hey i am wanting to buy a Steelcraft Cruiser Travel System for my second child love everything about it all the reviews are really good but my question is can you get the stands so your other child can stand on it as you walk with ur pram?

Answer
Firstly you are not going to get as many answers as you could because most Aussie mums are using Yahoo! Australia with the filter for Aussie questions only turned on- you've asked on Yahoo! America.

Second- I like the cruiser stroller- the car seat on the other hand I do NOT like as it has a LOW weight limit and you may find your child has outgrown it by three months or so. I would recommend getting a car seat that has a rearfacing capacity of at LEAST 12 kg- the cruiser car seat only goes to 9kg.

If you want to get a stand for an older child to stand on, the Valco Hitch hiker attaches to the cruiser, although if your older child is on the taller side it makes it hard for the parent to push it. I personally prefer a Swiss Strolli Rider or a Buggy Pod, which fit MOST strollers and have the older child either beside the parent or beside the main part of the stroller.
I'll give links for the three devices in the sources section.
If you want a travel system with a good car seat, get the Hipod one (Available from Target) or a safety first one (from GOOD baby stores) ALL the steelcraft ones only go to 9kg, so I would NOT recommend ANY steel craft travel system, the strollers and prams are amongst the best avaliable in Australia but I wouldn't touch their car seats with a barge pole!

Infant Car Seat Safety Standards?

Q. I'm pregnant with my first child, and recently purchased a travel system for my unborn baby. I bought the Graco Infant Safeseat, because I had heard and read alot of good reviews about it online. But then today I saw on the news that the seat didnt pass all safety test for the government standards, along with many other name brand seats. Did anyone else see this? What is your opinion? I want my child to be the safest possible. Has anyone else used this infant seat?

Answer
Call your local police/fire departmant. Someone in your area should be able to help you locate the appropriate seat for your infant and help you intstall and use it safely.

Just FYI... the handle on the infant seat... it should always be DOWN when your seat is in the car and in use!!!! I know everyone else in the whole world has theirs up, but trust me... it should ALWAYS be down!

convertible car seat vs infant car seats?

baby travel systems vs convertible car seats on Britax Boulevard 70 Convertible Car Seat - Zebra - Baby Gear at Cribs
baby travel systems vs convertible car seats image

I was wondering if I could get some insight on purchasing a convertible car seat rather than an infant car seat for my baby. The convertible seat we are looking at can be rear facing and forward facing and sits from 5-65lbs. Or do you think we should just purchase the infant seat? Thank you in advance!

Answer
I bought a travel system with an infant seat. Itwas handy because I could move my baby in and out of the car without waking him. We moved him into the convertible seat (a Britax Boulevard, my son still loves that seat! He's 3 now) at about 9mths, rear facing, and he was a lot more comfortable in there than he was in the infant seat at that point. The infant seats have a lot of positive while your baby is young, but once they hit about 9-12months, you'll find your baby's head getting close to the top of the seat (the baby's head should be completely below the seat and within the side wings for maximum safety), and you might want to change. In the long run, it's cheaper just to buy a convertible now, but if money's not an issue and you want the convenience, then an infant seat is definitely a good investment.

Graco Travel System vs Snugride stroller frame?

Stephie

I am a First time mom and can't decide if I need a travel stroller system or if I just need the snap and go style system with infant car seat? Help!!!!!! Do I need both?

Answer
Don't get both!

You should get the snap n go style travel system until you decide what kind of stroller you want once your baby is a little bit older. You'll discover more what sort of lifestyle you will have with your baby, because, as you know, it will change in ways you cannot imagine. Then you'll have a better idea of what you want.

Do you exercise a lot? Then an all terrain or jogger stroller would be best for you, if you don't mind a bit of bulk.

Run errands and want something lightweight? Then an umbrella or lightweight stroller is best and there are LOTS of excellent choices.

Have a bigger budget and want something really nice? Oh my gosh, your options are huge. Start with the convertible strollers where you can have baby face you or face the world in a reversible seat.

I'm just saying that you have many more choices besides Graco, although this brand is very nice. I like their new Trekko all terrain stroller, and the new UrbanLite or FastFold are getting rave reviews.

What is this book about? Please tell me everything that happens in this book cause I read and I got lost so I need help!

Answer
My Son's Story is a complexly woven tale of struggle and disillusionment that begins with a painful discovery and travels through time to paint the portrait of a South African family fighting against the divisive power of apartheid. More specifically, it is the story of a lie that turns a young boy into a writer and the story of a man's evolution as a political activist. Will, the narrator, tells the story of his father, nicknamed "Sonny," once a "colored" schoolteacher and later a hero in the struggle against South African apartheid. The story is a retrospective account of Sonny's life. It follows roughly chronological order; however the spark for Will's story is an event that happened at age fifteen that changed his perspective on his father.

The opening sections describe this catalytic event. Playing hooky from school, Will goes to a movie theatre near Johannesburg and is shocked to see his father there with a white woman, Hannah Plowman. Plowman is a white woman who works for the International Organization for Human Rights; like Sonny, she is a fellow-militant against racism and State violence in South Africa. She provided emotional support to Sonny's family during his trial for anti-government activities. Later, she stayed in touch with him during his incarceration. At the doorway to the theatre, Will realizes, with confusion and bitterness, that he is seeing his father for the first time (but by no means for the last time) in the company of his mistress. Sadly, Sonny asks his son Will to cover for him, to lie about what he has seen. Will agrees and from then on his guilt about conspiring in a lie and anger at his father's deception combine to embitter Will and to color his retrospective account of his father's life.

Born the gifted son of an upholsterer, Sonny is victimized by the patently unequal educational system of South Africa. His mixed parentage lets him attend slightly better schools than his black counterparts, but the fact he is "colored" bars him from even using public libraries. Driven by his thirst for knowledge, Sonny buys what books he can and constantly peruses them. His library includes novels by Franz Kafka and the complete works of William Shakespeare. Because he intelligent and well read, Sonny gains a position as a schoolteacher in a respectable school.

Sonny's wife Aila is also colored -- of mixed African and Indian descent -- and is exquisitely beautiful. The attractive, intelligent couple earns the respect of their community through their hard work (he in teaching, she in charitable society work). They have two children -- Baby, Sonny's favorite, and Will, named after Shakespeare. Although he is not allowed to teach in the best schools or universities, Sonny is relatively content in his middle-class life and he believes that, gradually, education will create a more just South Africa.

When his children grow, the seeds of resistance are sown in Sonny's mind. Sonny wants to raise his two children to feel equal to whites and finds himself becoming more vocal in protest. As a schoolteacher, Sonny observes boycotts and eventually joins in a student protest march. He is fired in consequence, although he wins celebrity in the march.

Like a wild fire through the grasslands, news about Sonny spreads. "People in communities like his own, in other areas of Transvaal," Gordimer writes, "got to hear of him -- probably it was the newspaper photograph that started it" (p. 31). Eventually, because Sonny cannot get his teaching post backhe is hired by a shadowy underground political organization to make illegal speeches throughout South Africa (p. 32).

