Help With Baby Stroller?

7-Up

I need a little help with choosing a new baby stroller for my first born in June. I've looked around and their are so many options so I wanted to get advice from mothers who are really happy with their stroller.

Here's what I'm looking for- A all-in-one car seat/stroller, I really tend to gravitate towards the more modern looking ones (jogging strollers). My baby is going to be a girl, however Im not looking for a pink stroller or anything really girly, but a pattern with cars and trucks on it won't work either. I would really like to stay in the $200.00 or under range.

Any Advice! Thanks Everyone!

Answer
well you can't get an all in one with a jogging stroller...the Graco Travel Systems are really nice and have tons of patterns to choose from.

This is mine, but not available anymore http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2400883

What baby items did you find to be the most & least useful?

Malia's Mo

We just spent 2 hours in Babies R Us registering for my baby shower and we have over 200 items. I know I'm not going to get everything, and it was mainly just to show various gift options, but what items are absolute musts and what items can wait? This is my first baby so I haven't been able to test anything out yet. Thank you! =)

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Can anyone recommend a good travel system for a newborn?

Due April

Stroller and car seat in the 200-500 dollar range. Available in canada.

Answer
The Graco Quattro system is great. Its easy to use, light, and very well made. I got one 4 years ago, and am now using it for my second child. They sell them at Toys r Us, in store, and online, and also at Sears. Itsz an amazing system. Bout $350.00 Can..You can't use a jogging stroller till baby is 6 months old as they are too hard on their necks.

Ok, does anyone have a good Travel System to reccomend?

kirakagome

After being let down by the fact that I cannot, puchase the Graco Alano 22 SnugRide Travel System from Amazon.com- as I live in Canada. I am quite unsure which way to go for strollers/travel systems.

My runner-ups include, 2) Graco Spree Travel System, and 3) Evenflo Aura Select, but, I'd like to get the top-rated Graco Snugride Infant Carseat, and I like this carseat, the most out of all of them. How does compatibility work? If I buy the car seat alone, how do I know which Strollers I can use it with?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Answer
We have the Baby Trend Expedition ELX travel system and LOVE it! I also have several friends that have the exact same one and say they love it too. It is a jogging stroller, but you don't have to go jogging. It is great at maneuvering and the car seat is so easy to get in and out of the car.

I am not sure about the buying a different car seat and stroller. :( Sorry...that is why I just went with a travel system.

Travel System vs. Stoller & Baby Carrier?

Megan W

I am due to have Baby #2 (boy) in Nov and Baby #1(girl) will be 18 months old. I am needing to know would it better to invest in another travel system or just simply buy a baby carrier for NB and a top rated stroller for 18 mo? I'm not really a fan of double strollers, but then again I've never used one. With that said, I will be having the baby in the winter and in Ohio so I'm sure I won't be out jogging or walking with a NB in the cold but I would like to know what would be a better investment.

Thank you in advance for you help

Answer
I would get a pram for the baby that has a toddler seat attatchment. Your daughter will more than likely still need the pram after bubs has grown out of the carrier.

Best infant car seat brand/travel system?

I'm thinking graco and already have graco travel system but just wondering if I made the wrong choice this is my 1st child and have no experience with car seats. Should I get a convertible?

Answer
The Gracy Snugride 35 actually was rated one of the best infant seats on the market. The Snugride that goes from 20-22lbs actually are fine as well. The problem tends to be that babies outgrow them before 2 years old, and the tests say that a baby should rear-face to 2-4 years old (4 years old according to most of the research.) Now if your car seats are already in use, then I'd say just keep using them. They're safe, but you'll probably have to buy a new one in 6-8 months. A convertible gives you the ability of using the seat hopefully for the next 6 years and keeping them rear-facing longer (also after 6 months, when the baby is sitting up, they're more comfortable.)

I don't like travel systems as much because the strollers packaged with them tend to be heavy and hard to push. Plus, SIDS recommendations are that your baby sleeps on a flat surface not at a tilt. Car seats basically are the best place for a baby in the car, but when you take them out of the car you shouldn't keep them in a car seat. So a stroller that lays flat, or a chest carrier/sling you can use is safer for the baby to be in. And remember that an infant seat cannot sit on a shopping cart. Shopping carts (and car seats) are NOT made for that. Also, when you take an infant seat out it increases the weight of your baby by whatever the seat weighs, 20lbs sometimes, and it can really hurt your back hauling a bucket around like that. After your baby is 4-6 months old you can get a stroller that sits them up more safely (they're sitting up on their own more by that point) and are much easier to push.

