Baby due in September: travel system or convertible car seat?

miller0607

Help! I need advice on how baby car seats work. As I understand itâ¦..first there is a travel system - infant seat up to 22 pounds that attaches right to a stroller, comes with a base, and I could buy a second base for Jimâs car; later I would buy a convertible car seat, with another second base for Jimâs car. Then there is an infant car seat, which seems just like the former, but I would need to purchase a separate stroller. Third there is a convertible car seat system, which goes to over 50 pounds, and I would need a second base. It seems that I could actually get the convertible car seat to begin with because it starts at 5 pounds (is this true?) but the disadvantage would be having to lift Avery in and out of her seat into a separate stroller even as an infant, unlike the travel system. Which systems have other parents used? Advantages and disadvantages to the system you picked? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer
You have 2 choices when it comes to car seats for newborns. Infant seats or convertible seats. Infant seats can be used with stroller systems. They have bases, you can get one for each car and use them interchangeably. They go up to 22lbs. Convertible seats can be used rear facing from 5lbs until 35lbs (this may vary depending on the exact seat) and front facing until 50-65lbs (again, this varies based on model). They don't have bases, but are 1 unit. One would be needed for each car, unless you want to switch it back and forth. You won't be able to take baby out of the car while still in the seat so a sling or baby carrier would be a good idea for carrying baby at the grocery store or while out and about.

We chose to use an infant seat/travel system and then move baby to a convertible when he is too big for the infant seat. The disadvantage is that it is more expensive in the long run, but my kids fall asleep in the car all the time. I like that I can remove the seat and take it into the house w/o waking the baby.

3 in 1 car seat or Travel system and add on later ?

I am confused between getting a 3 in 1 car seat or buying a travel system with infant car seat plus stroller and buying the boosters later. Which is the better way to go ?

Answer
i had trouble with that one too because i want stuff that is going to grow with my child and perhaps save me some money in the mean time. if your looking to save money and time then i would go with a 3 in one because it grows with your child and you wouldn't have to buy more car seats. but if you are looking for convenience i would get a travel system. with a travel system you don't have to wake up your baby and listen to it cry for a Lil bit and put it in a stroller plus if you are in a quick run to the post office and you know its a no no to leave your baby in the car you just detach the travel system and go rather then waking your child up and dealing with the stroller.

sigh if only they made travel systems with 3 in one car seats.