During one of his father's speaking tours, Will skips school and goes to the theater. This is where he sees Sonny and Hannah together. Will recognizes instantly that many of his father's absences are often trysting times for Plowman and Sonny.

Will is greatly insulted, both personally and for the sake of his family, but has to suffer in silence. Gradually, however, Will notices that those whom he has tried to shield from pain -- his mother and sister -- already know. Throughout the novel, Will is torn between love and hatred, admiration and disdain for his heroic father, until he wakes to the painful reality that his sister and mother have also been drawn into the vortex of political action. His sister, who had seemed oblivious to her father's activism, joins the military wing of his father's anti-apartheid organization, and his mother is forced into exile from the country when she, like Sonny, is arrested for subversive activities. Will is left in to write the story of his father and family down, to make this story into his own.

I'm moving back to south Africa at then end of the month ill be traveling with my 1 year old son and fiance.

Q. ITS HIS 1ST TIME ON A PLANE. CAN ANY1 GIVE ME TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP HIM OCCUPIED AS HE DOESNT LIKE 2 SIT WHEN HES AWAKE(HE JUST STARTED WALKIN).AND DOES ANYONE KNOW WERE I CAN GET A BATTERY OPERATED BOTTLE WARMER IN AUSTRALIA.

Answer
I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 8&5 and baby number 3 was born 23 December). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. In addition to that, we do another 8-10 international and domestic flights a year as a family. I have never had any problems with my children on any of the flights. Here are a few tips and suggestions:

1.) A car seat is not mandatory, but a CRS (Child Restraint System) is highly recommended for children under 40lbs to use on airplanes because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, restrains them properly, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit. A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft. A booster seat is NOT approved for use in an airplane. In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use. Almost all car seats pass this requirement.

There is also a new device that is approved by the FAA for airline use ONLY. It is called CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) and costs $75. It weighs 1 pound, is certified for all phases of flight (taxiing, take off, turbulence and landing), adjusts to fit ALL size airplane seats, and is approved for kids 22â44 lbs.
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device (car seat). You should call your airline to ask for a discount.

2.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your child, such as a few books, toys, a portable DVD player (be sure to bring extra batteries) or let him use your laptop (make sure it's fully charged) with a few movies, and one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal. I always bring a small pillow and blanket from home for my children (even now) because I know 100% that they are clean, and my children are accustomed to them.

My children like to bring along their own coloring books, a Doodle Pad, their Leap Pads (with a few booklets), and scrap paper that they can make their own drawings with and play games such as tic-tac-toe. My daughter used to like to bring along a doodle bear when she was younger so that she could draw on that as well, and my son likes to bring along some action figures to play with. I found that buying a Rose Art kit is great! It has crayons, markers, coloring books, coloring sheets, and stickers that they can color. It definitely keeps them entertained!

You can also play games like pat-a-cake, or I-spy, and tell stories to your children as well. If you tell a story, try to make it an interactive one where your son has a part in it so he stays interested.

You might also consider going to the store and letting your child (I let my children start this at the age of one) pick out his own carry on bag and a few inexpensive toys that will be used only once you are on the plane. Be sure to pick out a few toys without him seeing so that he has an extra surprise when he opens his carry on.

3.) Bring Snacks! just add water packets of food, cheerios, goldfish, animal crackers, dried fruit, etc. are great. New regulations also allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz (100ml), -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food, yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. with you also as long as they are in containers less than 3oz (100ml)
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

As long as your child is with you, you are able to take as much formula, breast milk, or regular milk that you will need for you child for the duration of the time you will spend in the airport and on the flight (as long as it is within reason). And no, you will NOT have to taste it - no matter what form you bring it in.

All that you must do is:

1. Separate the milk from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size (1 liter) zip-top bag.
2. Declare you have the items to one of the Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

4.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of wipes, ointments and other essential things. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use. One thing I always like to carry with me is hand sanitizer! I always wipe the trays down with that (followed by a baby wipe) and use it for my kids after taking them to the bathroom (even though they wash their hands). I know that airplane bathrooms are not the cleanest, so that is why I try to be vigilant.

Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your son. You will need this in case he gets sick, spills something on himself, or in case your luggage gets lost.

Bring any medications that you might need for your child should he get sick or that he takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz (100ml) rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Do NOT give your son medicine with the hopes of it making him sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well. I have also seen where it backfires; a parent gives their child a dose of Benedryl to make them sleep, but instead it gets the child more hyper and the parents get absolutely no rest on the flight (and neither does anyone else).

Try to change your sons diaper as close to boarding as possible. This will help to make your child feel fresh and more comfortable for take-off (which could also mean less problems).

5.) Not all children have a problem with the pressure changes in their ears. If yours does however you'll want to know how to help. For take-offs and landings (the WHOLE way up, and starting from the BEGINNING, or TOP of descent), the best ways to alleviate ear pressure are to:

*Give him something to drink (milk, water, juice - it doesn't matter)
*Give him a pacifier to suck on
*Tell him to yawn
*Pinch his nostrils shut, have him take a deep breath in through the mouth, then tell him to (gently) blow as if trying to blow his nose
*Place hot damp towels (usually like the ones distributed to first and business class before take-off and landing to freshen up with - just ask a flight attendant for them) or paper towels that have been soaked in hot water and wrung out, at the bottom of two paper or styrofoam cups, then hold the cups over the ears
*Gently but with some pressure, rub his neck repeatedly from the chin to the base of the neck. This will cause a swallowing motion that will relieve pressure build-up in the ears.

You can also try using a decongestant. It is always best to check with your doctor before using any type of medications though, to make sure you are using the one best suited to your childs needs. I personally have found pain relief medications don't really help, and at least in my experience, decongestants are a waste of money.

6.) Before you travel, I always suggest preparing son for what to expect so that he is not caught off guard and scared on the day of travel. You want to make sure that you tell him what is going to happen from the time you get to the airport until the time you arrive at your destination. You don't need to go into any great detail here, but give him something that he will be able to reference when actually traveling. If you are able to, I always suggest doing a dry run of the airport. This provides you with an opportunity to explain to him what is going to happen while he can see first hand what it looks like.

Here is a link that talks about what to expect when flying (also includes information about what to do at the airport) that may help you out a bit:

Travelling on a plane with a three year old?

I Need some serious advice!!! I will soon be traveling 8 hours on a plane for the first time with my three year old daughter. Please can anyone give some advice on how to make this smoother and simpler for me and my child. Also how can i help lessen the pain and pressure on a three year olds ears during take off and landing thanksss to hear from you all.

Answer
I've been flying internationally with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5), and here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me:

1.)Since you already have to buy a seat for your daughter, I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives you the opportunity to relax a bit.

A CRS is an airline-approved alternative to using a hard-backed seat and is approved for use on aircraft and for use in motor vehicles. Many people confuse it with a regular car seat, which it is not.