If you have the money, I prefer the Britax-70 line. They rear-face to 40 and forward face to 70lbs, and I like the fact that Britax will replace your seat if there's an accident, but also that they guarantee it's safety in a small accident (most other seats require you to replace after a small accident as much as a large accident. Since Britax tests at higher impacts, they can guarantee it's safety after a short accident.) I like how this line actually has a steel bar on either side, and each is independently latched to the car's Latch system, plus the fact that it allows anchoring even rearfacing. Anchoring is when the top of the car seat is tied down to the floor of the car. In an accident where the seat belt fails or the latch fails that anchor can keep the seat in place.

With my children, I used a Graco Snugride for my first, and a Graco Snugride 35 for my second. With my first I hauled the seat everywhere and just about broke my back and arms. :P The stroller was a monster to deal with (and actually got recalled.) She was switched to a Britax Decathlon at 16 months about. Because of fitting issues, we didn't go directly to the Britax with my second born. With my second, we got the Snugride 35 and left it in the car, taking him in and out, using an Ergo carrier. That was far more enjoyable and when he was crying or teething I could put him in the Ergo and bounce on my exercise ball or do things around the house and he'd calm down and sleep. If I was at church or something I could put him in the Ergo and walk and he'd fall asleep. It was far better for both of us. At about 10 months old, I put him in a Britax Boulevard 70 and we tried it on my newborn preemie nephew and he fit it as well. I'm impressed at the changes, and like it a great deal. If/When I have a third, we will go immediately to a Britax Boulevard 70 (or whatever has been updated.) They're more expensive, but should last the full 6 years until it's expired, and I have no complaints.

Note: I don't want tan or beige or light green as they are more of a neutral, I want something like RED, ORANGE, OR RED/BROWN...SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

Answer

9 months old baby travel in plane?

Sword

Can Moms tell me how let her sleep comfortable without a bassinet pls? It is a 15 hours trip. THXS!

Answer
I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5). Here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me and I hope will help you:

1.) You will need to have all your baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of his/her notarized birth certificate with you. Since it will be an international trip, you will need a passport and possibly a visa for your child as well. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

FAA regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly free of charge as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat). You will need to inform the airline ahead of time that you will have a small infant traveling with you.

The Flight Attendants SHOULD place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Because of the length of flight, the Flight Attendants SHOULD give you a bassinet that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during take-offs, landings, or turbulence).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device.

I fly international flights all the time, and trust me, you will get tired from holding your baby for such a long flight, and your child may become fussy. Try holding your child for that same amount of time while sitting on the couch. If you can do that without any problems, then you'll be fine on the trip. If you can't, then you definitely need to ensure a bassinet for your child or a CRS.

2.) I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit. It will also help your child (and you) to sleep better.

A CRS is a hard-backed child safety seat (car seat) that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft.

This website talks about approved CRS devices and their ratings: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

3.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing you can do to help with the ear popping, is if your child is nursing, nurse him/her. If he/she is not nursing, give your child a bottle to drink (formula, water, juice- it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard (as long as your child is with you), do not worry. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food onto the plane with you. If you are also starting to feed your son cereals, bring some that you just need to add water to. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

Another trick is that if your child is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to nurse or drink, gently rub his/her neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

4.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your child, such as a few books or toys, and one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal.

5.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case he/she gets sick, spills something on him/herself, or in case your luggage gets lost.

6.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Baby nail clippers and scissors are not allowed though. Just remember the new regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use.

You should be respectful of other passengers and always change your child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small.

7.) Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

It is a good idea to have a check-up with your doctor before leaving to make sure your child is healthy enough to fly. If he/she has even a slight cold, the pressure in his/her ears during take-off and landing (even if you do the precaution methods) could leave his/her ears aching for days after the flight.

Most doctors recommend that if anyone is sick (such as being stuffed up or already having an earache), not to take the flight because of the potential damage to the ears. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if they are sick because of this danger.

8.) Bring any medications that you might need for your child should he/she get sick or that he/she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making him/her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

9.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me

Laurah<3 .

