poll: travel system OR light weight baby strollers?

Rodi= Yass

i like the travel system, but its so heavy and bulky even when its folded..
i like the light weight because its light!! but i still need a car seat... what should i do?
@ jen, i wish they were that cheap in my counrty :( the travel system costs around 480 $ and the light weight is around 130 $ :(
i cant afford both

Answer
OK, so I have both....Travel system and convertible seat and light weight stroller. Yes the travel system is conveienant when they are newborns and sleep alot, b/c the infant carrier can just be taken out of the car, without disturbing the baby. It's very nice that the infant seat secures to the stroller too. Especially b/c most light weight/umbrella strollers don't recline or have infant neck support. However.....Had I known that my son was going to outgrow his infant seat at 7 months, I would have skipped the travel system completly. My travel system was extremly expensive, Graco Quattro ($250), and now that my son is 1 year, it barely even gets used at all (the stoller stays at my moms now, just for when he goes there sometimes). I love my convertible seat, I have the Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 ($100 @ Costco or BJs) and never need another car seat again. The lightweight stroller I have is the Chicco Capri. It's a very good quality umbrella stroller, that wasn't cheap either ($80) It's not a flimsy plastic type. The handles are higher up,(my fiance is 6' 2" and doesn't have to be all hunched over to push it), the frame is metal, but it's still super light, and I love it. Once I finally started using that, I questioned myself why I was such a jack*** to be luggin the big heavy stoller around all those months. If you can't afford both, I highly suggest getting a good convertible seat and a nice lightweight stroller....Both of those will be used for MANY years, whereas the travel system will probably only really be useful for several months (at least the seat part anyway), you can use the stroller for many years, but they are very bulky, and you would still need another carseat anyway.
Hope I helped.

how much do babies cost?

Q. on average, how much do babies cost a year? keep in mind that I KNOW how to budget and would only want to spend the big bucks on day care (if i had to), diapers and doctors. Everything else would be easy. So how does someone who doesn't make THAT much $$ afford a baby?

My boyfriend makes double what i make so he makes great money and would help.

Answer
Costs of Having a Baby
And you thought the home pregnancy test was expensive! The costs of raising a baby to age 18 costs between $125,000-$250,000 and that's not including college tuition! In your baby's first year alone, you can easily spend between $9,000-$11,000 (for diapers, formula, baby furniture, clothing, baby gear, etc.)

Two things that can save you money right off is deciding to use cloth diapers, using 2nd hand items and breastfeeding.

If you go back to work right away, childcare can cost as much as $3,000-$4,500 in your baby's first year, not to mention the higher insurance premium for adding an additional person. If you can stay home with your baby, you can save money.
Pregnancy
Don't forget about the delivery! It easily costs between $5,000-$8,000 for a normal vaginal delivery, up to $12,000 for a cesarean delivery and much more if there are complications. If you are covered by insurance, it may cover most of the cost.

more on infant budgeting
If you plan to use disposable diapers, plan on spending between $1,600-$2,300 by the time your baby is potty-trained. Expect your baby to go through at least 7-8 diapers a day on average and spending $80-$130 a month on diapers alone (especially in the first few months, when changes are more frequent.) Cloth diapering can be just as expensive as disposables if you use a diaper service. If you launder them yourself, you can save money. It is estimated that cloth diapering cost approximately $800-$1,100 by the time your baby is potty-trained (without the diaper service.)

For formula (up until your baby is one-year-old), expect to spend between $1,000-$2,300- depending on whether you use powder in a can or ready-to-pour liquids. Plan on spending at least $40 a week on infant formula. You can really cut your costs dramatically by breastfeeding for a year or more

Costs of Having a Baby
This is a break-down of the average prices for baby items (not all are a necessity.)

Smaller items: Washcloths, diaper rash ointment/powder, nail clippers, nasal aspirator, baby wash/lotion/oil/shampoo, pacifiers, extra nipples for bottles, bottle brush, breastfeeding pads, burp cloths/ lap pads, bibs, receiving blankets, car seat head support (for newborns), toys & more toys.

Going through pregnancy and birth is very costly, but worth every penny!

Crib with mattress- $160-$750
Crib bedding set- $35-$270
Crib blankets (4-6)- $8-$40 each
Fitted crib sheets (2)- $8-$20 each

Help! Baby sling/travel system/stroller dilemma!!?

MJ MCK

Hi,

My first baby is due in early July, and I'm wondering what to do about a stroller. I'm leaning towards using a sling most of the time, and wondering if I would need to buy a travel system with the car seat, or just a stroller and car seat separate...wondering if I could please have the opinions of parents with experience with these?? Thanks!!