This website talks about approved CRS devices and their ratings: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. Parents should call their airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

Ask your airline if they can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you may not be permitted to bring your own CRS on board, and may need to check it as baggage.
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

2.) The best time of day to fly is whenever you are comfortable. If you can find a flight that will take off around your childs nap or bedtime, that would be easier, but of course we all know it doesn't always work out that way. The main thing is that you pick a day that you are comfortable with and try to be as relaxed as possible because your daughter will be able to pick up on any anxiousness or anxiety you might have.

3.) For take-offs and landings, the best thing you can do is give her a drink (milk, water, juice - it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

New regulations allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz, OR beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food onto the plane with you. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10

Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it.

Another trick is that if your daughter is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to drink, gently rub her neck from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

4.) Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your daughter. A few of her favorite toys, books, a portable DVD player and one or two movies if you have one, and any comfort things such as a blankie. The Fa's will also provide you with a toy or coloring book for your daughter also.

5.)Take your daughter to the store and buy her a small carry-on bag of her choice. Let her pick out a few new (but inexpensive) toys that will be used only once she is on the plane. Be sure to buy a few without her knowing so she will have a surprise when she opens up her bag.

6.) Pack a few instant hot/cold cereals, instant rice, and other just-add-water packets (age appropriate, of course). The stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water upon request. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food and a few other non-perishable snack items. Dried fruit make a wonderful snack (and they're healthy too!). Drinks will be provided free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request.

7.) Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your daughter. You will need this in case she gets sick, spills something on herself, or in case your luggage gets lost. Also bring any medications that you might need for her should she get sick. Do NOT give your daughter medicine with the hopes of it making her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

8.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

I hope you have a great trip, and if I can be of any more assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Any tips for traveling on air plane domestic flight with a 3 year old?

Bailey

I will traveling with my 3 year old to Little Rock, AK from Jacksonville, FL does anyone have any tips to make sure she does not get uncomfortable as far as her ears popping etc? Also do I need any special ID for her to get on the plane? I asked Delta via email and waiting for them to get back to me. I want to make this fun and comfortable for her.

Answer
I've been flying internationally with my children since they were 2 months (now 7&5), and here are some tips and advice that have always worked for me and I hope will help you:

1.) You will need to have all your babys documents in order. Generally do not need an ID for a child when traveling domestically, but it is always good to keep a notarized copy of her birth certificate with you. There is no other special ID you will need for her to get on the plane other than her ticket. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything.

2.) Since your daughter is at an age where you have to buy her a seat, I advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit.

Just remember the new regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use.

8.) Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up.

Also it is a good idea to have a check-up with your doctor before leaving to make sure your child is healthy enough to fly. If she has even a slight cold, the pressure in her ears during take-off and landing (even if you do the precaution methods) could leave his ears aching for days after the flight.

Most doctors recommend that if anyone is sick (such as being stuffed up or already having an earache), not to take the flight because of the potential damage to the ears. I know my husband and other pilots do not work if they are sick because of this danger.

9.) Bring any medications that you might need for your child should she get sick or that she takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag.

Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making her sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well.

10.) Last but not least, if help is offered to you, take it.

What's the best car seat or Stroller System for new borns?

Hi.

I'm having my baby girl in couple weeks, and i haven't bought the car seat, I'm looking a comfortable one for her, could you please help me making this decision by your own experience with the brand.

Thanks.

Answer
Congratulations!

There are two types of car seats that a newborn baby can ride in. One of those types is the infant car seat. This seat comes with a base; the base is installed in the car and the carrier can be clicked in and out of the base. Most infant car seats also come with a travel system, where the carrier can be clicked in the stroller. In other words, this makes the infant car seat transportable. A downside to an infant car seat it that it may not last as long as expected. An infant can outgrow this car seat really quickly (around 6 months for huge babies and 18 months for those petite ones). An infant car seat with a 35 lb rear facing weight limit may not last until a child is 35 lbs. It may last until they are 25 lbs and have outgrown it by height. They are also really heavy. Bring a 12 lb bag of something with you to the store. Place it in the carrier and practice carrying it around.

A car seat needs to protect an infant during a crash, so as a priority, it is important to find an infant car seat that can be correctly installed in your vehicle.

Some infant car seats I recommend based on its features that make it easy to install:
-Graco Snugride 30 (or the 35 model)
-Safety 1st Onboard 35
-Cosco Comfy Carry Elite (must be the "Elite" or "Elite Plus" model)
-Chicco KeyFit 30
-Britax B-Safe
-Britax Chaperone
-Cybex Aton

All of these infant car seats above allow the handle to be left "up" in the carrier postion. I would never recommend a car seat made by BabyTrend or Evenflo because these manufacturers require the handle to be moved after the infant carrier has been clicked in. It is just one more thing to remember and a pain.

An infant needs their car seat reclined at 45 degrees. This can take up a ton of front-to-back space in the vehicle. Britax infant car seats take up the most room. Then Graco takes a little less. Then Chicco takes less Graco. The Cybex Aton takes the least amount of front-to-back space, but it is expensive for how long it lasts.

The Comfy Carry Elite Plus as a lot of features and is really affordable (about $70). Here is a review of it: http://carseatblog.com/10346/dorel-safety-1st-comfy-carry-elite-plus-infant-carseat-review/

Another type of infant car seat is a convertible car seat. A convertible car seat stays installed in the car, which doesn't make it transportable. When a child is rear facing, the harness straps need to be adjusted at or slightly below the child's shoulders. This means that the lowest set of harness strap slots need to be low enough to fit a newborn's torso. Slots less than 7 to 8 inches will fit most full term newborns. Look at lower slots 5 to 6 inches to fit smaller babies. Some convertibles come with infant inserts that are placed either under or over the cover. These are used to lift a baby up so that the harness fits them better.

Parents who use a convertible car seat use an infant carrier such as a sling, wrap, or the ergo to carry their baby around. Like Bobbi said, having a stroller that folds flat is best. It is best for a baby to lie flat instead of in a reclined position.

Convertible car seats that will fit full-term newborns (some will fit even preemies):
-Chicco Next Fit
-Evenflo SureRide
-Graco My Ride 65 (or 70 model)
-Maxi Cosi Pria 70 (must be with the tinyfit system)
-Peg Perego Primo Viaggio
-First Years True Fit
-Evenflo Symphony 65 e3
-Evenflo Triumph 65

Besides the Graco My Ride 65, these convertible car seats could last a child from birth to age 5 to 6. The Graco My Ride 65 might last to age 4 to 5, depending on your child's height (too many variables to determine).

Besides these convertibles, the Cosco Scenera, Cosco Apt, Safety 1st Onside Air, Evenflo Tribute and Graco ComfortSport also fit newborns great; however, they will not be a child's last car seat with the harness as these will only last to a child to approximately age 2 to 3.