Hi :)

So im having a baby. I have a long time yet as im 4 months. But im one of those people who like to be organized. Im going to be a first time mum at 18 and pretty worried i will forget things my baby will need. I don't have a budget as im going to buy a few things each month. Im doing a checklist. But id like to no what you had for your new borns? i will write down what i have on my list already. If you have any suggestions or anything please say so as everything is welcome.

Cot bed (from birth to 5 years)
Moses basket (i will be using this for the first 4-5 months i think)
Changing mat
Baby bath
Electric steam sterilizer
Bottles, teats and soothers
Vibrating bouncer (plays sounds with a toy bar)
Car seat (birth to 4 years)
Cot bedding and moses basket bedding
Highchair (for when the babies older)

That's all i have so far. Not including clothes and nappies, baby wipes and milk.

As for clothes...how much is a decent amount? My mom had tons of clothes for my sisters and never used half of them. I do not want to be like this but i also don't want to run out.

Vests
Baby grows (with and without the feet)
Booties
Scratch mittens
Bibs
Hats
Socks

BQ. what sterilizer is the best in your opinion? I have been reading up on steam sterilizer, microwave sterilizers, cold water sterilizers. im just so confused, i have no idea what to think. This is the one i was thinking about getting. any opinions? and which would you suggest?

.Shampoo.
.Conditioner.
. Baby powder.

She got herself :

Okay that's the first lot off the top of my head.
For the clothes we brought tons ! i advise going to a car boot or something where the clothes are very cheap.

But i'll try to remember everything.... edit back

Okay got it :)

.

what pram do you have for your baby ?

just curious and whats it like is it any good ?

Answer
I bought a Graco travel system, the one where the infant car seat can be attached etc. While it's a really well made pram i wouldn't buy another like it. It's far too bulky and really heavy, plus it barely fits in the boot of my car. For me it wasn't really worth the expense. In hindsight, i'd definitely have bought a less bulky one.

Review on the Graco Alano Travel System - Melanie?

Q. I would like to get this travel system for my baby. She's due April 11th, 2012. Pros and Cons on this travel system ? Thanks!

Answer
I have that set and I love it. The stroller is easy to open and close, it's smooth to push and easy to click car seat in and out of both the stroller and the base in the car. It's easy to use and adjust. I have no complaints about it.

It's also really easy to clean if baby spits up or anything too.

should i go for the travel system or the light weight stroller?

jasmine w

im 5 months along and im starting my registry, i am having trouble on decided what stroller to get. I want something that's light weight seeing as though i don't have a car and i will be traveling by bus all the time. I also want something that my child can get a real use out of... the particular model i say at babies r us is fine up to 40 pounds. So will i need another stroller after that? The heavier travel systems seem to last longer but will be very inconvenient. Also im 6 feet tall and i hate umbrella strollers and things that will make me strain my back.
i want something that will really accommodate me, and have the best safety for my child. I just don't want to constantly keep buying things i don't really need please help soooo overwhelmed

Answer
You might try the Britax B-Agile or the Baby Jogger City Mini. Both are light weight, fold quickly and easily, and can accommodate an infant car seat for those first six months.

If you're going to get the City Mini, wait til 2012 to get it because it is getting a huge number of improvements in its features. If you want to buy before 2012, then get the B-Agile because it has all those improvements already and is, in my opinion, a superior product.

The reviews of these two strollers include video, measurements, lots of photos, descriptions and testimonials as well as where to find a great deal.

Best travel system?

Q. I am going to buy a travel system for my baby. (has a car seat, and stroller combo) I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice as to which ones are the best? I was looking to spend around $150-$200.
Forgot to mention that I'm having a boy.....don't know if that will help or not?