Answer
We got a travel system because everyone told us it was essential. We found out that it was not essential! It was handy for the first two months, thereafter it was a huge pain. If we have another baby I will get a convertible car seat and use a wrap to carry the baby in. We bought a Britax Marathon when our daughter was 10 months old. I wish we would have started with one, they are 100% better than the Graco Snugride we had. The Britax seats are much better quality and construction and way easier to install. I am not sure I would use the Marathon from birth, we would probably get the Boulevard instead, since it has a body pillow for smaller babies.

What are some quality value priced baby travel systems?

I need to purchase a sturdy, attractive stroller/ car seat for a newborn that won't go over $150.00. Does anyone know of specific travel systems that fit this category? Thanks

Answer
I got a practically brand new chicco travel system on craigslist for $100.00 and that included the carseat, 2 bases, and the stroller

Typical cost of baby items?

jenn_LT

I'm writing a paper on newborns and cost. I've been researching, but I'm having some time figuring out figures for common large baby items. Such as crib, changing table, car seat, stroller, diaper bag, etc. I know the costs vary alot depending on location and quality, but what is a general price range per item? Not the cheapest of the cheap, but not gold plated either. What do you think is the average spent total?

Thanks!

Answer
Crib set including crib, changing table, and dresser $300-$400
Carseat $100 but can go as high as $200+ mine was $125
Stroller $100-$150
Travel system (stroller and carseat combined) $200-$250
Baby bedding $250 (I want to know where you buy beding for $50)
Matress $75-$100
A good unexpensive diaperbag $50
box of 92 count diapers $18
22oz can of formula that last maybe 5 days $25
big box of wipes of 1000 count $10

should I have a baby shower or not?

mommy lita

I am due in February 22, 2009 so the baby shower would have to be soon. She told me to pick either the baby shower or for her to use the money she has for the baby shower to buy things I need for the baby like the traveling system and the bassinet I want. What would you pick?

Answer
I would pick getting the things I want, just because at baby showers (usually) people dont go all out to get a $100-300 bassinet or traveling system. People usually stock you up on diapers, clothes, bottles, bibs, etc. However, you do get a lot more things at baby showers, and its just a fun time to bask in the attention you get while youre pregnant. Free food too! If youd really like to have the shower, I suggest you hint on the invitations that youd appriciate gift cards or money towards the items of your choice(or just put down a registry).

What is a safe and lightweight stroller that is compatible with an infant car seat.?

baby travel systems for 100 on singapore maps and information

A travel system is my last option. I was looking for something less bulky and lighter but also compatible with an infant car seat.

Answer
Why do you need the infant seat with it? An infant seat is the safest place for a baby to be in the car, but once out of the car it's not recommended to leave them in the seat for long. Instead you should carry the baby, lay it on a flat surface if they're sleeping, or even use a chest carrier (like the Moby Wrap or Ergo or something like that) but not to leave them in the car seat.

Lighter strollers aren't usually compatible with infant seats because the infant seat is difficult to have on top without tipping over. So they have to have a sturdy bottom so they're less likely to tip. If you want a lighter stroller, then consider that in 4-6 months your baby will usually be able to go into most any stroller without the car seat at all. Is it worth it to buy a stroller you're going to use only for half a year? Just get the stroller you would prefer and forget using it with a car seat.

I would look at these links and seats. The Graco Fast Action lite lays flat, and runs for a little over $100, goes to 50lbs for the child, and the stroller itself weighs just over 20lbs. The Graco Trekko runs from $150-200 and again goes to 50lbs. It lays completely flat, but also will work with a snugride, and the three wheels are easier to maneuver, but weighs a bit more at 30lbs.

How much do babies really cost?

~julybaby~

Between the initial furniture for the baby room, stuff you register for and what people really get you for the baby shower, and diapers and formula, etc...
In your experience, how much do you think you spent on baby the first year? Just looking for examples in your experience! We're ttc and am just curious. Thanks!

Answer
My son is almost six months and we have already spent so much!

Crib-$300
Breast Pump-$250
Travel System-$240
Pack n Play-$130
Convertible Car Seat-$100
Bottles-$30-40
Clothes- around $500
Formula-$120/month
Diapers-$60/month
Wipes-$15 for two months (Costco has a great deal and the wipes are like the Pampers wipes)
Baby Cereal-$4/month
High Chair-$50
Pacifiers-$20-30 these past 6 months
Infant tub-$15
Diaper Genie-$30
Diaper Bag-$50

These were all brand new things.

When you start solids you can make your own food easily, that will save you a LOT of money. You'll get things for your baby shower, too. Also, all that was not including his toys, like his swing, jumperoo, play gym, rocking chair, little toys and rattles, bibs... it's really not that bad, just make sure to start buying a few things when you're pregnant, that is my biggest regret. We waited until he was born, so it took out a huge chunk. Monthly, though, after you get the big things, it costs us about $200-$250 a month.