What do you do with the travel system for an infant when flying?

loki_only1

So... my 6month old and i are flying cross country. I know we need the car seat base when we get to cali, and i'd really like to have the stroller in the airport. i know they can put the carseat under the plane once we get to the gate... but do i have to pack the car seat base in my luggage?!

I have NO idea what i'm doing on this one. I know what to take for the baby, just dont know what to do about the car seat/base/stroller.

Answer
Actually, you probably don't even need your car seat base! I did the same thing when I first traveled and even went as far as to ship the base to my destination. then found out later I never needed my base! But most likely, your car seat can be placed in your car using a seat belt. There should be instructions for how to do this, either on your car seat or look online. I know Graco, Peg Perego and Maxi Cosi car seats can be used without their bases.
If your carseats fits into your stroller, you can bring them both thru security but they may have to do a special check on the equipment so leave yourself some time. if they are separate, there may be an issue, but I'd call the airport you are going to for more information on how to get through security.

ROCKST?R?

k pobably most of u, or many of u ppl out there get a cold sore when ur sick or something. It is terrible when it blisters out on ur lip. i was wondering how it gets into ur brain?? i heard there are 2 cases in a group of a million in the u.s had this problem so it sounds rare but how the heck can it travel to ur brain isn't it a just a blister virus on ur skin?

Answer
You sure made me work for this one, lol. I figured it had something to do with the fact that the Herpes virus "hides" in nerve cells- which can connect to the spine and brain - when it is not active. The paragraph below explains it better.

" Herpes Encephalitis
What is herpes encephalitis?

Herpes encephalitis is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of herpes virus infection. Encephalitis is an inflammation or infection of the brain and central nervous system (CNS).
How does it occur?

The herpes virus usually causes a skin infection, causing painful blisters. The blisters last for several days and the virus can be spread from the blisters to other people. The blisters may start as cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth, or they may start as sores in the genital area.

There are several ways the virus might infect the brain and nervous system.

* In between outbreaks on the skin, the herpes virus lives in nerve cells close to the spinal column. It's likely that the virus spreads from these areas into the fluid that cushions the brain and spinal cord.
* The herpes virus may enter the central nervous system through infections in the head and neck, including the ears. Many people have herpes infections inside their noses or inside their ears. These areas are separated from the central nervous system by very thin bones and membranes, which the virus can pass through.
* The virus may spread to a newborn during delivery if the mother has herpes sores in the genital area. When this happens, the baby may have a total body herpes infection, including the central nervous system.

which of the trimesters is the most important to the healthy prenatal development of the baby?

Jess

The First Trimester

During the first trimester, the egg is fertilized, cell division begins and it travels to the uterus.

A zygote, starts as a single cell. It begins to divide and eventually creates a hollow ball of cells. This ball of cells must move from the fallopian tube, where fertilization takes place, to the uterus. Tiny hairs on the inside of the fallopian tube move the zygote to the uterus where it attaches itself to the uterine wall. If the zygote attaches itself to the inside of the fallopian tube it is called an ectopic pregnancy. If this happens the pregnancy must be terminated and the zygote will have to be removed to ensure that it does not rupture the fallopian tube.

By the seventh day, the zygote attaches itself to the wall of the uterus. Once the zygote has attached itself to the uterine wall it is called an embryo. The embryo is microscopic in size and is too small to be seen by the human eye.

One Month

Embryo: An enormous amount of development occurs in the first month. At the end of the first month of development, the embryo has grown to be about 0.6 cm in size. By this time, the heart has started to beat and the nervous and digestive systems have formed. The eyes and ears of the baby are becoming visible.

Mother: For the mother, during the first month she will miss her period, but typically other signs of pregnancy are not yet noticeable.

Two Months

Embryo: The second month of development also sees a lot of advancements. The embryo has increased in size to about 2.5 cm long. The head is visibly larger than the rest of the body as the brain has begun to develop. Specific facial features can also be seen by this point. The fingers and toes also begin to appear during this stage.

At the end of month two, the embryo is now referred to as a .

Mother: For the mother, her breasts may begin to enlarge and she may find that she has to urinate more often, due to the increased size of the uterus pushing on the bladder. She may also begin to experience âmorning sicknessâ or vomiting in the morning hours. Expectant mothers also find that they start to become more tired during the second month.

Three Months

Fetus: At three months the fetus has grown to 7.5 cm in length. (This measurement is taken from crown to rump, meaning from the top of the head to the buttocks). The facial features are becoming much clearer at three months. Also, at three months the first signs of the sex of the fetus are evident.

Mother: For the mother, it starts to be noticeable that she is pregnant at this time, because her stomach becomes slightly larger.

After studying the three trimesters of a pregnancy, decide which of the trimesters you think is the most important to the healthy prenatal development of the baby and why that trimester is so critical. Explain and justify your decision in a clearly-worded document.

heres what I came up with can someone tell me if this sounds right

I think, the first trimester is the most important part of the development for the baby. The first trimester is the most critical time in the pregnancy. Due to the first three months all of its major organs are starting to functions like nervous and digestive system, the heart has started to beat. The brain is developing along with facial features eyes and ears. Fingers and toes are starting to appear as well.

Can anyone recommend a cheap twin buggy suitable for newborn twins?

Sarah

I am pregnant with twins and I have been searching the internet for prams for newborn twins they are all sooo expensive does anyone know of a cheap side by side carrycot twin pram or one with 2 carrycots? As this is doing my head in :) thanks in advance ...Sarah

Answer
First wheels city twin do a good twin pushchair, it can be used with carry cots and maxi cosi car seats to make it a travel system. Brand new it will cost £429.99 but that is only for the pram from kiddies kingdom it will cost £134.95 to purchase the carrycots. The seat units can face both ways which is great for when the babies have grown out their carrycots it means they can still face you.

http://www.kiddies-kingdom.com/ProductsDetails.aspx?item_id=488#

If you want a bargain then have a look on ebay, you will find the exact same pushchair but with all the accesories for a good price

P.S. My best friend has this pram for her twins and loves it.

trying to find a travel system for first baby-- can't figure out what to get. Graco, evenflo, safety first? any help is appreciated. needing one that can recline and is easy to get into a compact car. ANY IDEAS?

Answer
I'm pretty happy with my Graco travel system, but this particular stroller is a bit bulky when folded.
Go online to Target, Wal-mart, etc or another place you can buy travel systems and read the reviews! It helped really me when I was trying to find one.

Here's the one I got: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Graco-FlipIt-Travel-System-Emery/13060515
It says it's not sold in stores but the Wal-mart in my area had it on clearance for $80! Ridiculous! There's nothing wrong with the travel system though..they were just clearing out and rearranging the store.

Recent mommies: what are the best baby slings, all in one strollers, and baby bath tubs/showers?

Adje J

I'm going to be a new mommy in March. My hubby and I are trying to finish up our registry, but can't seem to decide on a few last items. Any recent mommies out there have some recommendations on these items: baby slings (comfortable, easy to use preferably), a stroller that also has the baby carrier and car seat holder, and the easiest to use baby bath tub/shower center?