Answer
I am so glad I found this question. I have been eager to recommend the travel system we use to someone. It is the Chicco Cortina Travel System (Sahara is the style) http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2373617 and we LOVE it! (I think there are more colors too. Check in store for colors since they are not accurate online.) I had never even heard of Chicco. We ended up purchasing this system after we could not find an infant seat that would fit in our car. This was one of two that did fit. That is another recommendation I have; try the seats out in your own car before you buy. Babies R Us let me do this. We will soon be moving to a convertible car seat and I wish Chicco made those too! This travel system is such great quality. We noticed most other infant seats look cheap compared to this one. I was able to get the whole system for $200 plus tax. I used a few coupons to get it down from $279.99. Although, it IS worth that much. I had a coupon for (I think) $20 off a stroller over a certain price, one for 15% off any item, and I also used my remaining registry items coupon - an additional 10% off. Babies R Us has great coupons and they let you use a few at a time (read the fine print) so sign up on the web to recieve them! More about the travel system... I think my recommendation is based on quality, look, price, and enjoyment of use. The only downside is the small storage space underneath. I think it is enough room, but we have to take the infant seat off the stroller to get the diaper bag in and out. Don't know how other travel systems do in this area. That is such a small bother for me considering how much I love this product. So I don't mind at at all, plus I can throw the diaper bag on my shoulder if I want or use a smaller one. I love using this, and look for excuses to do so more often. Another tip for car seat purchases in general: check the foam thickness underneath the cover. I like to buy the thickest foam I can afford, as it absorbs the shock rather than your baby's body. Congrats Mom2be!
PS. The infant seat doesn't latch on to grocery carts... which is another thing that doesn't bother me. I always shop with someone so I can push the stroller and they can push the cart or vice versa. Just don't put him on top of the cart! I guess you will have to weigh those things and see which are important to you. Always check the store because there are so many great products that you would not otherwise know about. Be sure you really want whatever you are going to buy!

Best stroller/ baby travel system out there?

Mrs. Troy

I am due in July with my first baby, and I am having second thoughts about the stroller that I picked out. I picked out a Graco Stylus Travel System. The car seat holds up to 35lbs, and the stroller holds up to 50 lbs. I have read all of the reviews, and the only thing I am kind of worried about is how heavy people say that it is. Not pregnant, I am not a big person, only weighing in at about 120 (pre-pregnancy) and I'm only 5'2".

Do any of you all have any suggestions on a really good baby travel system? You can see the travel system that I picked out originally if click on the link below :).

I am having a baby girl by the way, but I would like to keep the stroller somewhat sex neutral just in case I end up having any more children.

Your input is greatly appreciated :)

Answer
There are a lot of things you can easily pick out by looking online. However, some things just need a first hand look. I think baby equipment is one of those things. It's helpful to see things in person before deciding on things like strollers, car seats, cribs, and travel systems. I suggest you go to several stores such as Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Target, Walmart, Sears, JC Penney, or any other local stores that carry baby items. Take some time to push the strollers and practice folding them. See first hand how heavy they are and how much room they take up when folded. Feel the fabric on car seats and check out how the latching system works. Sometimes looks alone just can't give you a good idea as to what you are going to get. After you find the items you like best than you can do some research to find the best web site to get the best price deal on exactly what you want. Personally, I don't think there is a best or really good travel system only because each one has their own set of pros and cons depending on what your wants and needs are. All are going to meet minimum safety standards, so it will take some investigation to find the one that suits you best.

I want a travel system for a baby girl under $250?

KayceeL

I want it very bright or busy, it needs to go BAM! I can't find anything I like. I'd prefer a pink or turquiose. Car seat and Stroller! I'm due in April and I can't find anything I like! Help

Answer
Have you actually gone to Babies R Us to "test drive" a travel system? You really should. You might get the color you love and then hate the stroller part.... I suggest you start with a travel system you've "test driven" then find the color you like.

Good luck.

For how many years is a typical baby travel system safe?

Erika B

We have an almost 4 yr old and are due with our second child in 5 months. We have everything we need, but a friend warned me against using our carseat and stroller again, becuase it may be out of safety regulation being almost 4 yrs old. It's a Chicco KeyFit 30, and had great safety ratings when we purchased it. Any one know typically how many years a travel system is good for?

Answer
Most car seat brands are 6 years from the date of manufacture. The KeyFit 30 is still considered to be a great seat. Flip it over and look for a "do not use after" date stamped into the shell. Once you're sure it's not expired, use the model number off the seat to search for a recall- for any seat. For the KeyFit, Chicco has only had one recall since 2001 and I don't think your seat was produced between the dates for the recall, here it is http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/childseat.cfm#mfg_anchor

Whats the best travel system,?

Renee

in your opinion? i want to have one, but need advice on people with them or anything just to know what you like best. If you have a website or anything that would be useful. It will be a boy and i want something tan or brown with blue or green.

Answer
I have the Graco travel system and I love it. The car seat comes with two bases and the stroller works great. It's a big system, but I found it held a giant diaper bag, the baby and lots of drinks and snacks.

Graco also has one of the highest safety ratings.

This is the one I have: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3420746

It comes in browns and blues.

Travel system? Stroller? Car seat? Convertable car seat??? Help!?

