Answer
They also said that the world would end in the year 1,000. The Seventh Day Adventist was based on the world ending in seven days though they revised that believe on day eight.

Take a look at what they are saying.

They say that it's the Mayans that predicted the end in their calendar. Well that date is the end of the long count upon which the calendar starts again, this happens every 5,126 years. The Mayans left records of this happening several times before. Basically it's the Mayan new year, there is no association with destruction and the people saying that the Mayans predicted destruction are not Mayans nor have they met any Mayans. Chances are whatever accounts they are intepreting disaster from are similar to our ousting of Father Time in favour of Baby New Year.

They say that the Earth, the Sun and the black hole at the center of the Galaxy will line up. True they will line up, just like it does every Dec. 21, it's the winter solstice, they'll line up for the summer solstice too and will form right angle triangles on the Spring and Fall equinoxes. The rest of the year, the three bodies will form various different triangles just any three points normally do. Also any two random points always makes a straight line, does that have any special significance?

They say that gravitational forces will change polarity as we cross the Galactic equator and that the sudden change in polarity will cause the crust of the Earth to slip thereby shifting the poles relative to the land masses.

The force that they are referring to is the gravitational draw towards the center of the galaxy just as the Moon is attracted to the Earth. We are in orbit around the Galaxy just as the Moon is in orbit around the Earth. This gravitational pull doesn't actually change but is always in a straight line between us and the center of the Galaxy. What they are saying is that if you express that force in terms of a component along the axis of the galaxy and a radial component along the plane of the galaxy then the component along the axis changes polarity as you go across the equator. Basically they're saying that when you're north of the equator, the equator is to your south and when you're south of the equator the equator is suddenly north of you. This is like when you express a vector in terms of x, and y values instead of magnitude and angle; as the angle changes while the magnitude stays the same, the x and y representations will change value. Nothing has actually changed. What they are saying is like saying that people in Australia are upside down and have to hang on to monkey bars to keep from falling of the Earth. The Earth's crust will not slip because there will be no sudden change in gravitational forces.

They say that there's a planet or a brown star that orbits the sun in such an eccentric orbit that it's too far and dark for us to see and that this planet/star will collide with us on Dec. 12, 2012. Well, in order for it to collide with us, it has to get close to us in which case it won't be too far away for us to see. Also, in order to be in orbit around the Sun, it has to be traveling less than the escape velocity of the solar system, our space probes were traveling faster than the escape velocity and still took decades before leaving the solar system and beyond our range to detect them. If there was a planet/star about to collide with us, it would have to be already plenty close by now and easily detected. Unless that planet/star has a hyperdrive engine, it's not going to make it to Earth in time for Dec. 12, 2012.

People say a lot of things, very little of it is true and most is based on partial representations of the facts.
