any stroller and sit up so it's not an issue... and mom can get the stroller that suits them for the next few years instead of the stroller that suits the car seat.