Evie

My husband and I are overwhelmed with choices. We are both graduate students and expecting our first baby in August. We need a stroller and we need a car seat, but we are puzzled. Is the travel system a must have item? Can we just buy a stroller and a convertable car seat? Do we have to bring a car seat in the hospital when the baby is born? Then, does it have to be a car seat for babies or we can use a convertable car seat? I hope I'm making sense. :) Thank you so much for your help!!!

Answer
First off let me say go with GRACO no matter which type of carseat u choose!!! They have a great selection, super safety ratings, and nice prices!

I always had the infant seats for my babies because u can take them out and into stores or any other place u need to go. U can set them down and have both hands free, plus u can move the baby without waking them! As far as travel systems you can get the set if u really like the pattern and save a little money too. U dnt have to buy a travel system though just get a car seat now cause u DO need one to leave the hospital (convertable or infant it dsnt matter). U can always get a stroller later.

Convertable car seats are nice but just don't offer the versitility that the infant seats do, plus when u take the baby out of the car you'll have to hold her because u have no where to set her. U can use the infant seats on store carts but their not the cleanest and sometimes the don't even have them! U could get the infant carrier and use it until the babys around 10 or 11 months then switch to a convertable one, just make sure u keep it facing the rear until ur little one is a year old.

Good luck with ur new baby!!! If go to gracobaby.com ull find all the info that u need, that's where I got mine!

What are your top ten baby products ever?

Expecting!

I am starting to shop for the new baby and i am worried i will forget something. What were your must haves? What was a waste of money and what do you wish you had but didn't.

Answer
1 - carseat (I like the travel system with stroller kind)
2 - baby carrier - I love the Ergo carrier but also have several others that seldom get used. A Moby wrap is nice for nursing though & good for newborns
3 - clothing of course & whatever type of diapers you plan to use (cloth or disposables)
4 - diaper changing table/station - ours is downstairs & it makes it so much nicer than going up & down stairs all day.
5 - breastpump - but I had to go back to work - it's not as necessary if you stay home & then of course all the stuff that goes with that...breastpads (I think Johnson & Johnson make the best disposables AND cloth ones) - Lansinoh cream for nipples, milk storage bags (they warm MUCH faster whether frozen or just refrigerated), bottles of some sort....my preference is Second Nature
6 - exersaucer - my first LIVED in this thing as soon as he could set up & still asked to get in after he could walk...LOL
7 - Boppy Pillow or Breastfriend - whether you nurse or not - it is a back saver!
8 - Swing - baby may or may not love it. My first hated the swing & never never took to it - but you can't know until you know & many babies love them. They will be a lifesaver if baby likes them for things like showering.
9 - Bumbo Seat - my first loved this thing & we used it until he didn't fit in it. He loved to eat there instead of the highchair..so we packed the bulky highchair up after a certain point & I don't plan to even bother getting it out this time. Our Bumbo has a tray & everything - so it's totally sufficient.
10 - Swaddle-me blankets. Both my babies have loved swaddling but I never got one of these until this time - now I own 5...LOL They are wonderful for a baby that likes swaddling!

Stuff we didn't need that we bought or were given:
With my first - the swing - total waste, same with the highchair
We bedshare with our babies, so I don't really need a bed for them that first year...but I do keep a bassinet for naps, etc. I bought a crib for my first after he was a year & attached it to our bed to give us all a little more room. We didn't need one or want one until then. The nice part is because I waited & just kept an eye out for a deal I got a nearly $500 crib for $99 ob clearance. You definitely don't need a bed in a bag for your crib. They recommend you don't use any bedding in with baby & also no bumper...so just buy the sheets & bedskirt as that is all you are supposed to use anyway. I didn't even do that - since it was attached to our bed I bought an extra twin bedskirt to match our bed & twin sheets. The I made the bedskirt work with tucking & safety pins & I use these: http://www.google.com/products?q=snug+sheets+clips&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=Gz7NS5SDA4WsNe_ciNMP&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CDEQrQQwAg to make the sheets snug. It's very easy.

What's the difference between a travel system and a convertible car seat?

Jillian Ir

The car seat you get with the travel system, is that going to last and turn into a seat you can use as your baby grows or is that only an infant seat? I am a first time mother and am trying to get everything I need, but this one has kind of stumped me.
Can I covertible carseat be used as a rear facing infant seat?