Thanks for the input!! :)

Answer
Slings- I can't recommend one brand because every mom is different and every baby is different.

I would NOT recommend a travel system. Most babies outgrow the carseat very quickly, and if they don't outgrow it, they are too heavy to lug around. Plus, with a baby being born in March, it'll be awfully warm to have your baby in the car seat in the stroller during the summer. I'd get a Graco infant seat and then get a really good stroller. Peg Perego infant seats are good, as are Chicco and Britax. I'd steer clear of Evenflo, Safety 1st, and Cosco (including Eddie Bauer) because they're junk. Some strollers come with infant seat attachments, but I do not recommend a Graco stroller. They're bulky and become squeaky pretty quickly. I am in love with my Maclaren stroller. They're pricey but last FOREVER (we're talking used daily with multiple kids) and still looks new after several years. The Maclaren link I gave you comes with an infant seat attachment if you really want a travel system feel to your stroller. You also can't go wrong with a Peg Perego. I'd try to find something small and compact so it doesn't take up a ton of room at home or in the car. Here are some strollers that I have used and like and they have good reviews, too!

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3446845
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3458517

As for a baby tub--just get your basic plastic tub. You don't want one with a mesh liner because it is just a breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

EDIT: The Bugaboo stroller is fantastic--it's my favorite, but it's SO expensive. If you have a higher budget, the Uppa Baby is a close second, but still double the cost of the Maclaren.

If you get a carseat with a 30 lb weight limit, it won't fit in the seat part of the shopping cart and you'll have to use the entire basket which kind of defeats the purpose.

Also, don't get a head support insert or anything that doesn't come with the seat--just roll up a receiving blanket and place around baby once baby's in the car seat. It's never safe to put anything between baby and the seat itself because it can interfere with the seat in a crash.

Answer
Foods or substances to avoid during pregnancy
Caffeine: During pregnancy, caffeine can cross into the babyâs blood, possibly resulting in spontaneous abortion or low birth weight. When breastfeeding, caffeine will be present in breast milk if drank in higher quantities. It is best to keep caffeine to less than 300mg per day. Switch to decaffeinated beverages and limit chocolate intake (1 dark chocolate bar = 50mg caffeine).

Herbal teas: Citrus peel, ginger, lemon balm, orange peel and rosehip herbal teas are generally safe, but mothers should have no more than 2-3 cups a day. Chamomile and other herbal teas can have harmful effects on you and your baby and should not be consumed.

Alcohol: Alcohol consumed during pregnancy can be harmful and result in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Avoid alcohol if you are planning to become pregnant and if you are pregnant.

Artificial sweeteners: There is some controversy over the safety of consuming artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame (Nutrasweet and Equal), and acesulfame-potassium. These sweeteners are used widely in soft drinks, low calorie desserts, yogurt, chewing gum, sports bars and candy. During pregnancy, itâs best to avoid these products all together. Read food labels to see if artificial sweeteners have been added. Avoid using saccharin or cyclamates. Sucralose (splenda) is a non-calorie sweetener that is derived from a sugar molecule and is therefore thought to be safe.

Fish and seafood: Certain fish contain high levels of mercury, which can affect a babyâs developing nervous system. Fish of most concern are those fatty fish with a long lifespan such as swordfish, marlin, king mackerel, shark and tuna. Limit these fish to once per month. Avoid raw fish or undercooked shellfish such as oysters, mussels, prawns (shrimp) and crab, which can cause severe food poisoning, viral and bacterial infections if contaminated. Some fish also contain high levels of an industrial pollutant called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their fatty tissues such as bluefish, striped bass, salmon, pike, trout and walleye and should be avoided. Eating large amounts of PCBs during pregnancy is linked to negative effects in babies such as decreased attention, memory, and IQ. For more information, see The Pros and Cons of Eating Fish

Other food related risks:

Listeriosis is a food borne illness caused by the bacterium listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis can cause miscarriage during the first trimester and acute illness or stillbirth later in pregnancy. To reduce the risk, pregnant women should avoid unpasteurized or raw milk products such as some soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, Camembert and blue cheese. Other potential food sources are meat pates, liver products and pates, processed meats, raw meats and poultry, as well as unwashed fruits and vegetables. Be sure to wash produce well, cook foods thoroughly and heat processed meats and ready to eat foods such as hot dogs and deli meats.

Food safety principles should be followed by everyone at all times but is especially important during pregnancy.

E coli is another food borne illness that can have harmful effects during pregnancy. Escherichia coli is a bacteria, that when ingested can produce deadly toxins that can cause severe damage to the intestinal tract and kidneys. In pregnant women, the infection can travel to the fetus and cause infections that are resistant to antibiotics. Pregnant women should implement food safety practices such as proper cleaning of hands, utensils and foods. E coli can be found in undercooked beef products, unpasteurized milk, contaminated water and mayonnaise and vegetables grown in cow manure. When in doubt about a specific food, it is best not to eat it.

Salmonella is a food borne illness commonly found in raw or undercooked eggs. During pregnancy, itâs best to avoid eating anything with a runny yolk such as poached, sunnyside up or over-easy eggs, as these donât reach high enough temperatures to kill off harmful salmonella bacteria. Instead, use pasteurized egg substitutes. Avoid some Caesar salad dressings, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custards, and Hollandaise sauces, as they may be made with raw eggs. Unpasteurized eggnog should also be avoided.

Smoking: Smoking during pregnancy can cause a baby to be born premature and at a low birth weight.

What is the best car seat to buy?

baby travel systems consumer reports on Dorel Juvenile Group to Recall 450,000 Infant Car Seat/Carriers Due To ...
baby travel systems consumer reports image

Kayla Tuck

I am expecting my first baby in November and I have no idea on what car seat to buy. All of the different brands, styles and safety features are mind boggling. What is the safest and most comfortable car seat to buy that doesn't cost a fortune? Is it better to buy the travel system or just wait to get a stroller until she can sit up by herself? Is a convertible car seat as comfortable for a newborn as an infant car seat is? What car seat did you or do you have?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Answer
According to consumer reports, the best car seat for crashes is the Britax Chaperone. I bought that for my son because of that reason. He loves it, he always sleeps in it and even at 10 1/2 months in the 77th percentile for weight and the 87th percentile for height he is comfortable and still fits in it. It also says in the consumer reports that it is safer to buy an infant seat when your child is small, plus they are so convenient. I didn't buy the matching stroller because it was too much, I bought a Jeep Liberty Sport for my son (the car seat fits in it) and we both love it! You will also want to look into a "bundle me" to put on the car seat to keep your little one warm. My husband and I agree, besides the necessities, that was the best gift we received! I love the britax chaperone so much, we bought him a britax convertible seat for when he grows out of his infant seat.

Is there any travel system that comes included with the car seat and a double stroller?

Kathy

I am looking for a double stroller that comes with the infant car seats included. If you know of any please let me know. You can email me.
maria_mejia_4@yahoo.com
Thank you I really appreciate it.