Answer
The seat that comes with a stroller is an infant only, rear facing only seat. Most infants outgrow their infant seat at 4-6 months, as most only go to 20-22lbs. and 26inches or so. The only one that is bigger is the Graco SafeSeat Step 1. Its made to hold up to 30lbs. They claim that 97% of infants will fit in the seat until their 1st birthday. A convertible car seat will do both rear and front facing. You 'convert' it front facing when the baby has reaches the limits for rear facing. NOTE: Keep babies rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!! Not just to 20lbs/1year. That is the bare minimum for when you can. Their bones are too fragile to properly withstand crash forces, and rear facing is the safest position.

The infant carriers are convenient, but quite frankly, a sling is a heck of a lot more convenient, and slings like the Maya wraps (and lots of look alikes) can be used in 4-5 different ways up to 40lbs! I HATE seeing babies constantly put in their carriers. Babies were meant to be held, not put in seats all the time. Also, infant car seats were meant to be used in the car or stroller - not everywhere else. Even the manual usually states: 'not for use in the house, boat, or anywhere else besides a passenger vehicle'. So, if you use them correctly, they really aren't all that convenient. I mean, have you ever tried carrying around a 15lbs baby in a carrier? UGH! Painful. A sling is easier and allows your hands to be free (much better for grocery shopping, dining, etc. you name it!) Also, babies like it better.

You don't have to have an infant carrier. Depending upon the size of your baby, you could put him straight into a convertible. If you're going to do that, spring for a convertible that has the infant padding in it, otherwise it may not work. That should be fine as long as baby is 5lbs or over. If you're really looking to cut costs, I'd cut the infant seat out of your shopping plan. You'll have to get a convertible when he outgrows the infant seat anyways, so an infant is an extra. The best convertibles are ones with high harness slots and high weight limits both rear and front facing. Here's some to look at:
Fisher Price Safe Voyage, up to 33lbs rear facing, up to 55lbs forward facing, 17" top slots. Made by Britax, without the bells and whistles at a fraction of the cost! $130
Britax Marathon/Decathalon/Boulevard: all 3 same shell, up to 33lbs rear facing, up to 65lbs front facing, 17" top slots. Decathalon and Boulevard have the infant cushioning. Britax seats have built-in lockoffs so you never have to use a locking clip again! Wide belt paths make it easier to use, too. Many seats can cut and scrape your hands when you try and install them. They sound expensive, but they last longer than most other convertibles. $269 and up

Sunshine Kids Radian65 and Radian80. Both rear face to 33lbs, front face to 65lbs/80lbs. Top slots 18". GREAT seat if it fits in your car. $199, I believe. Lasts a LONG time, saves on buying other seats.

So, if you're looking to save money, actually skip Walmart, they're seats won't hold many kids long enough because of low weight limits and low harness slots. If you've got a tiny child, it'd be ok, but for average or big kids it won't work. Kids should be harnessed AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! No 4-year-olds in boosters, please!

I'm expecting a baby in November and am currently looking around for a stroller. My husband is set on one with RUBBER wheels. I tell him this is not necessary but he insists. Where could we find such a stroller? We want a travel system and aren't looking to spend much over $200.

Question about Evenflo Travel System Strollers vs Jogging Stroller?

Momuvtwinb

I have a Evenflo Eurotrek Travel System and was wondering if anyone has tried an Evenflo stroller on gravel and how did it perform? My boys are fixing to start baseball again and I'm wondering if a jogging type stroller with big wheels will be necessary as I plan on taking my 4 month old with me to practices and games as long as the weather permits in her stroller. Some of the ballparks are gravel and I was wondering if anyone has any advice.

Answer
Travel systems are way to bulky! I got the Citi Mini by Babyjogger. Its a 3 wheel stroller with bigger wheels and yet it is not a jogging stroller. Its meant for everyday use on concrete and gravel terrain. Its also pretty lightweight and collapses in half by simply pulling on the handle located on the seat. You can literally collapse it with 1 finger while holding the baby! I think this is the most awesome stroller and its fairly well priced at $219.99

Graco MetroLite or Chicco Cortina Travel System?