Answer
I don't know of any double stroller that comes with a carseat. If there is one it's probably made by Graco.

Of course, there are many double strollers that accept infant carriers. My favorite is the Chicco Cortina Together double stroller ($300). It is light-weight for a double, folds up almost as small as the single Cortina, and uses the Chicco Keyfit, which is currently Consumer Reports #1 ranked infant carrier.

A less expensive option would be the Baby Trend Sit n' Stand stroller ($129-189). The $189 version has two complete seats, as the older child is ready, the back seat turns into a bench type seat. The child can sit and face you, or stand on a small platfrom and face forward. The less expensive models have a full front seat and the bench style seat in the back. These can accept a Baby Trend, as well as many other brands. I'm not a big fan of Baby Trend Infant carriers because of complaints I have heard from our guests, so I would probably use a Graco Snugride with this stroller.

Graco makes a few double strollers, the lightest and least expensive one is the Graco DuoGlider LX Stroller - Pippin ($149). Only Graco infant carriers will work with this system. The Graco snugride is my second favorite carrier behind the Chicco.

If you want to go a little higher end look at the Phil and Teds ($480 - 700) you can buy adapters for the Graco Snugride, the Peg Primo Viaggio, and the Chicco keyfit for $35.

The best feedback I get for the higher end double strollers is for the Bob ($485-500). I have never had someone who owned this stroller have a complaint about it. You can buy car seat adapters for $89.

Hope this helps, please feel free to contact me with any questions,

Alan

Want to try Ivory soap for my pimples, does it really work?

best baby travel systems 2012 on Out and About With Your Baby Pink Newborn Services
best baby travel systems 2012 image

Cristina F

I want to try something more simple and effective. Several members of my family use Ivory soap for face acne. I am Hispanic and get pimples on my chin area around the laugh lines. The rest of my face rarely gets any pimples at all. I have extremely uneven skin tone and have an oily t zone. I get bumpy break out in my chin area. I heard Ivory soap is good for face acne. My skin gets very flaky and dry when I try new products but usually a good moisturizer helps.

If Ivory soap helps can someone tell me how to use and witH what moisturizer I should use it with? Someone in my family does Ivory soap on the face followed with Aveeno baby moisturizer.

Answer
Any kind of facial wash, you're leaving something toxic behind, it's not a matter of convenience, it's a billion dollar business that can do more harm than good to your acne. And sometimes we feel entirely virtuous about our skin-care regimen because it's full of SPF-- all year round!-- and cleansers and such. But the truth is, we may not realize that we're overdoing (or underdoing) something that can lead to the very thing we're trying to avoid: dryness, breakouts, accelerated aging, New York dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf. (I've been giving this same advice for decades, but she's proof enough!).
Take a shower everyday, use washcloth to exfoliate and bath & body wash. Hydrogen peroxide does wonders for acne. Visit their website for more tips & other uses. ONLY $1.

Acne medication could worsen what ever allergies you have, so instead of trying out one product after another, you're actually spreading it around.
The less products you use, the better for your skin. Use a bath & body wash like Suave, Irish Spring, Ivory, Dove Body & Face wash in the shower, use a washcloth. Treat your face like the rest of your body, take a shower everyday or wash your face everyday.

The secret is keeping your face clean and oil-free. I also don't use liquid on my face for anything, and very little moisturizer, not even a dime size. Since my face is not dry. Good skin also comes from your good genes. Increase your fresh fruits & vegetables 3-5 servings per day. And programmed your mind to do this day after day, for the rest of your life.

The beauty industry is a billion dollar business, they know acne is everyone's problem, but instead of saying soap is drying for you, they have to invent an acne product that can worsen the skin as MANY TEENAGERS have experienced during hormonal change, but as you get older those are completely a waste of time & money!

Sometimes just the oil on your face from make up and lotions, even from your hair can travel to your face causing acne to come out. Others, from stress, hormones & diet or foods.

Google: FIVE FOODS TO EAT FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN
All the vitamins & minerals you need for good skin care comes from all the healthy foods you eat from Mother Nature.

If acne's a problem, your pillowcases may be part of the cause. "They collect skin oil, dead skin cells, bacteria, and excess night creams," says David Bank, a professional Dermatology @ Columbia University/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. "But if nothing changed by 6 week the product will never work for you. Time to move on."

"If you have breakouts, dairy is the devil' it is inflammatory and will add hormones to your already hormone-rife system. Get calcium elsewhere, or try nonfat organic dairy products. For PMS breakouts, avoid dairy and bakery items the week before your period - sugar and flour are both causes for pimples and collagen." Dr. Jessica Wu, M.D. University of Southern California School of Medicine and author of the new book Feed Your Face.

SOMEONE WROTE TO ME the other day, ASKING IF THIS BRAND IS BETTER THAN THAT BRAND - FOUND @ DRUGSTORES THEN WROTE ME BACK & THANK ME, SHE LOOKED @ HER MOM'S SKIN AND THEY WERE GOOD, BUT SHE USES ONLY WATER TO WASH HER FACE. There you go, an update.

Lea Michele recently revealed her secret to clear skinâShe gives it room to "breathe." "Maybe I'll put on a little mascara. But other than that I try very hard to just let my skin breathe," she told people.com. "I care more about letting my skin breathe than how I look."
Another good example is Lily Collins, actor, writer, artist: "When I travel to Europe, I go days without putting anything on. It feels healthier. I just never understood the idea of caking it on. The more you have on your face, the more there is to smudge and go wrong." Glamour - Sept. 2012.

What are some new rides and attractions coming to Disneyland?

Amy Meadow

What are some of the attractions and rides that they're building right now in Disneyland, California and Californian Adventure Park? For example, the new Cars ride, Goofy's Fly School and the 'Ariel's Grotto' thing (I don't remember what it's really called). As a bonus, can anyone explain to me what 'Ariel's Grotto' is going to actually be? Is it a restaurant? Thanks!

Answer
Right now here is what is going on in both parks -

Disneyland:
* STAR TOURS is being remodeled into Star Tours 2: The Adventure Continues. It will be a simulator ride like the old version of the attraction but will now be 3D. It will also have different experiences so that the ride will rarely ever be the same and will give more options of where you can travel to in the Star Wars world. "The Simulators are going to be the same, but you'll notice differences inside the cabin". Structure is being refurbished, they're adding queue rails, adding fastpass machines, and making changes inside the building, though you can't see anything anymore because they recently added a tarp covering the Whole Building. The Star Trader is closed for refurbishment as well. The ride is set to take place in between the 2 sets of movies (the first 3 before Darth Vader and the last 3 with Darth Vader). This is set to open JUNE 3RD 2011!
Here are some video links for the new Star Tours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I01pT84HeY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jQaHgsKhQ4

There are no other NEW attractions being built in Disneyland, but they are doing a pretty extensive refurbishment on Splash Mountain. They are probably just doing maintanence but there is also a rumor that they are putting in lap bars.

California Adventure:
* Right now they are working on re-doing the entire ENTRANCE to California Adventure. The entrance will be re-made to resemble a 1920s type California, the one that Walt Disney would have known and loved. This will resemble (not in style but in layout) Main Street USA. Red Car Street Cars (like LA's old Pacific Electric Railway will be added and the focal point with be a building created to resemble the Carthay Circle Theatre (which hosted the world premire of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves).
Here are some pictures of what it will look like:

* LITTLE MERMAID: ARIEL'S UNDERSEA ADVENTURE is set to open up on JUNE 3RD 2011. This ride is going to be much like the other dark rides (Snow White's Scary Adventures, Peter Pan's Flight, etc. that are currently in Fantasyland) taking you through the movie and highlighting some memorable scenes. Disney has been pretty good about keeping most of the ride a secret, however they have released a few videos and what-not.
Here are some videos to check out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUIZXxj3st4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhgdWYUbBFo (Has some Cars Land info to!)

** ARIELS GROTTO is a restraunt and already can be found in Paradise Pier**

*CARS LAND is going to be an entirely new land in California Adventure! It will be somewhat like Bugs Land (which surrounds you in the world of the bugs from A Bug's Life) but will put you into the world of the Cars from "Cars". This land will have an attraction known as Radiator Springs Racers which will be the same ride system as Test Track in Epcot. There will also be a ride called "Luigis Flying Tires" which will be like the "Flying Saucers" that were in the original Tomorrowland (although the technology has come a long way to make this ride more efficent). The 3rd ride here will be Mater's Junkyard Jamboree. Where you are being pulled around by Baby Tractors and basically being spun around and swung back and forth. Cars Land is set to OPEN IN 2012!

Do you think a light pink baby travel system will get too dirty?

;-)

I have seen a travel system that I want if I have a girl. It's a graco and it's light pink. Would it get dirty fast because it is light pink? Or should I buy another color?
I don't plan on having anymore children.

Answer
I bought a dark blue Graco stroller when I was pregnant with my first. We got a lot of use out of it! Then when baby #2 showed up we bought a dark blue tandem stroller which I hated! That thing didn't turn well. Anyway we used the first stroller with the second baby too. And it seems no matter how clean you try to keep it, if you're using it A LOT like we did it always gets a bit dirty. I'd have to think that on pink it would really show more. I'm guilty of looking at a pink one myself now~~my kids are 8 & 6 so I long ago sold all my baby stuff and now I'm pregnant again!!

Even though I like this pink one I don't dare buy it. I have no idea what I'm having yet, plus I plan to be pregnant at least one more time after this and if that's a boy, I don't think he'll appreciate the pink stroller!

How do i get rid of mold speckles on fabric?

Q. I have a baby travel system and it looks like this

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...

It was left out on the front porch and has mold speckles on it. Tiny little dots. Not all over it though. Just in spots. I need to know how to get the mold off. I have taken it all apart. Struggeling fianancially right now so i need to sell it. But want to get the most out of it. HELP!!!!!!

Answer
you need to kill the mold first. If you get it wet the mold will spread. Sunlight is the best way to kill mold. Just leave it in the sun all day, then clean it. Don't try to hide the mold, you do not want to give the decease mold cause to a little baby.

What is the tone of this poem?

roon

I believe the tone is gloomy and straightforward. Gloomy because of the description she gives and straightforward because she's saying things as they are. Can anyone help me out though? Why would it be gloomy?

Saturday morning armies
of Black women
young
and old
and, young and old in the same time
in the same face
in the same care and time and work-worn hands
you rise with the dawn
leaving home and brown babies
behind you, in the day's early light
pulling coat and scarf close
avoiding the mirror
shrinking of the cold morning of
bus ride
to prestigious street corner

you are not alone
you are with your sisters in this
Northend - to Southend
Jane Finch - to Rosedale
Montreal - to Outermont
Harlem - to Scarsdale
wearing head-rag
carrying dust-mop, scrub-bucket
in-service three days of week march in the dawn.

you possess a key, cherished girl (never woman)
of this house
you tap and scuffle and wipe feet at the back
and enter the world of
day's
day's
day's work in service
taking your place in that army of
round and strong and weary backs
moving with grace and sure familiar stride
from your kitchen
your babies
your own forgotten morning at home
to this
three days-a-week armies of Black women
in service

Answer
I feel it is more realistic of life than truly gloomy. Capitalism and for that matter any system in any age creates a hierarchy and some are at the top of the pile while the majority are at the bottom or in stages between. This poem deals with people (women) being exploited by the system but they appear to be black. For centuries those with white skins have dominated those with yellow, brown or black skins. Why is this? I feel that when the mass immigrations of around 30,000 years ago out of Africa those who travelled to Europe had their skins changed to a paler shade due to the lack of sunshine. The 'whites' found they were in latitudes that helped them develop advanced feudalism that led to industrialised capitalism, which exploits everyone whether they are black or white. If you are working class and black you will feel very exploited and this will give rise to this type of poem. Gloomy not, realistic yes.

Tips on traveling with a 1 month old?

Isabel

My husband and I are expecting a child in September of this year. We had already made plans to visit a friend in Montreal in September, but we decided to push it back due to the baby coming. We are planning on visiting friends for a few days, then coming home. Assuming our babe is healthy and there are no other reasons we shouldn't travel, we hope to go up there around the time the baby will be 1-1.5 months old. We live in VA and will be traveling by car.

We have taken the trip a few times without an infant (but with a 2-4 year old) and I was looking for any advice on traveling with a one-month old. I know she will still be sleeping a lot, and I know that between feedings and changings and stretchings we will have to make numerous extra stops, so we are planning to add a few hours at least to the trip. Our son will be staying with relatives for this one, so we won't have him with us.

Please, no condemnation of the decision to travel; we are quite adventurous when it comes to our kids and I want to take advantage of the fact that I won't be working; I'm not one of those moms who barricades herself in the house until the babe is older. Our friends can't wait to have us and the baby stay with them, so there shouldn't be any issues there. My only fears so far are about exposing her still new immune system to a totally different environment, any advice on extra protection on that front?

I read that below 3 months of age, you only need the baby's birth certificate to cross the border, is that true? We are taking a station wagon, and we were wondering what to take, how often to stop, and for tips on how to keep her entertained. Also, anyone who has stayed a few days outside home with a one month old, feel free to tell me about your experiences. I've heard it can actually be easier since the babe is still imobile and completely attached to you (I plan to put my Maya Wrap to good use).

Thanks, All!