Aaron's mo

My husband and I are having our first baby and trying to decide which of these travel systems to purchase. Any suggestions, likes or dislikes from those own any of the two systems? Thanks

Answer
Well I have the Chicco one and I love it. Its handle goes 3 differnt heights so would be comfortable for you and your husband if you are different heights. I think it is so sturdy, i live up 2 flights of stairs so it gets bumped down them all and bumped back up with baby in carseat and shopping no probs. Its really smooth and steers even with one hand. I havent used the buggy part on its own yet because my daughter likes her carseat... But it looks nice and comfortable for baby. The car seat is dead easy to fix into a car, even a 2 door. And the pram fits in the boot of a 2 door no probs as well. I particularly love the parent tray that has the drink holder and a covered area. I use the covered area for my mobile and my house keys and they fit just nice!! I've been using mine for nearly 6 months, and I use it alot. I go walks, been on buses, in taxis and in cars. Its been folded and unfolded too many times to count and there has not been one problem with it so far. It seems to me its a good sturdy pram that will hopefully last me quite some time. I have th red and beige one and I really like it, its a nice shade of red, suitable for a wee boy or girl. My sister actually has the identical one, and I know she is really happy with hers as well. Theres actually nothing I dislike about it!!

What is the best stroller to buy for a new baby?

Kim B

I seen those travel system strollers but they are so bulky! Any suggestions? I am looking for something that is compact and easy to lug around- if that is possible. :) Thanks!

Answer
Aha! I can answer this one! I did tons of stroller research and I found the perfect one! It's the Valco Latitude. It is a 3 wheeler but not a jogger and it is only 17 lbs. If folds very small and is super light. The front wheel swivels or locks out. It has a nice, roomy cargo basket underneath. It comes with the attachment straps to add the carseat when baby is a newborn and when baby gets a little older the seat is super adjustable. Baby can sit almost completely upright to see the world or even lie completely flat for naps. It has a nice big canopy for sun shade and even comes with the wind/rain cover and cold weather boot! All the other strollers I looked at that were in the same category ended up being much more expensive because the accessories are sold separately. I paid almost $300 for the whole thing and it was worth ever penny! It is able to be used up till 50 lbs too! So you should never have to buy another one down the road. Also I like to travel a lot and its super light for gettin in and out of the trunk or on and off the plane etc. It has a telescoping handle too so if you are on the tall side it's still very comfortable to push. Very maneuverable, smart design, looks great! I can't say enough goos about it! Check it out online at: http://www.babystrollershop.com/valco_latitude_single.htm

I love it!!!

Can my Canadian partner apply for another visa during her 2 year Tier 5 Youth Mobility scheme visa?

Q. My partner is a Canadian citizen who has been in the UK on a tier 5 youth mobility scheme since April 2009. We have been together for around 3 years and we spent the first year traveling back and forth from Canada & Scotland to be together (I am a UK citizen). We have recently fallen pregnant together and we are planning on getting married in January 2011, with the baby being due around May. My partners visa runs out April 2011 (1 month before our due date) and we are wondering if anyone can give us any ideas about her staying in the UK to have the baby.

The youth mobility scheme doesnt seem to offer too much options from what I have read on the government websites so we are wondering if anyone out there has been in the same situation or if anyone else has a better knowledge than us.

We would be grateful if you could give us any guidance from the above information and let us know what our options are about my partner remaining in the UK after April 2009. Can we apply to have her visa status changed? Is she entitled by law to remain here to have the baby as I am a UK citizen? Any information/guidance anyone can give us will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Thanks for your answer Ozmaniac.

We are both older than 21 so that shouldn't cause a problem.

As the father of the child and myself being a UK citizen, why on earth would the person who is carrying my baby not be allowed to have the birth in th UK. Basically the government are telling me that I dont have any rights have the birth of my child in my homeland. Does that seem right? It seems very very steep to me.

This is one of the many reasons I have been thinking about leaving this country, never to return.

Answer
The YMS section of the UKBA website states:
"While you are in the United Kingdom under the youth mobility scheme, you are not allowed to switch into any other category of the points-based system or in to a visitor route."
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier5/youthmobilityscheme/eligibility/whocanapply/

Applying for permission to remain as the partner of a British citizen is neither on the points-based system nor is it a visitor route so after your marriage, there is nothing in the YMS restrictions to stop her applying to remain as your partner if all other requirements are met. You must both be over 21.
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/partnersandfamilies/partners/husbandswivescivilpartners/

Because your partner is subject to immigration control, she will probably need to apply for a Certificate of Approval to marry. The procedure and any grounds for exemption from the requirement are detailed on the following:
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/while-in-uk/marriageandcivilpartnership/

She has no entitlement to stay in the UK just because she is having a child with a British citizen and I can't see any other way for her to stay if she is under 21 and therefore ineligible to stay as your partner.