Answer
I traveled from Philadelphia to Atlanta by car with my son when he was just two months old. I don't know the required documents, but I think you will need a passport or passport card. I do also know that traveling with a newborn is as easy as you make it. You really don't have to worry about entertaining a baby that young, but just be ready to stop and feed the baby on demand or better yet take turns sitting in the the backseat with the baby, so that you can feed him/her on demand. Also, stop every three hours or so for diaper changing. Be sure to also add on travel time for these stops. Good Luck, and this link should help you.

how important is it to have a LIGHTWEGIHT UMBRELLA STROLLER?

singlechic

when u already have a regular one like the big clunky one from a travel system? just curios i have limited funds and a few baby items left to buy before she gets here. is that a must=have item?

Answer
no, i have to say they are a waste! i use mine to take packages into the post office, other than that it sits in the back of the van or in the garage. it is difficult to steer and my kids put their feet down on the ground which makes it tough to use, plus for a baby it does not recline. stick with the bigger stroller!

and FYI they are only 12 bux at target, walmart and toys r us.

What Is the BEST car seat brand?

baby travel systems consumer reports on Top Consumer Complaints | Appliance Problems - Consumer Reports
baby travel systems consumer reports image

Juliette

I need to know which car seat brand is the BEST, because I don't want my baby falling out of the car seat, (if you know what I mean). If your asking I'm 21 years old, she's due on August 23rd, and I'm really working on that baby bump!

Answer
The safest car seat is one that fits your vehicle, your child, and is used correctly each and every time.

The most expensive car seat, doesn't mean your child is the safest. I have seen parents buy an expensive $300 Britax Convertible and they use it front facing for a child that should be rear facing. That child would be much safer in a cheap rear facing Cosco seat. In fact, all car seats pass the same standards. Every car seat company likes to advertise themselves to be the safest. Also, consumer reports is very biased. They often test seats in ways the manufacturer didn't intend.

Furthermore, you aren't forced to use an infant car seat for an infant. Infant car seat carriers with the base is only for convenience. I find them too much trouble than their worth- the carrier itself weighs about 20 lbs and with your baby in it, it will easily weigh up to 25 lbs. Also, your baby won't stay light for long, and it will get up to 30 and 35 lbs with your baby in it! I know that you won't use a carrier after the baby is 5 months old. You will leave it in the car and buckle your child in it. Nevertheless, children shouldn't be left in a reclined position longer than necessary. Infants shouldn't be left to sleep in their car seats. Travel systems are bad for your baby's health- the child is left in the reclined positioned and as a plus, isn't held! :(

Infants can use convertible car seats. Convertibles are used rear facing by installing it with the rear facing belt path, then are turned front facing and installed with the forward facing belt path.

But to answer your question, the safest car seat for your baby and older toddler or even preschooler is being restrained properly in a rear facing car seat. If you can find a rear facing car seat with a high weight limit and a tall shell for your toddler, then keep her rear facing! Many kids can be rear faced up until age 3 with our American car seats, but some small kids can rear face up to age 4. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping a child rear facing up until at LEAST age 2. In Sweden and in other scandanavian countries, children are kept rear facing until at least age 4 or 5 years old and that is the norm. Of course, their car seats have such high weight limits of 55 lbs! Their car seats are outgrown a little different too. In some states, it may be illegal to use a foreign car seat, but I would trust any swedish car seat with my child's life- their standards are much more strict than our standards. Their car seat standards check for the forces on a child's neck. This is called the plus test. It is so strict, that manufacturers won't even test a forward facing car seat- they know that forward facing car seats will NEVER pass the test as the forces on a forward facing child's head and neck are far too great. Forward facing car seats with the harness are not even sold in Sweden! Parents won't buy them for their 1 year old, 2 year old, or 3 year old. You could buy a Swedish car seat at www.car-seat.se, but 1st buy a US car seat to keep your little one rear facing until 20 lbs. Swedish rear facing car seats are huge and are meant for children over 20 lbs. Just make sure you watch the installation video.

If you want long rear facing time, but are looking for a US seat, I would check the fit of the Diono Radians in your vehicle. You can go to toys r us to check out the fit, or you can

Has anyone tried both the Maxi Cosi and the Chicco Keyfit carseat/travel system? suggest?

Determined

Which would you suggest?

Answer
Across almost all review sites, including Consumer Reports, people say the Chicco Keyfit is the best infant car seat.

Here is one baby review site that has some good reviews of the Keyfit: http://www.viewpoints.com/Chicco-KeyFit-reviews

Do your parents have a pushchair at their house for when the kids visit?

quality baby travel systems image

This is just something I'm wondering about...

I don't drive, so I plan to get a good quality pram/pushchair for my baby, and just a car seat for when we go in a taxi or whatever. I don't need it to fold down tiny to fit in the boot or store in the house, because it will be in use every single day.

However, my mother DOES drive and will be wanting to spend weekends and days off with the baby, so should she get herself a lightweight, easy fold small travel system to save dragging my pushchair across town?

I think it would also make it easier for when we all go out together, as her car boot is TEENY.

What do you think? What set up do your family have?

Answer
my parents have 26 grand children, and while none of us live very near them, with so many of us, they have grandchildren visiting several times a year. Over the years various of my siblings have bought them a stroller, a highchair, a playpen, and a car seat, just so they could have one while they were visiting, and now we all get to take advantage of that when we go visit. My parents didn't buy any of those though. It is handy having a stroller there. My in-laws don't have any baby items so it does make it a little difficult when we go visit them.

Is there a Car Seat from Graco thats similar to Chicco Cortina 30 Travel System?

MommyTo

A travel system from Graco that is similar to the Chicco Cortina 30 Travel System, but lighter weight?

Answer
No need for a travel system :) Pick a good quality stroller that you like, make sure it reclines flat for use until baby can sit upright. Buy the car seat separately and don't use it with the stroller- it's not good for baby to be in a car seat any longer than they need to.

Van is due

I bought the Eddie Bauer travel system, but I have read that is sucks. (My baby isn't born yet) I want a system that has the car seat, base, and stroller in one. I am looking at Chicco. Does anyone have this kind? Please tell me what you have, how much it costs, and what you think about it, and if you think it is good. I want something that is safe and easy to use.

Thanks!

Answer
You know what? You do not need a stroller just yet.

Newborns do not, I think, belong in strollers. It always makes me a bit sad to see a tiny baby, who'd much rather be in somebody's arms, tucked inside a car seat, inside a massive stroller...

My daughter is almost three months old, and we don't have any interest in using one, yet. Her father carries her in his arms, or I carry her.

We have a Baby Bjorn front-pack carrier, a mei tai carrier, a sling, and a "Bill Amberg Papoose" carrier.

Blow the money on a carrier for now. Your baby will be so much happier!

Does chicco make a good line of products?

I mean like play yard, highchair and travel system wise? We have thought about getting all matching ones but are debating between that and the fisher price rain forest theme?

Answer
Yes, I have the Chicco highchair and travel system and LOVE them! However, the Chicco infant carrier does not fit into any other stroller besides it's own. I am currently looking for a double stroller for my 1 year old daughter and my upcoming baby (due in Jan.) and it looks like I am going to have to buy a whole new infant carrier and stroller because Chicco doesn't make a double stroller that an infant carrier can go in.