EDIT:
I know it's difficult to accept, but every country has the right to control as far as possible, who stays in that country and they do that by the issuing of visas to enable them to stay legally. If they simply allowed people who were part of a couple that was expecting a child to stay purely on that basis with little or no evidence of commitment to the relationship, the floodgates would open and every second student and visitor would be doing it. I know that Australia, Canada, the USA wouldn't allow her to stay unless she qualified for a spouse/partner visa and don't know of any other developed country that would be any different.

You intend marrying in January and your partner's visa doesn't expire until April so sorry, but I really can't see any problem. Just have her apply to stay on the basis of her marriage to a British citizen and she
will not only be able to stay for the birth but for as long as she wishes after that and, if I understand correctly the way things work in the UK, she'll even be able to have the NHS pick up the tab for the last stages of the pregnancy and the birth. Have I missed something?

EDIT:
My apologies for confusing the issue further, but it has just been pointed out to me (by Maggie, arguably the most knowledgeable authority on UK immigration on Answers), that elsewhere on the UKBA site, it states "there is no right to apply to live permanently in the United Kingdom (known as 'settlement' or 'indefinite leave to remain') if you are here under the youth mobility scheme under tier 5 of the points-based system.
You cannot apply for settlement from tier 5 and the time you spend in any tier 5 category will not count towards any settlement you may apply for in the future."
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier5/youthmobilityscheme/settlement/

I believe that the statement above is very ambiguous because applying for limited leave to remain for a spouse is not applying for settlement, but I confess that I'm no longer sure that your partner will be able to stay on as I suggested above. I think you need professional advice. Start with the UKBA, but be prepared to pay for advice from an immigration lawyer or agent.

Good luck to both (all!) of you - hope it all works out without too many problems.

What do y'all think of Africa now..?

Q. I read off the news that Africa is having a starvation a child at the age 5 is 20.2 pounds a 4 year old is 15.3 pounds and a baby is as light as a feather, The people have no water or food..I feel bad. What do y'all think..?

As much as it is a tragedy that people are starving, I would rather the issue be handled locally. First off. a lot of first world nations are going through an economic crisis. Perhaps African nations could put together a pan-African fund to help those people in poor condition.

A major problem is the leadership of a lot of Africa. They don't seem to want to help their own people, but are in favor of enriching themselves. I read a piece on Robert Mugabe who had already spent $20 million on travel this year alone.

Mugabe spends US$20 million on travel in 6 months

Figures published by a daily newspaper in Zimbabwe have revealed that Robert Mugabe spends an extravagant amount of money on foreign travel, gobbling up over US$20 million so far this year. According to the Daily News, that amount is âway beyondâ Mugabeâs US$15 million travel budget for the year.

In comparison the paper said Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputies have so far spent just US$3, 7 million, or almost three quarters of their US$5 million travel budget for the year.
Using statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the paper calculated that travel expenses for government officials were âenough to finance anti-retroviral treatment for almost 600 000 people for six straight months in a public health system.â

Also you have to question to yourself why this issue is being reported on. They want people to donate aid...but given the political instability of Somalia, there's no guarantee of aid reaching the people who need it. They need stable governments and some agricultural policy changes.

What are trusted brands for Travel systems, cribs, baby etc?

g (

So I'm looking at travel systems and cribs right now.
And I'm curious what do you think is the best brand?

I'm looking for it at different stores for cheap like Walmart, Target, Shopko.

I see Cosco, Graco, Evenflo, Safety first. What are the best brands you recommend or doctors recommend?
Also, what does it mean when it says use of 1 month and up? What should I use as a car seat before she is one month?

Answer
I have an evenflo travel system and have had no problems with it. When I switch to a bigger car seat I am planning on a Graco as I just like them better. I have a Graco playpen, a fisher price swing a stork craft crib (yes there was recalls, but tons of baby products get recalled all the time....most times because people dont use them properly) Honestly...most products you see in stores are good and safe. If they werent they wouldnt be sold.

Do you have a baby travel system?

Q. If so, which brand and what pattern? I am looking to get one and would like to know your opinions.

Answer
I have the Graco G's Galore. I've heard nothing but good things about Graco for years. G's galore pattern is different it reminds me of some designers patterns. I wanted something that would reflect myself and work well for my baby.
